Learn to Meet Challenges

One of my best days at school was a field trip to the seaside. Field

trips are very common in the UK. Most schools take their students on

geography field trips. Teachers usually take the students somewhere they

can do a scientific experiment. Popular trips are to woodland areas and

My school trip to the seaside was with my biology class. We were allowed to wear home clothes instead of our school uniforms. When we got to the seaside, we were put into groups. Each group was asked to find a different sea creature (生物) in the water in the rocks, which we call rock pools.

My group had to find little crabs (螃蟹). We had to catch them and then find the names of the crabs in our science book. Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country, or we may be misunderstood.

In the United Stated, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.

Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and half feet (69 centimeters) away and at an angle (角度), so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident,

they say, “Pardon me”, or “Excuse me”.

Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite.

For Americans, “thumbs up” means well done. “Thumbs down” means the opposite. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger (食指). Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and at them on the head when they admire them.

There is no doubt that we all have a big variety of situations or

experiences during our existence that we allow to affect the way we

think and therefore the way we feel. We all make choices, every day,

every moment. The reason we are happy or unhappy is not our

experiences but the way we deal with our experiences.

Attitude is everything! Things are the way they are, they cannot be otherwise. The problem starts when we label our experiences with our own beliefs. Our attitude is the outcome of how we feel and how we will respond. Sadly and ironically, many of us build such an attitude that instead of solving the problems we already have, we create even more problems.

So, what we can do to be happy? How can we move forward instead of backward?

The roots of our misery, problems, worries and sadness are in our thoughts. When we have negative thoughts, we are creating misery in our lives and if it's something that we don't want for our life, it is time to take control and put our brain to work to form a new

attitude by creating new positive thoughts.

You will only be happy, move forward, be the champion you are meant to be when you are honest and take action. Start to motivate your mind with positive thoughts. Start with thoughts of love, optimism, and creativity. Start by appreciating and valuing every second of life, everything you are and have, and become passionate about everything you do.

Move with the flow. Things are the way they are, they cannot be otherwise. If you row in the direction the river is flowing, its energy assists you. But, if you row against the river's flow, it is only a matter of time before you become exhausted, overwhelmed and defeated.

It is super important to be clear, to understand that happiness is not dependent on the outside world. Nobody can make you happy or unhappy. Be responsible for your life. You and only you have the power to control the way you feel.

When your desire to be happy becomes as strong as the need to breathe, you will be happy.

If there is no difference in general intelligence(智力)between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and mathematics?

It seems to be that their treatment at school is a direct cause. Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them. Interestingly, both boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine(女性的)and attractive.

However, if we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high-achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be world-wide. Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.

Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much

earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.

Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence that they are able to succeed.

Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

Through the years, the word developed. Soon a knockdown snowstorm was called a blizzard.

Imagine trying to catch a skyscraper! In 1866, it was possible. At that time, fans referred to a highflying baseball as a skyscraper. But when American cities started growing “up”, the old term was given a new meaning. The tall buildings that appeared to scrape the skies became known as skyscrapers.

Words have a wonderful way of changing. You never know when they’ll change. In 50 years, you might be driving a hamburger to work!
