Newspapers are not nearly as popular today as they were in the past. There are not very many people who seriously read a newspaper every day. Most people only read the sports pages, the advice or the gossip columns, the comics, and perhaps the classified advertisements. Most people don't take time to read real news. They attempt to catch the reader's interest with pictures and exciting headlines. These techniques are used on the front page because it is the first thing you see when you pick up the paper. The first page attracts attention and encourages the reader to look through the rest of the paper. This is why editors always look for a good first page story and a headline to make them stop and look. If the headline is horrible enough or frightening enough or wild enough, perhaps they will go on to read the front page anymore. They may read the headlines, but that is all, then they turn to the sports page, or comics, or advertisements.

It seems that people do not want the news from a newspaper anymore. They say they get the news on television now. More people watch television news because it is easier and more interesting than reading a newspaper. What about you? Do you read news from a newspaper? Do you think it is easier to get news from television? Or do you care about news at all? Would you mind if there were no news?

My son was a He went to school by bus every day. He was the first student on in the morning, as we were farthest from school, and the last student off in the evening. I was a teacher myself and it was a comfort to realize the school staff (职员) were all working as hard as I was to provide a safe learning environment.

One day I came home from work and waited for my son to get home for a long time. Then I called the school. “Perhaps he's just a bit late,” said the secretary. “I will call the driver to see if those children are home.” A few minutes later, I answered the phone to hear that the other students were home. Then I called his friends' parents, to see if perhaps he had gotten off at their stop to play. The answers were all “No”.

By that time, it was dark and I was scared. My home was in the mountain areas, and it was said that a wolf had come up somewhere. My husband wasn't at home, so I forced myself to calm down and decided to go out to look for him. I was about to go out when the telephone rang; it was

from the driver. “He's okay,” I heard. “He was asleep on the seats in the back, under a couple of jackets. Since it's dark, can he spend the night with my family?”

I was relieved and agreed. Since my son had a great adventure, the school started giving a copy of the list to the driver, so he could check off the children's names when they got off the bus. I think highly of the school for taking the cautionary (警戒的) step ahead; it is a sign of their concern for students, parents, and staff.

President Obama ranks 15th out of 44 in a poll (投票) of the best and worst Presidents while former President George W. Bush earns a place in the bottom five, according to the Siena College Research Institute's recent survey released Thursday.

Obama won a top ten place in two skill set categories (范畴), communication ability (7th) and ability to compromise (用折中的方法解决争端) (10th), and in two personality trait categories, imagination (6th) and intelligence (8th). Background, described as family, education, and experience, proved his lowest score at 32nd.

This is the 5th time the institute has carried out the survey of US Presidents, which is done a year after a new President takes office (上任). The first survey was done in 1982. “Obviously, there's not great validity to the poll since the Presidents have only been in office for one year,”

says the survey's and statistician Douglas Lonnstrom. “But it's a standard for us to see how they move.”

Presidents always rank around 20th while they are in office, and Obama is no exception. His actions over the next few years will decide if he stays roughly the same like Ronald Reagan — who moved from 16th to 20th, 22nd, 16th again, and finally to 18th this year — or like Bush, who fell from 23rd to 39th.

Franklin D. Roosevelt has held his title as top President since 1982 with the same four following as top five: Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson.

The survey, which ranks Presidents using 20 different factors, shows Jefferson was the most intelligent President, Richard Nixon was the worst at honesty and avoiding serious mistakes, Lincoln had the best overall ability, and Washington was the best leader.

c.Ronald Reagan D.Abraham Lincoln

A.c, d, a, b B.d, a, c, b

C.d, c, b, a D.c, a, d, b

32.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Thomas Jefferson is not among the top five Presidents on the list.

B.George Washington is thought of as the most intelligent President.

C.Richard Nixon has always been among the bottom five Presidents.

D.Franklin D. Roosevelt has always been regarded as the top President.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our tour. This morning, we're going to take you to some points of historical interest in the city. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

If you look out of the window on your right, you'll see the Grange, one of the oldest buildings in the city.It was built for our first mayor 200 years ago, and still has most of the original furniture. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that every Saturday afternoon, you can come and watch them bake bread the way it was done 200 years ago.

On your left is the University Building. This university building is just 125 years old. We'll be stopping in a moment at Bridgeton Castle. This castle was built by Sir Henry Pellat for his young wife. He bought almost all of the building materials from England. Notice the beautiful glass windows. Unfortunately, Sir Henry's young wife became ill and died before the castle was completed. Sir Henry became so unhappy that he left the castle and returned to England. No family members have ever lived there.

A Dog Saved a Boy

On the afternoon of June 21, 2012, a boy named Tony Bailey went to swim with his dog, Jake, in the river near Omaha of Nebra in the US.

The water in the river had become swift because of the heavy rain the day before. After Tony jumped into the river, he found it difficult to swim back. He became scared and shouted for help loudly. Unluckily, there was no one nearby. At the moment of danger, the dog, Jake, jumped into the river and successfully pulled the boy who nearly drowned to the bank.

The boy and his family were so thankful to the brave and clever dog that they rewarded him with a good meal and a big meat bone.

Frederick William Ⅰ,the King of Prussia , could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history . This gift was the Amber Room , which was given this name because several tons of amber were used to make it . The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown colour like honey . The design of the room was in the fancy style popular in those days . It was also a treasure decorated with gold and jewels , which took the country's best artists about ten years to make . In fact , the room was not made to be a gift . It was designed for the palace of Frederick Ⅰ. However, the next King of Prussia , Frederick William Ⅰ,to whom the amber room belonged, decided not to keep it. In 1716 he gave it to Peter the Great. In return , the Czar sent him a troop of his best soldiers. So the Amber Room because part of the Czar's winter palace in St Petersburg.About four metres long, the room served as a small reception hall for important visitors . Later,Catherine Ⅱhad the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburg where she spent her summers. She told her artists to add more details to it .In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted . Almost six hundred candles lit the room ,and its mirrors and pictures shone like gold. Sadly , although the Amber Room was considered one of the wonders of the world , it is now missing . In September 1941, the Nazi army was near St Petersburg . This was a time when the two countries were at war . Before the Nazis could get to the summer palace , the Russians were able to remove some furniture and small art objects from the Amber Room . However , some of the Nazis secretly stole the room itself . In less than two days 100,000 pieces were put inside twenty-seven woooden boxs . There is no doubt that the boxs were then put on a train for Konigsberg, which was at that time a German city on the Baltic Sea . After that, what happened to the Amber Room remains a mystery . Recently , the Russians and Germans have built a new Amber Room at the summer palace . By studying old photos of the former Amber Room , they have made the new one look like the old one .In 2003 it was ready for the people of St Petersburg when they celebrated the 300th birthday of their city . A FACT OR AN OPINION? What is a fact? Is it something that people believe? No. A fact is anything that can be proved. For example, it can be proved that China has more people than any other country in the world. This is a fact. Then what is an opinion? An opinion is what someone believes is true but has not been proved. So an opinion is not good evidence in a trial. For example, it is an opinion if you say “Cats are better pets than dogs”. It may be true, but it is difficult to prove. Some people may not agree with this opinion but they also cannot prove that they are right. In a trial, a judge must decide which eyewit nesses to believe and which not to believe. The judge does not consider what each eyewitness looks like or where that person lives or works. He/she only cares about whether the eyewitness has given true information, which must be facts rather than opinions. This kind of information is called evidence. Unit 2 AN INTERVIEW Pausanias, who was a Greek writer about 2,000 years ago, has come on a magical journey on March 18th 2007 to find out about the present-day Olympic Games. He is now interviewing Li Yan, a volunteer for the 2008 Olympic Games.
