The Way to Success

The Triumph of the Egg is one of Sherwood Anderson’s most enduring works. And a few questions came into my mind at the first sight of the title, such as why could eggs achieve success and who was defeated at the same time? After reading it, I’m impressed by the interesting plots and the deep meaning it reflects.

To some extent, “I”am a witness to father’s failure. After marriage, he becomes ambitious and wants to get up in the world. He begins to start his own business, chicken raising and restaurant business, which both turned out to be a failure. Why father failed all the time although he is ambitious and always makes great efforts to do things. The answer is that he is on the wrong way to success.

First of all, he lacks some basic knowledge about the thing he is doing. When raising chicken, he didn’t build fences to prevent the chickens from going to the wheels. When running a restaurant, he doesn’t know the management skills which a successful business man should have. Secondly, father lacks his own idea of what to do next. Maybe it is because mother puts too much burden on him and gives too many suggestions. Last but not the least, he doesn’t have a right attitude towards what he is doing and all he has is strange and unrealistic ideas, like showing strange collections to customers, which is rather disgusting and horrible.

To sum up, the triumph of the egg is the victory of the egg, even the success of the fate, because father failed to conquer the egg and to change his life. People usually think highly of themselves and do things beyond their abilities. So they failed again and again. Don’t be a man like t he father, although tried hard and ambitious, failed at last.
