A

Almost all of us have thought about,or been asked to think about, our future careers. Our answers may differ greatly.Even now your aspirations(志向)may have changed from when you were in primary school.

However,it seems career options aren’t only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers and bankers were some of the most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is in line with a similar survey carried out in the UK in May 2011 by job website https://www.360docs.net/doc/1817614382.html,,in which medicine was the top choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.

Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions.Their prestige(声望)may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are some of the most esteemed members of society, and they make good money.Joining these high-profile(引人注目的)professions is often seen as a sign of upward social mobility.

It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices.Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in.Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators of a successful career.British young men list the UK business tycoon(大亨)Alan Sugar,Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their top role models “for their wealth”,just as Chinese teenagers see being a banker as a good and fun pathway to“wealth”.

However, not every child has the makings of a doctor, lawyer or banker. There are those who see fulfillment(成就感)and happiness in other areas, and many teenagers dare to ink more individuality into their career options. As the Teens’survey discovered,a variety of unconventional jobs—coffee shop owner, gourmet(美食家),waiter at a fast food restaurant—are among teenagers’career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs.

With every choice come responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training. You have to learn to balance optimism and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.

B

;when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again.Everybody knows this, but nobody would think of questioning this fact.Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory,he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor,he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two people, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak,we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that,he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame,or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever;but all of us can,if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means—practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can?Why is this?Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things:they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times and prices, names, songs and stories;so their memory is being exercised all the time.

So if you want a good memory, learn from the poor and humble:practise remembering.

5.The best title for the text is________.

A.How to Have a Good Memory

B.Practice Makes Perfect

C.Remembering Things Effectively

D.Strong Arms and Good Memories

答案:A

6.The author suggests that when someone says he has a good memory,it means________.

A.he exercises it purposely and thus keeps it

B.he gives it enough chances to become strong

C.he is very intelligent

D.he doesn’t think of questioning the fact

When someone says that he has a good memory,he really means that he...

7.If someone complains that his memory is poor,________is to blame.

A.the parent

B.the fate

C.the bad luck

D.he himself

If a friend complains...were weak可知,如果有人抱怨记忆力差,他本人该受责备。

答案:D

8.We can learn the way of________from the poor and humble.

A.having a good memory

B.giving up reading and writing

C.practising remembering

D.forgetting things we have learned from books

答案:A

(2015·浙江,C)If humans were truly at home under the light of the moon and stars,we would go in darkness happily, the midnight world as visible to us as it is to the vast number of nocturnal(夜间活动的) species on this planet.Instead,we are diurnal creatures, with eyes adapted to living in the sun's light. This is a basic evolutionary fact, even though most of us don't think of ourselves as diurnal beings.Yet it's the only way to explain what we've done to the night:We've engineered it to receive us by filling it with light. The benefits of this kind of engineering come with consequences—called light pollution—whose effects scientists are only now beginning to study.Light pollution is largely the result of bad lighting design, which allows artificial light to shine outward and upward into the sky.Ill-designed lighting washes out the darkness of night and completely changes the light levels—and light rhythms—to which many forms of life, including ourselves, have adapted.Wherever human light spills into the natural world, some aspect of life is affected. In most cities the sky looks as though it has been emptied of stars, leaving behind a vacant haze (霾) that mirrors our fear of the dark. We've grown so used to this orange haze that the original glory of an unlit night—dark enough for the planet Venus to throw shadows on Earth—is wholly beyond our experience, beyond memory almost. We've lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further from the truth.Among mammals alone, the number of nocturnal species is astonishing.Light is a powerful biological force, and on many species it acts as a magnet(磁铁).The effect is so powerful that scientists speak of songbirds and seabirds being “captured” by searchlights on la nd or by the light from gas flares on marine oil platforms.Migrating at night, birds tend to collide with brightly lit tall buildings.
