As a videogame producer, John Day has created popular games such as “Meet the Robinsons”, “Car 2” and “Toy Story 3”.

When he was young, Day spent lots of time playing videogames, but getting game ideas from his imagination to the screen required plenty of technical know-how, too. Luckily for Day, his father worked in the computer industry and shared his knowledge. However, Day says, “Each time he caught me playing games as a kid, his trademark phrase was, ‘You’re never going to amount to anything, wasting all that time on these videogames.’”

“I built my first PC when I was 11,” Day says, “and I never really stopped.”

While studying business management in college, Day also worked as a game tester. Both his education and job experience help him now as he comes up with new ideas, meets deadlines and solves problems.

A videogame produc er is in charge of a game’s development from beginning to end. Day says, “All producers have to be designers, at least a little bit.” Another part of Day’s job is getting things done on time and within budget. “We have to create a product before a certain date, and it takes work to get there.” Sometimes that can be a challenge. Problems come up often when he’s working on a game, and in his fast-paced industry, missing a deadline is not allowed.

In his job, Day answers to many people who are expecting high-q uality games. That’s a lot of responsibility, but Day believes these demands help him do his job better. Part of the excitement for him is not just playing a game, but also being able to share it with others.

“With a finished product, it’s really great to finally be able to sit down with my friends and family, and say, ‘Look, this is what I’ve been doing all this time. Let’s play it together.’”

About 20, 000 years ago, much of Europe, Asia, North and South America was covered by huge sheets of ice, each many kilometers thick. Since then, the ice has gradually melted and the ice sheets have retreated. Today, the

only ice she ets on Earth’s land masses are found in Antarctica and Greenland. Some ice also occurs as glaciers in mountainous regions and as floating ice floes (浮冰块) in the Arctic Ocean and around Antarctica.

At first sight, these remote left-overs from the last Ice Age seem of little importance for most of us today. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Many scientists believe that our planet is warming as a result of the greenhouse gases that we are pumping into the atmosphere. If the planet becomes warmer, the ice sheets will start to melt, causing sea level to rise perhaps several meters by the end of this century. Such a rise would cause widespread flooding of low-lying coastal areas and threaten many large cities.

Observations from space suggest that parts of the major ice sheets are beginning to melt more rapidly. Meanwhile, recent satellite images have also shown that unusually large areas of sea ice have been melting during the Arctic summer. Although sea level will not be affected by the melting of the floating ice, there will be other important environmental changes. For example, ice sheets act like a mirror, reflecting sunlight and cooling Earth. If the ice disappears, Earth is likely to become warmer and major climate changes could occur. Wildlife living in the polar regions may also be destroyed.

Cosmetic surgery (整容手术) is not something to be entered into lightly. Unfortunately, in this modem world, we have become confused by very narrow standards of beauty. Images of celebrities who never seem to age are seen

everywhere these days. We forget the fact that most of these images are the result of super photo manipulation (处理), driven by the incredibly powerful beauty industry. We are all different — why should we all look the same? Isn’t there more to life than undergoing surgery in order to have the same boring face that everybody else wants to have?
