Ⅰ. Material analysis

This section is SectionB,Topic3,Unit2 for Grade 9.The main activity is1a.It mainly tells students how to be a greener person by a conversation between Jane and Michael.Students can learn more ideas about the environmental protection,at the same time,students can consolidate the expressions of giving suggestions and the usages of compound sentences.We can use 1b to check students’listening,then use 1c to consolidate 1a. We can use the pictures in 2 to practise saying something about protecting the envirnment by creating some situations and class activities so that students can write a passage on how to be a greener person after class. In a word,students’listening,spea king,reading and writing will be trained well in this lesson.

Ⅱ. Teaching aims

1.Knowledge aims:

a.Master the key words and useful expressions.

b.Continue to learn the compound sentences and the expressions of giving suggestions.

2.Skill aims:

Master more ways of expressing suggestions,especially master some useful idioms,for example,Easier said than done./Actions speak louder than words.

3.Emotional aims:

Encourage students to form the good habits of the environmental protection.

4.Culture awareness: I mprove students’ awareness of taking an active part in the activities of the environmental protection

1. Key points:

Words and phrases:

action, ought to, shut off, electricity, instead of doing sth.

Sentences:

First, you ought to shut off the electricity when you leave a room.

Second, you’d better walk or ride a bike instead of taking a bus or a taxi if you travel a short distance.

Don’t use plastic bags.

Easier said than done.

Ⅴ. Teaching procedures

Step1 Revision

1.Play a game to revise the compound sentences.Ask students to make sentences,using “and,while,but and or”.(The students who make good sentences will get one or two points for his or her group.)

2.Group work.Go over some knowledge on protecting the environment.For example,show a slide to help students to recall the information about the three Rs,etc.(T:We have collected so many things on Clean-up Day such as soft drink cans, lunch boxes, plastic bottles, batteries, waste paper, paper bags and cups and so on.As we know three Rs are important.Can you help me to sort them?)

Step2 Presentation

1.Present “ought to”=“should”,then get students to master the usage,using some slides.

2.Present the new words”shut off ” and “electricity”by show one picture,while using “ought to”.Then learn “a cloth bag”in the same way.

3.Listen to 1a,and finish 1b.Then read 1a alone and complete the table in 1c.Check the answers together.

Step3 Consolidation

1.Read 1a after the video.Then get the whole class to read it aloud,paying attention to the pronunciation and intonation.

2.Get the students to find the key words and useful expressions,such as “instead of ,a greener person, travel a short distance,etc,especially some idioms: ”Easier said than done.” and ”Actions speak louder than words.” Then ask student s to master them.If necessary,explain to students the usages of them.

3.Get some pairs to act the conversation out in roles.

Step4 Practice

1.Make a situation to help the students to retell the conversation,and try to use the key words and experssions.

2.Group work.Get students to talk about the pictures and say what they do in the pictures to be a greener person.(The students who do better will be praised.)
