According to a new study of injuries in PE classes in American schools, the number of students who were taken to hospitals has increased a lot since 1997. But few injuries were serious. Then why were they treated at emergency rooms (急诊室)? One possible reason: a shortage (短缺) of school nurses.

Amy Garcia agrees about that. She is the director of the National Association of School Nurses. She says national guidelines (指导方针) need one nurse for every 750 healthy students. In fact, she says, the number is one for every 1,100.

Every state is different. Vermont has one nurse for every 275 students. In Utah, which has a

bigger population, each nurse cares for almost 5,000 students.
