The second graders have been busy these months!
In September, we spent a lot of time reviewing what we learned in first grade, and we took our first field trip. It was an apple themed field trip. We went to Applebee’s for a tour and lunch and then we traveled to Niemen’s Apple Orchard (果园). Some students were able to make their own apple sandwiches and each student left the orchard with a bag of apples that they picked right off the trees!

Do you know the story “The Boy and the Starfish (海星)”? It goes something like this: A man is walking along a beach after a high tide(潮水). He sees a boy throwing starfish back into the sea. Members of an after-school program in New Hampshire, USA liked the story so much that they named their club after it.
The “Starfish Club”members do a lot for shelter(收容所) animals, but want to make a difference to other animals too. They learned that a boy in Massachusetts helped get a law passed. The law bans(禁止) the sale of shark fins in his state. The kids in the club decided to try to do the same in New Hampshire.
People cut off the fins of sharks and then throw the sharks back into the ocean to die. The
fins are sold and used to make shark fin soup. Each year tens of millions of sharks are killed for their fins.
The club members talked with lawmakers about banning the trade in shark fins in their state. Lawmakers listened to what the kids said, but in the end, the law wasn't passed. At least not this time.
“I feel proud of myself and my club for working very hard,”says 10-year-old Payton Paradis. “I am sad that the law wasn't passed, but I hope we have encouraged many kids around the world to keep trying, no matter what the problem is. And remember: Fins belong on sharks, not in soup!
