我常常听人说，他想读一点书，苦于没有时间。我不太同情这种说法。不管他是多么忙，他总不至于忙得一点时间都抽不出来。一天当中如果抽出一小时来读书，一年就有三百六十五个小时，十年就有三千六百五十小时，积少成多，无论研究什么都会有惊人的成就。Often I hear a person say that he intends to read some books but is short of time. However, I disagree to this kind of wording. No matter how busy he may appear, he can not be too occupied to possess any time. If he finds an hour to read everyday, he will have 365 hours yearly and 3650 hours in ten years. Accumulating bit by bit, no matter what subject he studies, he will result in extraordinary achievements.

零碎的时间最可宝贵，但是最容易丢弃。

Odd hours appear the most precious but they are likely to disappear easily.

我记得陆放翁有两句诗，“呼童不应自升火，待饭未来还读书”，这两句诗给我的印象很深。

I remember Lu Fangweng’s two lines: “Calling the boy servant without response I made fire mys elf, and engaged in some reading while waiting for the meal.” Deeply these two lines impressed me.

待饭未来的时候是颇难熬的，用以读书岂不甚妙？

Waiting for a meal to come is very tedious, but how wonderful it is to do some reading!

我们的时间往往于不知不觉中被荒废掉，例如现在距开会还有五十分钟，于是什么事都不做了，磨磨蹭蹭，五十分钟便打发掉了。

Our time is often abandoned unconsciously. If there is, for example, fifty minutes to go before a meeting is started, you may dismiss your time.

如果用这时间读几页书，岂不较为受用？

But if you read a couple of pages, is there anything more pleasant?

当然恐惧还是有些道理的。我们正处在一个变化的时代。我们深感变化的必要性，我们正在

变，我们必须变。

Indeed horror has its reason to appear. Now we' re in a changing era and we deeply feel the necessity of changing. We' re changing and we have to change.

我们抵挡不住变化，就像树叶到秋天挡不住要变黄、变枯，球茎在春天挡不住要钻出土壤，萌出新芽一样。

We couldn't stop the change, as leaves turn yellow and fall off the trees in autumn and bulbs can't wait breaking through the soil to sprout in spring.

我们正在变，我们正处于变化的阵痛之中，这将是一种伟大的变化。

We are changing and we are suffering from the throe caused by change. This will be a great change.

本能让我们感觉到，直觉使我们认识到这种变化。

Instinct and intuition make us sense and realize the change.

他们害怕了，因为变化带来痛苦，同时每逢重要的转变时期，一切都捉摸不定，而有生命的东西最容易受至伤害。

They are scared of changes as changes bring along pains. Meanwhile, nothing is predictable in the critical transitional period and things alive are most vulnerable.

历史的道路，不会是坦平的，有时走到艰难险阻的境界。这是全靠雄健的精神才能够冲过去的。

The course of history is never smooth. It is sometimes beset with difficulties and obstacles and nothing short of a heroic spirit can help surmount them.

一条浩浩荡荡的长江大河，有时流到很宽阔的境界，平原无际，一泻万里。

A mighty long river sometimes flows through a broad section with plains lying boundless on either side, its waters rolling on non-stop for thousands upon thousands of miles.

有时流到很逼狭的境界，两岸丛山迭岭，绝壁断崖，江河流于其间，回环曲折，极其险峻。Sometimes it comes up against a narrow section flanked by high mountains and steep cliffs, winding through a course with many a perilous twist and turn.

民族生命的进展，其经历亦复如是。

A nation, in the course of its development, fares like wise.

人类在历史上的生活正如旅行一样。旅途上的征人所经过的地方，有时是坦荡平原，有时是崎岖险路。

The historical course of man's life is just like a journey. A traveler on a long journey passes through now a broad, level plain, now a rugged, hazardous road.

老于旅途的人，走到平坦的地方，固是高高兴兴地向前走，走到崎岖的境界，愈是奇趣横生，觉得在此奇绝壮绝的境界，愈能感到一种冒险的美趣。

While a determined traveler cheerfully continues his journey upon reaching a safe and smooth place, he finds it still more fascinating to come to a rugged place, the enormously magnificent spectacle of which, he feels, is better able to generate in him a wonderful sensation of adventure. Text 5

不消说，相识的人数是随了年龄增加的，一个人年龄越大，走过的地方当过的职务越多，相识的人理该越增加了

Needless to say, the number of acquaintances increases with one’s age. The olde r one gets, the more widely traveled one is and the more work experience one has, the more acquaintances one is supposed to have.

可是相识的人并不就是朋友。我们和许多人相识，或是因为事务关系，或是因了偶然的机缘——如在别人请客的时候同席吃过饭之类。

But not all acquaintances are friends. We come to know many people either in the way of business or by mere chance –say, having been at the same table at a dinner party.

见面时点头或握手，有事时走访或通信，口头上彼此也称为“朋友”，笔头上有时或称“仁兄”，诸如此类，其实只是一种社交上的客套，和“顿首”“百拜”同是仪式的虚伪。

We may be on nodding or hand-shaking terms, call each other “friend”, s ometimes write to each other with the salutation of “Dear So-and-So”, etc., etc. All these are, in fact, nothing but civilities of social life, as hypocritical as the polite formula dunshou (kowtow) or baibai (a hundred greetings) used after the signature in old-fashioned Chinese letter-writing.

这种交际可以说是社交，和真正的友谊相差似乎很远。

We may call them social intercourse, but they seem to have very little in common with genuine friendship.

中国是一个发展中国家，也是一个负责任的国家

China is a developing country as well as a responsible power.

中国愿意为推进合作共赢、实现可持续发展做出自己的贡献。

China is willing to make its contribution to promote win-win cooperation and realize sustainable development

中国保持经济快速健康发展，对全球经济及地区经济发展有利。

That China keeps a speedy and healthy economic increase is helpful for global and regional economic development.

改革开放20多年来，中国经济年均增长9．4％，不仅成功解决了十几亿人的温饱问题，而且使中国人民的生活总体上达到小康水平。

Since the policy of reform and opening having been carried out, China's economy enjoys an annual increase of 9. 4%. Not only the problem of food and clothing for more than one billion people has been successfully solved, but also the masses' living standard has generally reached well-to-do lev-el.

当前，中国经济发展总的形势很好。虽然经济运行中出现了一些问题，但在我们的宏观调控下，一些不健康、不稳定因素己经得到了有效抑制。

Currently, the main trend of China's economic situation is good. Although some problems had occurred, under our macro adjustment and control, some harmful and unstable factors had been ef-fectively restrained.
