The Web as a Way of Life

If you ask people today why they use mobile phones to communicate with their friends or why they turn to TV for entertainment they will look at you as if you are crazy. These things have become such an integral part of life that they are no longer noticed, let alone remarked on.

In the same way, within a decade no one will notice the web. it will be just there. It will be a way of life. People will use it for shopping, education, entertainment and communication. They will invent new uses for it.

A change like this is generational. Old people have to learn something about new things outside their everyday life, while kids who grow up with a new technology simply treat it as given.

In the future, everyone’s business card will have an email address. Every lawyer, every doctor and every business-from large to small-will be connected. On the other hand, the variety of activities on the web will be broadening at an amazing rate. You can find all kinds of interesting materials on the web.

Many sites will have a huge traffic flow. People will trade the time they now spend reading the paper or watching TV for time spent surfing the web. Americans, particularly young Americans, will spend less time in front of the TV, and more on the web.

We usually overestimate what we can do in two years and underestimate what we can do in ten. The web will be as much a way of life as the car by 2008 and probably before.

24. The web will be an integral part of life because ________.

A. we will use it to do lots of things

B. it will replace the TV

C. we won’t notice it is there

D. it will help us to lead better lives

25. In the future ________.

A. all business cards will have email addresses

B. doctors and lawyers will not use the web

C. traffic will be controlled on the web

D. all business will be done on the web

26. According to the last paragraph it can be most probably inferred that ________.

A. we have no idea how the web will develop

B. there will soon be more computers than cars

C. we are very good at predicting the future

D. the development of the web will be faster than we expect

27. The writer is ________ about the development of web.

A. unsure

B. fearful

C. confident

D. crazy

There are many places to go on safari(观赏野生动物) in Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana’s Okavango Delta must rank a& one of the world’s most exciting wildlifejourneys.

Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience.

The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes full of water lilies, tends to be more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face,it is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and tension levels rise suddenly though, as does your heart rate, as you move closer to them.

In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace, with golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Sedate as they are, rides at this time of day are still very imp ressive. As the sun’s rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.

Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back on your day, you will find it hard to deny that a horseback safari is as close as you will ever come to answering the call of the wild.

30. What does the underlined word “Sedate”in the fourth paragraph most probably mean?

A. Wild and romantic.

B. Slow and peaceful.

C. Hungry and thirsty.

D. Active and excited.

31. The author introduces the riding experience in the Okavango Delta mainly by ________.

A. following space order

B. following time order

C. making classifications

D. giving examples

More and more people read an iPad in bed, reserved as a place for sleep, before they go to sleep.

Charles, a professor from Harvard Medical School% and hi& colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad f6r four hours before sleeps Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.

When the people read on the iPad as compared to the paper books-they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers conclude in today5s journal article that because of the rise of

e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and teenagers, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Charles and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note” “Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (过滤)short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

32. In Charles9 experiment, the group of people were asked to ________.

A. sit in a row And receive the strict tests

B. have their sleep patterns observed all night

C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time

D. have their blood tested per hour during the trial.

33. The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to ________.

A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day

B. fall asleepmore easily

after reading

C. become less energetic the next morning

D. have a lotmore melatonin

secretion

34. The special software recently developed can ________.

A. remove the blue light from your devices completely

B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength

C. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading

D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely

35. Which of the following can be best served as the tide of the passage?

A. No e-reading in bed before sleep

B. New software for night e-readers

C. Wrong behaviors before bedtime

D. No games on iPad in bed

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

What will man be like in 5,000 or even 50,000 yearfrom now on? We can only make

a guess, of course. However,we can be sure that he will greatly differ from what he

is today. 36

Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. 37 Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we can imagine that man will continue to grow taller. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we make less use of out* arms and legs. 38 We can’t walk farther. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modem life. What about our brain? As time goes on, we shall have to use our brains more and more and eventually we shall need larger ones! 39 Our head, in particular the forehead, will larger.

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may be true. 40 He will still be a human being with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

What I Learned From The Homeless Man Under The Bridge

I was out for my usual morning run and found myself hard to bear the summer heat,

I saw two young, dirtymen standing next to their sleeping bags. One smiled and gently raised his hand as if signaling “hell o” b ut didn’t 42 a word. He wasn’t asking for anything. I smiled and made the same 43 back to him.

Are there many ways in which we are 55 ? Absolutely! I can reflect on times in my life when, like him, I was in a situation I hadnever expected, times that I had no money, times that I felt at a 56 point. And as he may have been feeling this morning, times when I needed someone to stop and acknowledge me.

We 57 have a choice as to whether we move towards separation or connection. Separation is looking at the 58 person and focusing on how messy or untidy he looks, and 59 why he has a 7-11 Slurpee cup if he is out of money. Connection is acknowledging that he affected my day by 60 out to me. Pay attention today and notice whether you tend to move towards separation or towards connection. Pay attention today and notice whether that is working well for you.

书面表达

Dear Sir /Madam ,

I’m Li Hua, a Chinese student taking part in the exchange program in your university. I’m writing to ask for an early leave.

I have been here for half a year, but I have some difficulty in adapting myself to life here, especially the daily diet. Besides, the major I’m learning here doesn’t go well as expected.

Sometimes I even can’t understand what the teachers say in class. All mentioned above has set off my homesickness and put me in low spirits. Thus, after months of frustration, I eventually decided to end this program ahead of schedule and go back to my home.

Thank you for considering my application.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

Brain implant lets man with paralysis move and feel with his hand. A brain implant has restored movement and a sense of touch in the hand of a man with a severe spinal cord injury.Patrick Ganzer at Battelle Memorial Institute in the US and his colleagues have developed a brain-computer interface(BCI)that(21)______(allow)28-year-old Ian Burkhart to grasp and feel objects again. Burkhart has a severe upper spinal cord injury and has complete paralysis in his hands and legs,(22)______ can move his elbows and shoulders. He had a brain implant inserted in2014as part of research aiming to restore movement in(23)______right arm. The BCI uses the implant(24)______(record)brain activity that is sent to a processor that decodes these signals into movements, which in turn feed in to bands around the forearm which electrically activate his hand muscles. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last six years:he can play[the video game]Guitar Hero, swipe a credit card and do about20different hand grips,”says Ganzer. But because Burkhart had no sensation in his hands,he previously had no sense of touch or pressure when(25) ______(grasp)objects,and if blindfolded, was not able to detect small objects such as a pencil. The researchers discovered that(26)______Burkhart’s hand cannot feel anything, the brain implant stills registers a faint sensory signal when he touches an object. They boosted this signal by incorporating a band around the bicep which vibrates when Burkhart’s hand receives sensory information. As a result,Burkhart is able to detect objects by touch alone. The BCI is also able to detect different levels of touch and adjust the strength of Burkhart’s hand movements depending on the object–a light grasp, for example, for a paper cup. The researchers believe it is the first BCI(27)______can simultaneously restore movement and touch. When the brain implant was inserted,it(28)______(intend)solely for controlling movement, but the(29)______(add) touch is possible because there is some overlap(30)______the sensory and motor areas in Burkhart’s brain, says Ganzer.
