Have you ever thought about why foods taste different? It's really quite amazing. Your tongue and the roof of your mouth are covered with thousands of tiny taste buds (味蕾). When you eat something, the saliva (唾液) in your mouth helps break down your food. This causes the receptor cells located in your taste buds to send messages through sensory nerves to your brain. Your brain then tells you what flavors you are tasting.

Taste buds probably play the most important part in helping you enjoy the many flavors of food. Your taste buds can recognize four basic kinds of tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. The salty/sweet taste buds are located near the front of your tongue; the sour taste buds line the sides of your tongue; and the bitter taste buds are found at the very back of your tongue.

Everyone's taste is different. In fact, your taste will change as you get older. When you were a baby, you had taste buds, not only on your tongue, but on the sides and roof of your mouth. This means you were very sensitive to different foods. As you grew, the taste buds began to disappear from the sides and roof of your mouth, leaving taste buds mostly on your tongue. As you get older, your taste buds will become even less sensitive, so you will be more likely to eat foods that you thought were too strong as a child.

Things like medications (药物治疗), smoking, not getting enough of the right vitamins, injury to the head, brain tumors, chemical exposure, and the effects of radiation can cause taste disorders. Imagine what it would be like if you could not taste anything?

You have traveled to a Caribbean island, to relax on a white sand beach ... Be careful! You are not alone, and they were here first!

Sea turtle? Yes, they are! In fact they have been coming to this beach for thousands and thousands of years, ever since their creation. Sea turtles don't come simply for enjoyment, as they depend on this beach for their nesting grounds. They return here again and again to lay their eggs. If the sea turtles' nesting beaches are harmed, polluted, or destroyed, thousands of sea turtles will stop hatching (孵化), ending their life cycle and forcing sea turtles closer into dying out.

Before you travel to a Caribbean island, your knowledge and concern are very important to the future of sea turtles. Here are some guidelines

for travelers to the Caribbean when you visit beaches used by turtles for nesting.

◎ Don't leave trash behind! Plastic bags are often mistaken for jellyfish (水母) and eaten by turtles and can kill them.

◎ Don't allow dogs on the beach. They smell out the nests, dig them up, destroy the eggs and kill the young.

◎ Campfires may "bake" the nests below, and discourage a mother from coming ashore.

◎ Don't use beach umbrellas. All too often, the pole is driven right through the nests below. Armchair umbrellas are recommended.

◎ Always turn off outdoor lights on all beachfront houses.

◎ Don't walk on the beach with a flashlight or shine one in its face. Flash photography frightens females and causes them to stop nesting.

◎ If you come upon a female, leave her alone! Don't touch her! Stay out of view.

◎ Don't drive out on the beach. You can destroy the entire turtle nests! (283词)

There are so many things to hear, and so many new instruments, like iPods and headphones, which can harm your hearing infused improperly. Keeping the volume(音量) to a reasonable level on an iPod or other portable listening instruments is one of the most important ways to protect your hearing. Another great way to keep your hearing protected is to avoid loud noises whenever possible. There are many loud noises from power tools to machinery, and it is important to avoid these noises as often as possible. Over seven years ago when I first started rock climbing I was frustrated (挫败的). I thought I would be a natural for climbing. I was always an athlete and naturally good at sports. So, I didn't understand why I was so bad at rock climbing.

I went to the rock gym and climbed all the time, and everyone kept telling me "Just climb more and you'll get better." Well, however, nothing I did was working. It felt like the harder I worked at it, the less progress I was actually making. After a while, I even started hating any climber who was stronger and better than me — especially the climbers who made it look so easy.

After a long time, I started making friends with some of the most experienced climbers around ... professionals (专业人员) and full-timers. In fact, I felt so comfortable with them that one afternoon I just came out and simply asked for help.

There is a saying, "If you want a shortcut to success, find someone who is successful and ask them to show you how to get there." It's true! In just a few short months, I learned far more from these climbing professionals than what I had learned during the previous (之前的) years of struggling on my own. My climbing changed ... my strength, skills, mental toughness, formwork, confidence, everything.

I was no longer the average climber that no one knew. I discovered that climbing like the experts is more about working smarter, not harder (no training 7 days a week). What I discovered is so simple that, looking back now, I realized the biggest thing holding me back from being a better climber and having more fun doing it ... was ME! (291词)

I now have four foreign languages under my belt —in order from the most fluent to the least fluent: French, Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese. I can also communicate at a basic-level Italian.

My love of languages starts from childhood. From as early as pre-kindergarten, I began imitating (模仿) other people's accents. Although my ability to learn languages fast might be partially genetic (遗传的) (as my mother is a speech therapist and has a great ear for sounds and accents), I strongly believe my abilities today come more from my personal efforts and interests.

My eagerness for learning foreign languages started when I was 12 years old in junior high school. We were given the choice of French or Spanish. I picked French. On a class trip to Quebec City, I noticed that I was totally crazy about trying my newly learned French with the local people while my classmates were less interested. This led me to studying French in my junior year of high school, and later, I also studied Chinese in college.

While l've never lived in a Spanish-speaking country, l've reached a level of fluency in Spanish by watching a ton of Spanish TV series. The Portuguese comes from my own personal efforts while traveling in Brazil.

Below I'll list the benefits of learning new languages and my personal tips on how to learn new languages:

Children's development: lt's reported that learning foreign languages improves children's critical thinking skills. Kids studying foreign languages do better in other subjects including mathematics and science.

Finding a job: If an employer needs to fill a position, he /she will be much more likely to pick the person who knows a second language. Foreign language speakers have more advantages to bridge the link between a company and its customers.

Making new fnends: I have met so many friends and nice people around the world, with whom I would not be able to communicate if I couldn't speak foreign languages.

Travel: When visiting other countries, the ability to speak the local language not only makes the trip more convenient, but also much more enriching. (354词)

What's it like to live, work, date and raise children in another country? A British woman living across Europe speaks to us.

Louise Scharff, 41, from Haywards Heath, West Sussex. is an assistant at a health care company. She and her Danish husband, Jakob, who works at the Danish Chamber of Commerce, have twin daughters aged 10 and have lived in Denmark for 15 years.

In Denmark, being a stay-at-home mother simply isn't done. There's a sense that women are equally capable (能干的) and well-educated and shouldn't be put to waste. There's excellent state childcare and most companies are happy to let parents work flexibly (灵活). Sometimes, l'll have a sense of guilt when I speak to my sister-in-law back in Britain who's a full-time mother, but for me there's no point in giving up work because there would be no fellow mothers to go for coffee with.

It's a healthy life. We walk, cycle and run, and at weekends we socialize as a family. Perhaps because many Danes don't get as much time with their kids during the week, it's accepted that we get together with friends in big family groups. It's not like in Britain where parents are dying to get a babysitter on Saturday and have some adult time.

Getting married isn't the big expensive thing as it is in Britain, either. Danes, if they do marry, do so quietly and pay for the ceremony (典礼) themselves as a couple. I find that more honest and admirable.

You do have to warm the Danes up. They're not quick to help you find your way on the street. When you do make friends with them, it's worth it. They are not boring people. Instead, they are capable of finding the fun side of things and make you laugh. (304词)

A. Dull..

B. Lazy.

It is 87 years since Roald Amundsen, on December 14, 1911, stood at the South Pole. He had reached a goal that was the dream of many men. For the first time, human voices broke the silence of the world's southern most point. This brought fame to Amundsen and his men. But in a letter, Amundsen openly said that no man had ever stood at a spot completely opposed (相对的) to his real dream, which for the great Norwegian was the North Pole.

Amundsen was born in 1872 a Borge in southeast Norway. From boyhood days, he wished to be a explorer. He read all the literature he could get on exploration. He spent a great deal of time training his body. However, his mother wished him to study medicine. But at the age of 21, when both his parents had died, Amundsen sold his medical textbooks and announced his goal of becoming a polar explorer.

After several attempts by ship to reach the polar area, Amundsen showed an early interest in planes as a helper to polar research. On May 11, 1926 the tireless explorer left Spitsbergen and went aboard the airship "Norge" (Norway). With him were Lincoln Ellsworth, Italian Umberto Nobile — who had constructed the ship and flew it — and the brilliant pilot Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen. In addition, there were 12 crew members. After a flight of only 16 hours, they were able to drop the Norwegian, American and Italian flags over the Pole. The "Norge" landed at Teller in Alaska on May 14. The crew had covered 5,456 kilometers in 72 hour, were the first men to have flown from Europe to America. The last remaining land on the world map had been filed in. (292词)

Repetition

When you learn a foreign language, repetition can seem boring, but it is the key to your success. Studies show that a great deal of repetition is necessary for you to truly "own" a word. Repetition exercises can be verbal, oral, read or written.

Use Several of Your Senses

You will understand new vocabulary better if you speak the word out loud as you write it down or read it.

Mirrors and Acting

Watch yourself in the mirror occasionally as you speak your foreign language. Practice various postures, and try acting out your feeling, such as angry, happy, or sad. Use the language to truly communicate your feelings so that it has some context.

Make Mistakes Some students are very nervous in foreign language class. You don't want to say anything stupid. However, learning a language almost guarantees that you will make mistakes. You just have to convince yourself that this is OK, and keep trying. ______________________

In your native language, you don't have to listen very well. You only actually hear some of the words being said and your brain fills in the rest. You can't do this when you are first learning a language. You have to train yourself to listen and listening to audio tapes can really help. Study Strategies

Think about how you learn best, and then put those methods to work. Many people benefit from flash cards, word association, memory tricks, or making up sentences using new vocabulary words. Find a "study buddy" that you can meet with to study and discuss the material you're learning. Translation For any modern language, translation is considered a no-no, though occasionally you can't avoid it. Consider the following expression in English: to be in a pickle. If you were to translate this word-for-word into another language, it would be nonsense. Study Frequently Study often for short periods of time. Four half-hour study periods are usually more effective than a two-hour block. Languages cannot be learned at the last minute. They are learned through practice and review.

Happy learning! (342词)

The World Health Organization recently reported that the number of cases of tuberculosis (TB) (肺结核) has been abating since 2006. Also, fewer people are dying from TB. But a study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, says smoking could threaten this progress.

Nearly twenty percent of all people use tobacco, and millions of non-smokers get sick from breathing the smoke. The new study predicts that smoking will produce an additional thirty-four million TB deaths by 2024.

Efforts to control the spread of TB have mainly focused on finding and treating infections. Fewer efforts have been made to understand the causes. Dr Anthony Fauci is the director of the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He said, "Despite our control efforts, we still have more than a million people each year dying from TB and millions of people getting infected; we realize it's still a very important problem. So we have to do the practical thing and we have to do the fundamental(基本的) research things at the same time." Smoking does not cause TB; bacteria cause the infection. But the study says smoking affects the nervous system in a way that makes an inactive case of TB more likely to develop into an active one. Stanton Glantz is the director of the University of California's Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and an author of the new study. He says it shows that TB cannot be controlled unless tobacco use is controlled. He said, "It increases the number of people who will get TB by about seven percent."

The study is described as the first to identify a direct link between tobacco use and rates of TB infection and death. Professor Glantz says the results should guide those creating health policies and TB control efforts. He said, "If you want to control the infectious disease of TB, you have to control the tobacco industry and the tobacco industry's efforts to increase tobacco use, particularly in developing countries where TB is a big problem." (342词)

B. More efforts are needed to find the causes of TB infections.

C. Few efforts have been put into the work of treating TB infections.

D. The practical and the fundamental research cannot be done together at present.

7. It is implied in the passage that __________.

Speeding may be the fastest way to get from Point A to Point B, but it's not a very fuel-saving solution. According to the US Department of Energy (DOE), each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.21 per gallon for gas (at $3.00 per gallon).

Let's take two imaginary drivers, Bill and Bob. They need to go 60 freeway miles from City A to City B. Both cars get 30 miles per gallon if the driver stays at 55 mph, the speed limit. Bill travels at 55, but Bob speeds and does 75 mph — wanting to get there sooner. At 75 mph, it would take Bob about 48 minutes to reach the destination. At 55 mph, it takes Bill about 65 minutes to reach the destination. At 55 mph, Bill used 2 gallons of gasoline. At $2.80/gallon, that's $5.60 to drive the distance. At 75 mph, Bob would use 2.5 gallons of gasoline. At $2.80/gallon, that would be $7.00 to go the same distance.

But it cost Bob $157.00 and he got there after Bill! Why? Bob was ticketed for speeding! $150 is the average speeding fine in the US. What they should have done is carpooled(拼车); saving money, a ticket and gasoline!

Another reason not to speed is that you may live longer. Speeding is a factor in 31 percent of all deadly crashes, killing an average of l,000 Americans every month. Traveling over the speed limit can be especially dangerous in bad weather conditions. Speeding was a factor in 53 percent of fatal crashes that occurred when there was snow on the road and in 60 percent of those that happened on icy roads. But a great difference, sometimes, even a difference of life and death can be made if people bear the following in mind. ... (307词)

Teaching kids history has many important benefits. History provides identity. Studying history improves our decision making ability and judgment. History shows us models of good and responsible citizenship. History also teaches us how to learn from the mistakes of others. History helps us understand change and social development. History provides us with a context, from which we can understand ourselves and others.

But how to study history? Well, it should simply be fun. Rhody Cohon and I are friends and mothers of small children. For years, we have been reading history books out loud to our kids and we both felt that there was something missing. The stories were often increasing, but they weren't instructive and there weren't enough positive moral decisions being made by the characters.

Rhody and I weren't professional writers, but we dreamed about creating a book series that taught kids about important people and moments in American history. We wanted to create a series where the reader would actually live through a historic event, through the eyes of characters. We wanted the books to teach values like perseverance ( 毅力) and determination (决心).

When we finally put our ideas on paper, the BLAST TO THE PAST series of books became a reality. BLAST TO THE PAST is about the third-grade students who time travel. In the first book, LINCOLN'S LEGACY, the kids meet Abraham Lincoln. The twist is that the students arrive at a point in the past just as Abraham Lincoln has decided to give up his dream of freeing the slaves. It is then the students' task to make President Lincoln believe how valuable his work will mean to future generations. Following this format, two other books are now available, DISNEY'S DREAM and BELL'S BREAKTHROUGH with more BLAST books coming out every few months.

No matter how people learn history, Rhody and I hope that this generation of kids will have fun learning history, because when that happens, they will want to learn more. (331词)

For Doug Hansen, there are two reasons to ride a bicycle with seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong. The first is his mother, who survived breast cancer. The second is himself. Hansen, a partner in a construction company, was near death five years ago after an accident in Edmonton. His arms and legs were broken and doctors feared he wouldn't walk again.

After months of treatment, Hansen took up cycling on the advice of his physician. Now he competes in six charity rides a year, including Thursday's LinkPink event organized by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Each LinkPink rider was asked to raise at least $7,500 for breast cancer research. Last year's biking event got donations of about $1.5 million. Trish Bronsch, CEO of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Prairies-N.W.T. Region, strongly believes that this year they will raise more money than that.

Hansen cycled the 60-kilometre route on a six-kilogram bike handmade for him. It was the excitement of a lifetime. "People make Lance Armstrong into one person or another, but riding beside him in real life I learned that he's not different from any of us," Hansen said. Hansen was one of about 50 lucky cycling enthusiasts (爱好者) who got to ride alongside Armstrong and Phil Liggett, a broadcaster and the legendary voice of the Tour de France.

Sixteen-year-old high school student Sean Korpach was the youngest cyclist in the ride. "It was a little intimidating (令人敬畏的) at first. This was my first meeting with Armstrong," said Korpach.

Armstrong, a cancer survivor, regularly takes part in charity rides around the world to raise money for cancer research. He has visited Calgary six times for fundraising events since 2003. Much of his appeal (吸引力) is that he's both a great athlete and an ordinary guy forced to fight a terrible disease. (306词)

6. Who are two of the 50 lucky cycling enthusiasts according to the writer?

A. Lance Armstrong and Doug IJansen.

B. Doug Hansen and Sean Korpach.

C. Sean Korpach and Phil Liggett.

D. LAnCC Armstrong and Phil Liggctt.

Learning about the environment is very important. There are many good books that will help you learn. To get started, ask your school teacher or a librarian for some suggestions. You also can look at some good websites with information about the environment and climate change. Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference.

Driving a car or using electricity is not wrong. We just have to be smart about it. Some people use less energy by carpooling. For example, four people can ride together in one car instead of driving four cars to work. Whenever we use electricity, we put greenhouse gases into the air. By turning off lights, the television, and the computer when they aren't needed, you can help a lot. One of the good ways to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the air is to buy products that don't use too much energy. By conserving energy, we help reduce climate change and make the earth a better place. Some products, like certain cars, are made specially to save energy. These cars can travel longer on a smaller amount of gasoline. They don't pollute as much, either. Products like computers, TVs, and VCRs with the ENERGY STAR? label are made to save energy. Buying products with these labels will help protect the environment. And we can also help the environment if we buy recyclable products instead of non-recyclable ones. Look for the recycle mark — three arrows that make a circle— on the package. Recyclable products are usually made out of things that already have been used. It usually takes less energy to make recycled products than to make new ones. The less energy we use, the better. (297词)

8. How many ways of learning about the environment are mentioned in Paragraph l?

A. 2.

B. 3.

C. 4.

D. 5.

9. It can be concluded that the passage is mainly written for __________.

A. car producers

B. school students

C. parents

D. housewives

10. From the passage, we can learn that __________.

A. just turning off the electric equipment when it isn't needed contributes a lot

B. electricity will cause great trouble to our environment

C. cars using less energy will not put greenhouse gases into the air

D. recyclable products arc marked with the ENERGY STAR?

11. All of following ways to protcct the environment are mentioned EXCEPT __________.

A. carpooling

B. saving water

C. buying recycling products

D. buying products that don't use too much energy

12. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. No pains, no gains.

高中英语阅读理解练习1(共2篇) A Every American family has its own traditions on Thanksgiving Day, and mine is not different. Once the national holiday arrives, my mom rises early to make the meal. She puts a turkey in the oven, chops carrots and bakes pies. I'm sorry to say that the men in the family — my dad, my younger brother and myself — rarely pitch in to help. Our job is to wash the mountain of dirty dishes after the meal is over. Around 2 pm every Thanksgiving Day, family members seat themselves around the kitchen table. Plates of turkey, vegetables, salad, rolls and pies cover it. At this point, we can hardly keep ourselves from drooling (流口水) all over our fancy clothes, but it's not yet time to eat. First, we must bow our heads, close our eyes and say a prayer of thanks aloud to God for giving us everything we have. Under normal circumstances, I would have no problem making a list of things I am thankful for. I grew up in a loving family. My parents, who aren't wealthy, took out loans to help me pay for university. But, the funny thing is, every time I sit down for Thanksgiving dinner and try to say a prayer of thanks, my mind usually goes blank. I think it has something to do with my growling (咕咕叫) stomach and all of that food sitting right there under my nose. Eventually, though, we all finish our short prayers and dig_in. To be sure, the day includes other highlights — visiting with family and watching football. But usually around 6 pm we are all ourselves stuffed like turkeys and thankful to have a nice warm bed to sleep in. 1.The purpose of the text is to__________. A.tell what the family do for Thanksgiving Day B.tell how the family spends Thanksgiving Day C.introduce foods served on Thanksgiving Day D.introduce the American Thanksgiving Day 解析:主旨大意题。作者开门见山点明美国每家每户都有自己的感恩节传统,然后详细描述他们一家人这一天的活动,因此B项“讲述这一家人如何过感恩节”能概括全文大意。 答案:B 2.On Thanksgiving Day the author's family do the following except__________. A.watching a movie B.making visits C.having a big meal D.watching football 解析:细节理解题。文章前四段描述作者一家人准备感恩节大餐,最后一段首句Eventually, though, we all finish our short prayers and dig_in.说明一家人终于开吃了,首先

It was the song of the wolf howling in a distant forest. There were many wolves then. One kind was the North American timber wolf. Wolves are important to the balance of nature because they eat sick and weak animals. In Colorado, people tried to help deer by shooting wolves. 高一英语阅读理解题20套(带答案) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say. "It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity(强度)activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial," said Ulf Ekelund, who led the research. Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable. For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message "sit less and move more and more often". However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time. Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the study. "This study reinforces the important message that getting the least active people to do even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits," he said. (1)Which of the following may Ulf Ekelund suggest elderly people do? A.lying on the sofa reading. B.Doing a little gentle gardening. C.Going out to hike with friends. D.Playing basketball sometimes. (2)What can we know about the research? A.It lasted about 8 years. B.The researchers admitted they used fake data. C.The participants didn't include younger people. D.Some participants died because of doing too much physical activity (3)What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' conclusion? A.Doubtful

Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church. There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US-which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海关)station in this are is closed on Sundays, so be just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later. Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法). Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint. Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said. 1.We learn from the text that Richard Albert is .
