Patricia was worried. She had a job interview, and she wanted to look good. She decided to get some new clothes. The store owner, Pallas Hansen, helped Patricia find a suit. But when she left the store, she didn’t pay for the suit!

How could Patricia do this? She was in a special store called Career Closet in San Jose, California. Pallas Hansen and Charlotte Krumwiede started this nonprofit store to help women. They knew that many women don’t find jobs because they don’t have the right clothes for a job interview. Women who don’t have a lot of money have to use their money to buy food and clothes for their children. They can’t buy clothes for themselves.

Pallas and Charlotte started the store in 1992 after they heard about a store like this in Chicago. V olunteers work in the store. Working women donate most of the clothes to the store. This makes it possible for the

customers at Career Closet to get clothes for free.

Career Closet has helped 2,500 San Jose women, but clothes aren’t the only things women get at the store. They also get confidence. Patricia is 36 years old. Her husband was hurt in an accident, and Patricia needed a job to support her seven children. She went to Career Closet and got a jacket, a skirt, and a blouse. “The whole day made me feel spec ial,” she said. Patricia was a success at her interview, and she got the job. One reason why she got it was that she was wearing the right clothes for the workplace.

Pallas says,” I love this job. Sixty percent of the women get jobs. It’s like being a fairy god-mother.”

Don’t talk to me; I’m busy with my iPhone

Riding a London subway, a person from China will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness—people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet reflection, nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(乘车上下班的人). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000—yes, that’s 40,000—“apps”(programs downloaded for the iPhone)have been designed. Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-k illers. One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks(坦克). Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination. ISteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “ steam” on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be another choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music—iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film. The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all this entertainments, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

28. People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because ______.

A. they are busy reading books

B. they are not very polite

C. thinking about their private things

D. they are busy playing with their electronic equipment

29. Those who like war games can download _____ to their iPhones.

A. iShoot

B. iPod

C. ISteam

D. Tube Exits

30. The underlined word “occupied” in the last paragraph probably means _____.

A. delighted

B. busy

C. controlled

D. amused

31. The article tells us that _____.

A. London commuters are unfriendly to strangers

B. with all the new time-killers, London commuters often forget to get off the train

C. technology is changing the way London commuters spend their traveling time

D. Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 40,000 iPhones

D

The world is filled with smart, talented and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago, my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed within just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine. I was amazed. The sad truth is that only great talent is not enough.

I am often shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year. A business consultant (顾问) who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle with money. It was this business consultant that gave me the phase, “They are one skill away from great wealth”.

There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke(破产)’”.And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial(财务的)intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live within their means”. They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.

When I ask the classes I teach, “How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask, “So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.

32.How did the mechanic find the problem in the car?

A. by listening to the engine

B. by listening to what the author said

C. by pulling it to the garage

D. by driving it

33.Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?

A. They have no talents.

B. They have no good skills.

C. They don’t work enough.

D. They don’t have financial intelligence.

34.The success of McDonald's lies in its .

A. skills at making hamburgers

B. excellent service

C. talented workers

D. good business systems

35.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. The world lacks smart, talented and gifted people.

B. The world lacks skilled workers.

C. The world lacks people like McDonald’s.

D. The world lacks excellent doctors and dentists.

Dear Mr. Lee,

I’m glad to write to share with you my happiness of being admitted to my ideal college, and particularly I’m writing to convey my sincere thanks to you.

The time I received the offer, I know all my efforts finally pay off. College life distinguishes a lot from senior school life. Undoubtedly, it’s another life combined with challenge and sweet memories. I can’t wait to experience it.

A million thanks to your encouraging words, which never fail to brighten my way ahead. There was a time when I was totally at a loss, doubting that I could make any progress in study. It’s you who helped cheer me up. Never will I forget what you said--- doors open to the very man with full confidence and instant action. Without your help, I could never have enjoyed such a joyful harvest. I really appreciate your instruction. And I’ll appreciate it if you could come to my celebrating party on August the 8th.

Thanks again, my beloved teacher. Wish you all the best.

Yours sincerely,
