Robby was 10 for his first piano lesson in my class. Much as he tried, he 31 even the basic rhythm. However, he dutifully reviewed the pieces that I required.

Over the months he tried and tried while I 32 and encouraged him. At the end of each lesson he?d always say, “My mom?s going to hear me play some day.” 33 it seemed hopeless.

I only knew his mother from a 34 as she waited in her aged car to pick him up. Then one day Robby stopped coming. I was secretly 35 that he stopped

Weeks later I informed the students, including Robby, of the coming recital (独奏). To my 36 , Robby asked me if he could be included. I told him he really did not qualify(够资格)because he had 37 out. He said his mom had been sick and unable to take him to lessons but he was still 38 .

The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis?s Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack?s dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.

“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name ? ”

“Are you sure you want to hear it ? It?s a scary (令人害怕的)story,” warned Jack.

“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn?t have chosen this place!”

“Ok, but don?t say I didn?t warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale.

“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in . In those days, the area looked quite different ---- it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.

“ …You are clearing too much land, ? warned one old man. … The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse(滥用)it. ”

“ … Silly fool,? said Dennis to himself. …If I cle ar more land, I can grow more crops. I?ll become wealthier. He?s just jealous!?”

“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping(渗出)to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”

“What happened ? ” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.

“The land hit back ---- just as the old man warne d, ” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”

“What a stupid story, ” laughed Tom. “Plants can?t …” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted(晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom. Suddenly, they burst out laughing. Some green swamp ivy (常春藤) had covered Tom?s face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.

LONDON - A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake(假冒的) bomb detectors(探测器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn't cared about potentially(潜在的)deadly consequences.

It is believed that James McCormick got about $77.8 million from the sales of his detectors - which were based on a kind of golf ball finder - to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.

McCormick, 57, was convicted(判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London.

"Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people," Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. "you have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt."

The detectors, sold for up to $42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they "lacked any grounding in science" and were of no use.

McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.

"I never had any bad results from customers," he said.

56. Why was McCormick sentenced to prison?

A. He sold bombs.

B. He cheated in business.

C. He made detectors.

D. He caused death of people.

57. According to the judge, what McCormick had done _______.

59. It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick _______.

A. sold the equipment at a low price

B. was well-known in most countries

C. had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text

D. did not think he had committed the crime

Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.

AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation(住宿)and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £169.15 at https://www.360docs.net/doc/365830528.html,. A week later, the same room cost £118.15.

If you can be flexible(灵活的)and want to know dates to avoid—or you?re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as https://www.360docs.net/doc/365830528.html,, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.

STAYAWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.

A great example is the historic O?Neill Flat on Edinburgh?s Royal Mile, available for £420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.

GET ON A BIKE London?s …Boris bikes? have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmes that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.
