Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, ol d habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name

long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡)are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford R oad and Raffles Place. Thi s i s in keeping with traditions in many countries ---- in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendshi ps between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus ---- obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along thi s road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. Thi s road is called a crescent(月牙)because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to joi n the main road again.

36.We learn from Paragraph 1 that _____.

A.the government is usually the first to name a place

B.many places tend to have more than one name

C.a ceremony will be held when a place is named

D.people prefer the place names gi ven by the government

37.What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.Change suddenly. B.Change significantly.

C.Disappear mysteriously. D.Disappear very slowly.

38.Which of the following places i s named after a person?

A.Raffles Place. B.Selector Airbase.

C.Piccadilly Circus. D.Paya Lebar Crescent.

39.Bras Basah Road i s named _______.

A.after a person B.after a place

C.after an activity D.by its shape

40.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.

B.Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.

C.The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.

D.Y oung Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

I am a writer. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(唤起)an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language i s the tool of my trade. And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.

Born in to a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California, I?ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” English. But feel embarrassed to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”, as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. I?ve heard other terms used, “limited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people?s perceptions(认识)of the limited English speaker.

I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother?s “limited” English limited my percepti on of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is ,because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

I started writing ficti on i n 1985. And for reasons I won?t get into today, I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of a better term might be described as “broken”, and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的)language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure: I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show; her intention, her feelings, the rhythm s of her speech and the nature of her thoughts. 41.By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”, the author means that ______.

A.she uses English in foreign trade

B.she is fascinated by languages

B.The limitation of the author?s perce pti on of her mother.

C.The author?s misunderstanding of “limited” English.

D.The author?s experiences of using broken English.

Tens of thousands of theatre tickets will be given away to young people next year as part of a government campaign to inspire a lifelong love for theatre.

The plan to offer free seats to people aged between 18 to 26—funded with £2.5 million of taxpayers?money—was announced yesterday by Andy Burnham, the Culture Secretary. It received a cautious welcome from some in the arts world, who expressed concern that the tickets may not reach the most underprivileged.

The plan comes as West End theatres are enjoying record audiences, thanks largel y to musical s teaming up with television talent shows. Attendances reached. 13.6 million in 2007, up 10 percent on 2006, itself a record year. Total sales were up 18 percent on 2006 to almost £470 million.

One theatre source criticized the Government?s priorities(优先考虑的事)in funding free tickets when pensioners were struggling to buy food and fuel, s aying: “I don?t know why the Government?s wasti ng money on thi s. The Y ong V ic, as The Times reported today, offers excellent performances at cheap prices.”

There was prai se for the Government?s plan from Dominic Cooke of the Royal Court Theatre, who sai d: “I support any move to get young people into theatre, and especially one that aims to do it all over England, not just in London.”

Ninety-five publicly funded theatres could apply for funding under the two-year plan. In return, they will offer free tickets on at least one day each week to 18 to 26-year-olds, first-come, first-served. It is likely to be on Mondays, traditionally a quiet night for the theatre.

Mr. Burnham said: “A young person attending the theatre can find it an exciting experience, and be i nspired

to explore a new world. But sometimes people miss out on it because they fear it?s …not for them?. It?s time to change thi s perception.”

Jeremy Hunt, the Shadow Culture Secretary, sai d: “The real issue is not getting enthusiastic children into the theatre, but improving arts education so that more young people want to go in the first place. For too many children theatres are a no-go area.”

Next time a customer comes to your office, offer him a cup of coffee. And when you?re doi ng your holiday shopping online, make sure you?re ho lding a large glass of iced tea. The physical sensation(感觉)of warmth encourages emotional warmth, while a cold drink in hand prevents you from making unwi se decisi ons—those are the practical lesson being drawn from recent research by psychologi st John A. Bargh.

Psychol ogi sts have known that one person?s percepti on(感知)of another?s “warmth” is a powerful determiner in social relationships. Judging someone to be either “warm” or “cold” i s a primary consideration, even trumping evidence that a “cold” person m ay be more capable. Much of thi s i s rooted in very early childhood experiences, Bargh argues, when babies? conceptual sense of the world around them is shaped by physical sensations, particularly warmth and coldness. Classic studies by Harry Harlow, publis hed in 1958, showed monkeys preferred to stay close to a cl oth “mother” rather than one made of wire, even when the wire “mother” carried a food bottle. Harlow?s work and later studies have led psychologists to stress the need for warm physical contact from caregivers to help young children grow into healthy adults with normal social skills.

Feelings of “warmth” and “coldness” in social judgments appear to be uni versal. Although no worldwide study has been done, Bargh says that describing people as “warm” or “cold” is common to many cultures, and studies have found those perceptions influence judgment in dozens of countries.

To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth, Bargh conducted an experiment which invol ved 41 college students. A research assi stant who was unaware of the study?s hypotheses(假设), handed the students either a hot cup of coffee, or a cold drink, to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form: The drink was then handed back. After that, the students w ere asked to rate the personality of “Person A” based on a particular description. Those who had briefly held the warm drink regarded Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink.

“We are grounded in our physical experiences even when we think abstractly,” says Bargh.

51.Accordi ng to Paragraph 1, a person?s emotion may be affected by ______.

A.adults should develop social skills B.babies need warm physical contact

53.In Bargh?s experiment, the students were asked to ______.

A.evaluate someone?s personality B.write down their hypotheses

C.fill out a personal information form D.hold coffee and col d drink alternatively 54.We can infer from the passage that ______.

A.abstract thinking does not come from physical experiences

B.feelings of warmth and coldness are studied worldwide

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of hi s or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车). They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.

Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地携带)groceries around in baskets they had to carry.

One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheel s. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for hi s customers, and woul d hel p to attract more business.

On J une 4, 1937, Goldman?s first carts were ready for use in hi s market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn?t wait to see them using hi s invention.

But Goldman was di sappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.

After a while, Goldman deci ded to ask customers why they weren?t using hi s carts. “Don?t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied.

But Goldman wasn?t beate n yet. He knew hi s carts woul d be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To thi s end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around hi s market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的)customers.

As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.

Today?s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman?s original model. Perhaps that?s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before

the coming of the shopping cart.

BE PERMITTED/ALLOWED TO DO STH被允许干某事。 COME ACROSS=HAPPEN TO MEET

例:have A. gave B. save C. hat D. made 答案是C

D I read somewhere that we spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing a ll of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the iss ue, let?s take a look at three types of “waits”. The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most anno ying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink (洗碗池) as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it?s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wan ders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of w ait makes the waiter helpless and mindless. A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup requires a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer three minutes, remove from heat, let stand fi ve minutes.” I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After a ll, Forced Waiting requires patience. Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is u nusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen. Turning one?s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optim ists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn?t co me to rely on it, wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody. We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you?rstanding at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you?ll have to eat until a large bag of c ash falls out of the sky, don?t be desperate. You?re probably just as busy as the next guy. C

There can be little doubt that 4 classes can help the gifted children to graduate earlier and take their place in life sooner. However, to take these 5 out of the regular classes may create serious problems. I observed a number of 6 children who were taken out of a special class and placed in a 7 class. In the special class, they showed little ability to use their own judgment, relying 8 on their teachers? directions. In the regular class, having no worry about keeping up, they began to reflect 9 on many problems, some of which were not on the school program. Many are concerned that gifted children become 10 and lose interest in learning. However this 11 is more often from parents and teachers than from students, and some of these 12 simply conclude that special classes should be set up for those who are 13 . Some top students do feel bored in class, but why they 14 so goes far beyond the work they have in school. Studies have shown that to be bored is to be anxious.
