阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C、D中,选出最佳选项。

A

February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.

On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with rose petals! This is what you see on Valentine’s Day, a day named after Valentine who was a priest(牧师) in the third century Rome. When the emperor (皇帝) decided that single men could become better soldiers than those with wives, he didn’t allow marriage.

But Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, the emperor sentenced him to death. While in prison, it is said that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed ―From your Valentine‖, an expression that is still in use today. Va lentine died for what he believed in and so he was made a Saint (圣徒), as well as becoming one of history’s most romantic characters.

Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is also popular among Chinese young people. Some students are planning to make Valentine’s c ards for parents, teachers and friends. Others want to hold parties at which they will exchange small gifts and eat heart-shaped cakes. The idea is to have fun and encourage people to share in the spirit of St. Valentine.

What will man be like in the future — in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.

Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity(容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.

Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.

But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and motions similar to our own.

31. The passage mainly tells us that __________.

A. Man’s life will be different in the future

B. Future man will look quite different from us

C. Man is growing taller and uglier as time passes

D. Man’s organs’ functions will change

32. What serves as the evidence that man is changing?

A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had.

B. Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner.

C. Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.

D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.

33. The change in man’s size of the forehead is probably because __________.

A. he makes use of only 20% of the brain’s capacity

B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries

C. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on

D. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time

34. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future?

A. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.

B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.

C. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them.

D. He thinks and feels in a different way.

35. It is implied that __________.

A. human beings will become less attractive in the future

B. body organs will become poorer if they are not used often

C. human beings hope for a change in the future life

D. future life is always predictable

If you have to miss a meal a day, which meal will cause you fewest health problems if you don’t eat it? If you have to make a decision of this type, most people (especially very busy people) will choose to skip breakfast.

Howeve r, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast ( the meal which ―break‖ you ―fast‖ ) to be the most important t meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients (营养) we need to begin our working day with vigor(活力) and stay hopeful with good honor. However, many people skip breakfast or substitute a cup of coffee for a well balanced meal. What happens if we ignore the importance of breakfast?

One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participants included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83. The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast, he or she will work more efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person’s work involves mental(脑力的) activities. The study showed that if school-children eat fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate (集中)on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast is inadequate.

The study also showed that contrary to what people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you want to lose weight, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will likely lose more weight if you decrease your other meals.

36. According to experts, breakfast is the most important meal of the day because _____.

A. a good breakfast breaks you down fast

B. you’ll lose weight quickly if you skip breakfast

C. breakfast provides what a person needs to work

D. after a long night, you’ll feel very hungry

37. The underlined part ―substitute a cup of coffee for a well balanced meal‖(Para. 2) probably means _______.

A. to exchange a cup of coffee for a well balanced meal.

B. To drink a cup of coffee instead of a well balanced meal.

C. To change a cup of coffee into a well balanced meal.

D. To regard a cup of coffee as a well balanced meal.

38. The example of school-children in para.3 shows that _______.

A.school-children will be quick and attentive all day if they eat breakfast

B. a proper breakfast will make mental workers more efficient

C.fruit, eggs, bread and milk are the best breakfast for mental workers

D.school-children who have breakfast are much brighter than those who don’t

39. Which of the following is NOT true according to Para. 4?

A.Some people skip breakfast because they want to be slimmer.

B.Most people who skip breakfast actually eat more for lunch.

C.People put on weight because they eat too much breakfast.

D.Skipping breakfast won’t help people who want to lose weight.

40. The best title of the passage is _______.

A. How to Lose Weight

B. What’s a Healthy Diet

C. Surprising Results of a Study

D. Breakfast – A Meal That Breaks You Fast

Octopuses (章鱼) The mother octopus lays about 50,000 eggs. For about 300 days, she stays with the eggs, cleans them and protects them. She does not leave to feed. However, this animal mom dies as soon as the eggs are hatched (孵化). Crocodiles A crocodile mother puts a lot of time and effort into raising her babies. She starts by building a nest (巢), which she guards for over two months! When the eggs are ready to hatch, the young crocs call out to their mother, who digs them out and helps them hatch. She then carries them in her mouth down to the water, where she will guard them for several more weeks or months until they learn to hunt on their own. Bats Bats become moms by hanging head up in a cave, giving birth. Catching the youngster before it can fall to the ground below, she puts it in a pouch (育儿袋). Bat moms may carry babies with them when feeding for the first few days. As the little bats get bigger and heavier, moms help them hang on the wall of their caves and return often to feed them. It continues for about three weeks, until the babies are grown up and able to fly on their own. Koalas (考拉) The animal mom gives birth after a pregnancy (怀孕期) of only 35 days. The hairless baby climbs into its mother’s pouch and lives there for another five months. When the little koala is between five and eight months old, it leaves the pouch for short periods of time but returns for safety. Once it is too big to return to the pouch, it will climb onto its mother’s back and ride there until it is about 12 months old. 1. Which animal moms die when their babies are born? A. Octopuses. B. Learn about them all in the below. Attire (服装) and Flowers at College of Charleston You fashionista will love this one. During the December ceremony, women wear black dresses and men wear black tuxedos (无尾礼服). During the May ceremony, women wear white dresses and men wear summer tuxedos. It's also been a tradition since the 1930s to carry flowers onto the stage: women carry bouquets of six red roses in a red bow and men wear a single red rose boutonniere (胸花). So classy! Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College This all-women's college tradition was originally held on May Day, but it's now held in April. The purpose was to allow students to essentially leave all their worries behind and just participate in some fun games outdoors. Back in the day, it was said that the winner of the hoop rolling race was the first to be married, and in the 1980s she would be the first to be a CEO. Nowadays, the winner would be the first to achieve her own happiness... that is, after being thrown into Lake Waban by all her classmates. Fabric and Green Grad Recycling Program at the University of New Hampshire You'll absolutely love this tradition. UNH's vendor provides wrinkle-resistant caps and gowns made of recycled plastic bottles. Graduates then have the opportunity to donate their gowns to be cleaned and reused. Graduates are still able to keep their caps and tassels as keepsakes, all while helping to save the environment. 体裁:应用文题材:学校生活主题:大学的疯狂创意传统 【语篇解读】本文主要介绍了三所国外的学校的一些有趣的、新奇的、富有创意的传统。
