II. Introduction

When we do shopping, it is necessary for us to know the functions and potentials of a product before we buy it. So introducing the functions and potentials of a new product is very important in promoting its sale. This unit will deal with the problem.

3. Language Points

1). (Para.2)…I was surprised to find the exhibition hall being packed with both products and visitors.

Analysis: The exhibition hall being packed with…is a complex object(复合宾语) made up of the object(宾语) t he exhibition hall and its complement(宾补) being packed with…

Example: Lily was shocked to find her grandfather lying on the floor, dead.

2). (Para.2) For example, the Chinese filled every inch of space with products and sales people, leaving little or no room for potential customers.

Analyses: Leaving…is a present participle clause used as an adverbial to introduced the accompanying circumstances and consequence.

Example: The speaker spoke rapidly, leaving little or no time for his listeners.

3). (Para.3)…once you have decided to attend a certain tradeshow, you should rent a big space.

Analysis: Once is a conjunction, meaning “in case”.

Example: Once a decision is made, it can’t be changed easily.

4). (Para.3) They will be helpful in pointing out any obvious mistakes you might make as well as any cultural customs that need to be observed.

Analysis:There are two relative clauses in the sentence.

1) You might make, modifying mistakes.

2) That need to be observed, modifying customs.

Example:A teacher is expected to be able to answer any difficult questions students might ask as well as to explain any cultural background that is involved in the text.

5). (Para.4) Cultural differences can be a wild card for Western exhibitors.

Analysis: Wild card means “card that is changeable, that can be played anyway. It’s often out of one’s expectation and unknown”. This sentence implies “If Western exhibitors don’t

know the cultural differences between China and the West, it’ll be very difficult for them

to succeed in doing business in China.

Example: Life beyond the arctic is like a wild card for most people.

4. Important words

1). live. a. broadcasting while being performed活的,现场的,直播的

eg: It is a custom for most Chinese families to watch a live television program on the eve of the Spring Festival.

2). partner. n. a member of a business, a spouse生意伙伴,配偶

eg: The American company is looking for a business partner in China.

3).observe. v. follow closely, abide by遵守,信守,遵循

eg: Both parties are expected to observe the terms of this contract.

4).potential. a. capable of being, but not yet in existence潜在的,潜力的

eg: It is often hard for a company to find its potential problems.

5).ensure. v. make sure or certain, insure确保,保证;担保

eg: Measures have been taken to ensure that the work can be done in the right way.

This letter of introduction will ensure you an interview.

5. Difficult Sentences

此句中的with 是介词短语,起伴随作用.it represents 是定语从句,修饰它前面的名词sales opportunities.
