“The price of books for our students is just gettin g higher and higher and, combined with the rising cost of tuition,it’s killing these students,”said Peter Jason,a college professor.“Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America.Almost half of them have at least one part—time job.In fact, one of my students has three jobs. And she still manages to have high scores and go to school full—time.”

Textbook prices are traditionally high.Adding to that problem, many college teachers change textbooks year after year;they either upgrade to a new edition or switch to an entirely different textbook. This further hurts students because if an instructor no longer uses a particular textbook, that book has no resale value.

Dr.Jason decided to make lire a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking.“Many books have an increased price because of CD—ROMs,lots of color photographs and pictures.I talked to my students, and many of them, like me,prefer to keep things simple! So,a few years ago,I wrote my own textbook.Compared to most other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one—third the price. That is,$30 instead of $90.When I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages, For only $7.00,they had almost a new book Now my looseleaf textbook enjoys great popularity among the students.Maybe in the future more writers and publishers will try it.”

An African—born British scientist received an environment research prize for showing how bees can be used to reduce conflict between people and elephants.Lucy King’s work proved that beeh ive (峰房)“fences”can keep elephants out of African farmers’ fields. The animals are scared of bees, which can bite them inside their long noses, and flee when they hear buzzing(蜂鸣声).Dr King's work offers an intelligent solution to an age—old challenge, while providing further confirmation of the importance of bees to people and a really clever way of preserving the world's

largest land animal for current and future generations.Working in Kenya, Dr King and her team showed that more than 90% of elephants will flee when they hear the sounds of buzzing bees.Afterwards, they also found that elephants produce a special sound to warn their fellows of the danger. They used the findings to construct barriers where beehives are woven into a fence, keeping the elephants away from places where people live and grow food.

A twoyear project involving 34 farms showed that elephants trying to go through the fences

would shake them, disturbing the bees.Later, the fences were adopted by farming communities in three Kenyan districts —— who also made increased amounts of money from selling honey.

As Africa's population grows, competition for space between people and elephants is becoming more serious, and there are fatalities on both sides. The same is true in parts of Asia.Sri Lanka alone sees the deaths of all estimated 60 people and 200 elephants each year from conflict.

Lucy King now wants to see whether the Kenyan technique will work in other parts of Africa ——and perhaps, eventually, in Asia.

Long bus rides are like televisions shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not.Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window."Buy Super Clean Toothpaste." "Drink Good'n Wet Root Beer." "Fill up with Pacific Gas." Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of "You Need It! Buy It Now!"

The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you've traveled that way before.Usually some things have changed———new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it's fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so.If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left—hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down.Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride.Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you've got to be careful of what kind of food you eat.Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.

The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there's a

kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat of course, has become harder as the hours have passed.By now you've sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the arm rests or even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at the right time-there are just no more ways to sit.

71.According to the writer, long bus rides and TV shows m similar in that_________.A.they are both long and boring, with commercials disturbing you all the time

B.they both have a beginning, middle, and an end, with commercials in between

C.they are both exciting, with new things to see in every three or four minutes

D.they both make you sit in your seat uncomfortably for a very long time

72.The writer sounds as if he likes__________.

A.reckless bus drivers B.sleeping on bus trips

C.salty food D.commercials

73.The writer thinks that the end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning because both are___________.

A.tiring B.comfortable C.exciting.D.boring 74.When passengers get tired,they tend to_____________.

A.watch the commercials B.eat food

C.cross their legs D.change their ways to sit

75.What is the purpose of this passage?

A.To warn people of the danger on long bus trips.

B.To persuade readers to take a long bus trip.

C.To describe the writer’s own feelings from long bus trips.

D.To explain how bus trips and television shows differ.

第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

[1]Handwritten thank—you letters are such a simple way of making other people feel good, it is strange that so few people write them anymore. At work,a thank—you letter to employees is unbelievably effective. It costs little and has no side effects.ne effort involved in writing letters is very low.The pleasure on receiving them is very high. This makes them an excellent way to reward and motivate staff.

[2]Doug Conant, manag er of Campbell’s Soup Company since 2001,knows the power of thank—you letters. He said that every day he works with an assistant, combing the company for people deserving thanks. He then writes them a thank—you letter.Over the past 10 years he has sent 30,000 thank—you letters to his employees—more than 10 each day.The reward is huge:his company has remained one of the most successful in its field for years.

But if these letters are so uplifting, why don’t more managers write them?

[3]There seem _____________________________.Firstly6, chief executives running companies think their own work is more valuable than that of others.Since no one ever writes them thank—you letters they don’t write any themselves.Secondly, they aren’t close enough to the business to kno w who deserves thanks.Thirdly, they have forgotten the strange human truth that almost everyone

would do almost anything in return for a few words of appreciation.

[4]In these days of such busy schedules and people running all over the place and trying to get ahead, sometimes we forget the simplest things in life are the most powerful and rewarding. You need to think to yourself about a time someone sent you a thank—you and how much it meant to you.Always remember to “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you!”

76.Which sentence in the text is closest in meaning to the following one?

It is not at all difficult to write letters.
