Dear Earthmen,

I have enjoyed my stay on your interesting unusual planet. I

think I understand the life on earth now and 1 would like to give

you my impressions.

First of all you live in boxes. Every morning you leave your

big boxes and get into smaller boxes on wheels. All these small

boxes race around and around, and finally stop to rest. You then

leave these boxes on wheels and go to very large tall boxes.

After testing all days you get back in your little boxes and

return to your big boxes. There you sit and stare at tiny glowing

boxes with moving pictures on the front.

Only one thing puzzles me. One day I went to a football

game. A hunch of angry boys fought over a little round ball.

Everyone yelled for them to stop but they kept on fighting. They

were angry, I suppose, about being cooped up in boxes all day.

Thank you earthmen for this chance to get to know you.

Gratefully,

The man from the Mars

Most Americans enjoy moving from place to place very

often. In some states only one house in five has people living in it

who have been there for more than five years. One may be born

in one city, and go to school in another. He may finish his middle

school education in two or three cities and attend a college far

across the country. And when he has en-tered business, he may

possibly move from job to job. Moving from job to job, or

jo-hopping, is a very common practice in the United States.

This practice is not good by and large. Yet every chance to

change a job offers the worker an opportunity to move up to a

higher position and to get better wages. And job-hopping also

gives employers—the bosses, the managers the—chance to

benefit from the new ideas and skills that different people bring

to their firms or factories. Then, most A-mericans love traveling.

People often drive their automobiles 120 to 160 kilometers just to

have dinner with a friend or even fly to Europe and back just for

watching a football match. It is because of this—the fact that

Americans are in constant motion and, in this way, it is also easy

for you to become friends with Americans. And the friendship

can be close and strong for a while, but then disappears as soon

as the individuals move away from each other. But if these

people should meet again, even years later, they would be

delighted to continue the friendship. So don’t be unhappy when

you fail to find lifetime friendships or relationships in the United

States.

60.“Job-hopping”means _______.

A. moving from place to place

B. looking for work

C. hoping to get a job

D. moving from job to job

61. Why do Americans change their jobs so frequently? Because _______.

A. they have the habits of moving

B. they want a higher position and better wages

C. job-hopping benefits the bosses

D. it gives them a good opportunity of traveling

62. It is inferred that _______.

A. Americans like to make friends but don’t specially attach importance to it

B. it’s impossible to find lifetime friendships or relationships in the United States

C. Americans ignore friendships and relationships with others

D. Americans make friends just for fun

63. Personally, tbaauthor _______ job-hopping.

A. is against

B. thinks well of

C. wants to stop

D. doesn’t go along with

We all know what it is like to be unable to turn your head

because of a cold in the muscles of your neck, or because an

unexpected twist has made your neck ache and stiff. Your whole

body feels tight. The slightest move makes you jump with pain.

Nothing could be worse than a pain in the neck.

That is why we use phrase to describe some people who

give you the same feeling. We have all met such people.

One is the man who always seems to be clapping his hands

—often at the wrong time—during a performance in the theater.

He keeps you from hearing the actors.

Even worse are those who can never arrive before the

curtain goes up and play begins. They come hurrying down to

your row of seats. You are comfortably settled down, with your

hat and heavy coat in your lap. You must stand up to ;et them

pass. You are proud of your self—control after they have settled

into their seats…Well, what now…Good God, one of them is up

again. He forgot to go to the men’s room, and once more you

have to stand up, hanging on to your hat and coat to let him pass.

Now, that is “a pain in the neck.”

Another, well—known to us all, is the person sitting behind

you in the movies. His mouth is full of popcorn; he is chewing

loudly, or talking between bites to friends next to him. None of

them remain still. Up and down, back and forth, they go—for

another bag of popcorn, or something to drink.

Then, there is the man sitting next to you at a lunch counter

smoking a smelly cigar. He wants you to enjoy it too, and blows

smoke across you food into your mouth.

We must not forget the man who comes into a bus or

subway car and sits down next to you, just as close as you will let

him. You are reading the newspaper and he leans over and

stretches his rock so that he can read the paper with you. He may

even turn the paper to the next page before you are ready for it.

We also call such a person a “rubber neck,”always

stretching his neck to where it does not belong, like neighbors

who watch all your visitors. They enjoy invading your privacy.

People have a strong dislike for rubbernecks. They hate being

spied upon.

68.Where can you find this passage?

A.Medicine dictionaries. B.Social science books,

C.Kids' comic books. D.Science text books.

69.How do you feel when late comers walk back and forth in

front of you in a cinema?

A.Ignored. B .Bored. C.Disturbed D.Relaxed.

70.A “rubber neck”often __________. .

A.says bad words behind people.

B.quarrels face to face with neighbors.

C.bargains the price with sales women

D.asks about other people’s business

选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world

for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve nev er been before. But

just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of

behavior that should be followed when on line.

71 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other

person’s shoes. For anything you’re about to send: ask yoursel f,

“Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no,

rewrite and reread.

72 If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your

instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to

do so.

73 If it was caused by a disagreement with another

member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it.

Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the

chat room.

74 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they

may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.

75 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended. It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

A. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.

C. Everyone was new to the network once.

D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

Edwarda O’Bara was a 17-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes(糖尿病)medication and slipped into a diabetic coma.

A Larry was on another of his underwater expeditions(探险) but this time, it was different. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for. Larry first began diving when he was his daughter's age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children his age were not even allowed to dive. After the first expedition, Larry's later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, he was limited to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures. Larry's first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them. Fortunately for him, a man offered to take him around the different spots for free.
