Waving hands or twitching(抽动) face muscles might not be the first things you think about when preparing for a job interview. But as body language counts for a large part of how people know us, actions really do speak louder than words. S o how can you adjust your body language for success?

B efore your job interview, ask a friend to identify any bad habits you may have such as playing with your hair or drumming your fingers. You may be surprised to l earn about some bad behavior that you weren’t aware of.

Next, stage a mock(模拟的) job interview with a friend and record it by video. “Viewing your body language as other people do is a valuable experience,” says Kelly from Kelly Speech Communications. “But if you want to gain more confidence, a questioning session with a friend is useful for noting any negative body language that occurs under pressure, such as foot-bouncing or lip-biting. Bear in mind that swaying(摇摆) and face touching can all threaten the success of a job interview.”

And if that’s not enough to give you an air of confidence, Kelly says that observing confident people and modeling their open, friendly and accepting gestures will also help you. It enables your actions to be read as you want, and decreases your risk of sending mixed messages.

Wh en it comes to the job interview itself, Kelly recommends creating instant intimate(密切的) relationships with the interviewer by being sensitive to their body positions or poses, and adapting your movements and expressions accordingly. But if you find yourself forgetting words, concentrate more on yours elf. Maintaining good eye contacts will also help convey trust and understanding.

Finally, the perfect handshake, like most body language, is all about finding a happy medium that you’re comfortable with.

45. Which of the following might be the best title of the text?

A. Body Language Tips for a Job Interview

B. Some Bad Habits in a Job Interview

D. Suggestions on How to Get a Job

B. making prepa rations

C

A research stu dy was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania to determine to what extent a person’s body language can affect the impression people form of him. The following are research results:

·55 percent of the impression people form of y ou is based on your body gestures.

·38 percent is based on the tone of your voice.

·Only 7 percent is ba sed on what you say.

The shocking results show that body language (including both body gestures and voice tone) is more responsible for impression people form of you than your words.

Many people find it weird(不可思议的) that reading body language can tell us the real intentions of the people we are dealing

with, but when you keep in mind th at there are liars, dishonest people and people who don’t know how to express their emotio ns, the results make a lot of sense.

Let me give you another example to show you that depending on body language can be much accurate than depending on what people say. Let’s suppose that you met a stranger who wears a horrible looking shirt. Will you tell him your opinions? Of course not. Most people suppress t heir emotions and opinions because of the rules that their society forces upon them, and that’s why their real opinions are reflected in their body language.

Body language is now widely used in politics, sales, negotiations and any other situation where communication between people is involv ed. Body language can also help you leave the impression you want. For example by using proper body lan guage you can appear confident even if you are anxious or afraid. Knowing that body language is so useful, you might want to know more about it. Please find it in my newly published book--- The Interesting Body Language.

49. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of reading body language?

A.I t helps people distinguish honest people from the dishonest ones.

B.It enables people to express their emotions properly.

C.It makes the rules of society progress gradually.

D.I t lets people have a deeper understanding of others.

50. What does the underlined word “suppress” mea n in the second to last paragraph?

A. Control.

B. Enlarge.

C. Reveal.

D. Inform.

51. The purpose of the last paragraph is to _______.

B. teach people how to read body language

C. analyze the importance of knowing body language

D. show the usage of body language

Thoreau and other naturalists have praised the benefits of nature to your state of mind, but there are some researches showing how nature makes you smarter.

When you exercise, do you go to the gym or around your neighborhood or in a local park? Research has found that exposure to the great outdoors improves cognitive(认知的) function. Experts have called this attention restoration therapy(注意力修复治疗).

In one study, researchers from the University of Michigan asked volunteers to complete a task designed to challenge memory and attention. The volunteers then took a walk in either a park or in downtown. After the walk, volunteers returned to the lab and were asked to retest on the task. The performance on the memory and attention task greatly improved in people following the walk in the park, but did not improve in those who walked downtown.

Why does nature make you smarter? According to the exper ts, one reason has to do with how nature affects your attention. One is involuntary(无意识的), where your attention is attracted by some stimuli(刺激物). And the other one is directed attention, where your control your attention. Directed attention is important for memory, resolving conflict and reducing absent mind.

Being in nature exposes you to stimuli that involve your involuntary attention. It gives your directed attention a rest and a chance to become renewed. When you are a in a city, you are actually vigilant(警觉的), your directed attention is turned on and cannot get a rest.

Richard Luov’s book, Last Child in the Woods, was about the negative effects of a nature deficit on children, but his new book, The Nature Principle, describes how adults are equally at risk if they seldom spend time with nature.

If you can’t be in nature today, get a screen saver of nature. But I think it will be better for you to go out and experience the real things.

52. Which of the following probably belongs to the attention restoration therapy?

A. Doing exercise in the gym.

B. Reading Thoreau’s works at home.

C. Shopping in big malls.

D. Walking or running through a local park.

53. From the third paragraph, we can learn all EXCEPT that ______.

A. the study was conducted by experts of University of Michigan

B. the study was about people’s memory and attention

C. the study indicates nature has a good effect on memory and attention

D. the participants should walk in both the park and downtown

54. According to the text, which one is considered to involve your involuntary attention?

A. Remembering things.

B. Relaxing in nature.

C. Solving problems.

D. Being cautious.

55. Which of the following would be the author most likely advise readers to do?

A. Get a picture of nature.

B. Avoid watching urban images.

C. Read Richard Luov’s new book.

D. Go out and spend time in nature.

A Visit to the White House

When you hear the words “the White House”, what comes to mind--- the President’s house, or just an important historical building?

When my family visited the White House Visitor Center in Washington D.C. in April earlier this year, we learned that we could tour the building. 56 And we finally got them for November!

As we were waiting on this cold November morning on the White House S outh Lawns I was filled with excitement. The first thing that struck me was the colorful flowers and well-maintained lawns(草坪). 57 In the East Wing hallway on the ground floor, I saw the portraits(画像)of past Presidents and events during their presidency framed on the walls. The library had over 2,700 books. The Vermeil Room and China Room displayed collections of silverware and china.

We walked up a stairway to the State Floor. The East Room---- the largest in the White House, was the most impressive because of its size and décor(装饰). 58 The Green, Blue and Red Rooms, on the same floor, get their name because of the colors of the furniture and walls. These rooms are used for entertaining state guests.

I visited the State Dining room next. It was enormous(巨大的)! We left our tour through the Cross Hall. This serves as a White House reception area. I felt very important walking through the hall. 59 The grand Steinway piano and the steps leading to the President’s residence caught my eye at the Entrance Hall. The President and his family live on the second and third floors of the White House.

My only regret was that I couldn’t visit the office of US President in the West Wing.

The White House is a magnificent(庄严的) building and is very important to the nation. 60 The White House is not only the President’s house, but also his office and a monument for the nation to share and celebrate.

A.Imagine working in the building where you liv e!

B.This is the room where the President usually meets the press.

C.We went through many security checks before entering the building.

D.It is very important due to the many historical events that have occurred in it.

E.As soon as we got home, my family applied for tickets through a Congressman(国会议员).

F.The Cross Hall and the East room are usually where the President addresses the press or the nation.

G.The Entrance Halls---- an extension of the Cross Hall, took us to the front entrance of the White House.

A ◆Welwitschia mirabilis Title: the world’s most resistant plant It’s not pretty to look at, but welwits chia mirabilis is unique. It consists of only two leaves and a strong stem with roots. Two leaves continue to grow and the stem thickens and can grow to be almost 2 meters high and 8 meters wide. Its lifespan is 400 to 1,500 years. It can survive up to five years with no rain. The plant is said to be very tastyeither raw or baked in hot ashes. ◆Dionaea muscipula Title: the Venus Fly Trap Dionaea muscipula is the most famous carnivorous(肉食性的) plant due to the active and efficient nature of its unique trap. It may be famous, but it’s also threatened. It produces a short leaf that forms two sides of a trap. Each side contains some sensitive hairs. When it is touched two to three times, the trap will shut in less than a second, fast enough to catch flies and other insects. The leaf, once closed, produces some enzymes(酶) that slowly dissolve the insects and supply the plant with food. ◆Rafflesia arnoldii Title: the world’s largest flower Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower in the world, is an exotic and rare plant. The flower is 3 feet across and weighs 15-24 pounds. However, you wouldn’t want to grow it in your garden. In a rainforest-type environment, it gives off a most unpleasant smell, which is somewhat like rotten meat. This is why it is often called the Corpse Plant by some natives of Indonesia where it comes. Its flowers only last for three days to a week. ◆Euphorbia obese Title: the Baseball Plant Euphorbia obese is known as the Baseball Plant. Over-harvesting by plant collectors for its interesting and curious appearance has severely reduced the wild population. However, it has become very common now. By growing euphorbia obese in large numbers, many gardens have been working to ensure that the plants being traded and sold among plant collectors are not wild plants. 21. From the passage, we know that __________. A. welwitschia mirabilis is very beautiful B. dionaea muscipula is famous for its trap C. rafflesia arnoldii feels like rotten meat 1

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
