Families should not waste their money on organic food, the government has warned. They should instead spend their money on whatever they can afford, even if it means eating frozen vegetables. The government now faces calls to end £20 million of subsidies to organic farming.

A recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition found organic crops

have up to 60 percent more antioxidants (抗氧化物) than

non-organic crops. But critics claim there is still no

evidence that organic food is a healthier option. Amid growing

concern that too few people are eating enough fruit and vegetables, the government is at pains to stress that families feeling the pinch should not waste their money on organic food. Just 30 percent of people meet the recommendation to eat five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Government frontbencher (前座议员) Baroness Jolly said, “Organic products provide a useful extension of consumer choice, but it is worth emphasizing that,

nutritionally, they are no better and no worse than conventional products. The only benefit of organic farming was enjoyed by birds, insects, mammals and plants.” “It is up to the consumers to decide how they spend their money on their fruit and vegetables. There are many reasons why an individual might wish to choose organic products but nutritional benefit should not be one of them,” she added.

Chief Executive Helen Browning said, “We know that people choose organic food because they believe it is better for them, also well as for wildlife, animal welfare and the environment, and this research backs up what people think about organic food.”

4.The government is encouraging people to________.

A.eat more fruit and vegetables

B.do more research on food

C.pay attention to their health

D.protect the environment

5.According to Baroness Jolly, ________.

A.organic products are better than common food

B.organic products can't provide better nutrition

C.people should be urged to buy organic products

D.organic foods are good for environment protection

6.What's Helen Browning's attitude to organic food?

A.Mixed. B.Doubtful.

C.Positive. D.Worried.

A GRANDMOTHER, Michelle Riotton, 78, survived after falling down a mountain valley. She set off for a walk alone dressed only in a light jacket and trousers. “I slipped into a valley!” said Mrs Riotton, who said the fall happened in a deep forest close to her home village.

It was warm and sunny when the accident happened, but

temperatures dropped to very low when night fell, and it

rained. “I wasn't afraid,” said Mrs Riotton. “But I was

worried that my children and grandchildren would become too

worried about me.” Mrs Ri otton said she covered herself in leaves when feeling cold, taking very small bites of two biscuits which she had in her pocket and drinking rainwater which fell down her face.

She spent six nights before she was found on Saturday. She was lying at the bottom of the valley, which was less than a mile from her home. The search had once been stopped, but Patrice Fossard, one of her neighbors, insisted that the search continue. “There was no way we could give up her, even if deep inside we felt we had little hope of finding her alive,” said Mr Fossard. “It was a miracle that Michelle was finally found.”

Mrs Riotton said she would be taking life easier from now on. “Enough is enough!” she said. “No more forests —don't want to visit one again.”

A mountain policeman said walking alone in the mountain was not recommended and that Mrs Riotton should have carried a mobile phone with her. “The mountains are particularly dangerous at this time of year as sunny afternoons can quickly change into cold, wet and stormy eve nings.” he said. “Anybody walking into the mountains should carry safety equipment and be prepared for any kind of emergency.”

To begin with, we need to be honest with others. Lies will surely make people stay far away from us in the long run. After all, honesty is the best policy. Second, we have to be humble enough. Even the most consistent W1ones donate an average of just three to four times during their lifetime. Though that certainly helps th em feel appreciated, w hat is e v en more pleasing is the text they recei v e each time their blood is used to help someone in need.S Karolina Wiberg, manager of the Stockholm blood service, believes this small gesture not only results in repeat donors, but helps bring in new ones.
