Tales

The Wise Old Man

There was once a widower who had two bright, young daughters who were so curious about everything that they kept asking questions. Questions, questions, questions. And though their father was able to answer some of their questions, there were many that he just couldn’t answer. And he began to feel that they needed someone who could. So he decided to send them to live with the wise old man who lived on the hill, which was what they did in those days.

So off went the two girls to live with the wise old man who lived on the hill. And they continued to ask questions. Questions, questions, questions. But unlike their father, the wise old man always had an answer. He could answer every single question they asked.

At first, this was delightful. But as time went by, the girls began to find it a little irritating that, no matter what they asked, the old man always had an answer. And as time went by some more, they began to find it very irritating. So they began to search for ways to catch him out.

One day, the elder sister ran up to her younger sister with a beautiful, bright blue butterfly in her hands. I’ve got this great idea, she said. I’ve just found this butterfly, and I thought I’d hide it in my hands and go and ask the old man whether it’s alive or dead. If he says it’s dead, I’ll open my hands and let it fly out. If he says it’s alive, I’ll give a quick, hard squeeze and open my hands and say: Wrong, it’s dead! So whatever he says, he can’t win. “Brilliant!” said her sister, and off they went to find the wise old man.

Eventually they found him, sitting on a rock under a big tree. The girls rushed up. “Oh wise old man,” said the sister with the butterfly, “I’ve got this butterfly in my hands, and I want you to tell me if it’s alive or dead.”

The wise old man looked at the two sisters for a moment and thought. Then he smiled. “My dears,” he said, “the butterfly is in your hands.”

Essay

Three Passions

——by Bertrand Russell: Autobiography Three passions, simple but overwhelming strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course ,over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy----ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness-----that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it,

finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what---at last---I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I can’t, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

Address

Abridged Edition of Bush’s Farewell Address Fellow citizens: For eight years, it has been my honor to serve as your President. The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence — a time set apart. Tonight, with a thankful heart, I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts on the journey that we have traveled together, and the future of our nation.

Five days from now, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy. In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a successor chosen by you, the American people. Standing on the steps of the Capitol will be a man whose history reflects the enduring promise of our land. This is a moment of hope and pride for our whole nation. And I join all Americans in offering best wishes to president-elect Obama, his wife Michelle, and their two beautiful girls.

Over the past seven years, a new Department of Homeland Security has been created. The military, the intelligence community, and the FBI have been transformed. Our nation is equipped with new tools to monitor the terrorists’ movements, freeze their finances, and break up their plots. And with strong allies at our side, we have taken the fight to the terrorists and those who support them.

For eight years, we’ve also strived to expand opportunity and hope here at home. Across our country, students are rising to meet higher standards in public schools. A new Medicare prescription drug benefit is bringing peace of mind to seniors and the disabled. Every taxpayer pays lower income taxes. The addicted and suffering are finding new hope through faith-based programs. Vulnerable human life is better protected. Funding for our veterans has nearly doubled. America’s air and water and lands are measurably cleaner. And the federal bench includes wise new members like Justice Sam Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts.

President Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” As I leave the house he occupied two centuries ago, I share that optimism. America is a young country, full of vitality, constantly growing and renewing itself. And even in the toughest times, we lift our eyes to the broad horizon ahead.

I have confidence in the promise of America because I know the character of our people. This is a nation that inspires immigrants to risk everything for the dream of freedom. This is a nation where citizens show calm in times of danger, and compassion in the face of suffering. We see examples of America’s character all around us. And Laura and I have invited some of them to join us in the White House this evening.

News Report

News Item 1:Spy Charges Unproven: Clinton

WASHINTON: President Bill Clinton has resisted pressure to condemn the mainland for allegedly stealing US nuclear secrets and doggedly defended his administration’s policy of engagement.

In his first press conference in nearly a year, Mr. Clinton said the allegations against the Chinese, which Beijing has vehemently denied, remained unproven.

Mr. Clinton said, “It is may understanding that the investigation has not yet determined for sure that espionage occurred.”

Though he described US-China relations as “inherently frustrating”, he made a strong case for their development and said he was looking forward to the visit next month of Premier Zhu Rongji.

He said, “I believe the course I have followed with China is the one that’s best for America, disagreeing where we have serious disagreements, pursuing our common interests where I thought it was in the interest of the United States.”

The president also dismissed allegations that he suppressed information about the reported theft to shore up his own political fortunes.

He said, “I can say categorically that it never crossed my mind that I should not disclose some inquiry being undertaken by the US government for reasons of commercial of other gain. That is not true.”

When asked if any further spying had occurred at US nuclear laboratories since he took office in January 1993, Mr. Clinton replied: “No one has reported to me that they suspect such a thing has occurred.”

News Item 2

South Korea has announced plans for new military exercises on an island near the coast of North Korea. Military officials say the exercises will take place some time between Saturday and Tuesday. They said troops will fire weapons during the exercise just as they did when a North Korean artillery attacked the island last month. Two soldiers and two civilians were killed when North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong Island on November 23rd. That day, South Korea was firing in the direction from the North Korean mainland into waters claimed by both countries. Also Thursday, American official Bill Richardson left China on the trip to Pyongyang. Governor Richardson told reporters he hopes to ease tensions resulting from the shelling of Yeonpyeong.

News Item 3

China's official Xinhua news agency says twenty seven fishermen are missing after their boat sank it the South China Sea. The boat called the Phu Tan reportedly was registered in Vietnam. Officials told the news agency it sank near the southern Chinese province of Hainan because of strong winds. The Chinese official told Xinhua that a rescue boat was sent to the area. However, rescue efforts were slowed because of wind speeds of up to ninety kilometers an hour.

Poem

On a Quiet Night

In front of my bed the moonlight was so bright.

For a while I thought it was frost on the ground.

Looking up, I gazed at the silvery moon,

Looking down, I thought of my hometown.

When I Am Dead

——by Christina Rossetti When I am dead, my dearest,

Sing no sad songs for me;

Plant thou no roses at my head,

Nor shady cypress tree:

Be the green grass above me

With showers and dewdrops wet,

And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,

I shall not feel the rain;

I shall not hear the nightgale

Sing on as if in pain;

And dreaming through the twilight

That doth not rise nor set,

Haply I may remember,

And haply may forget.

不要为我唱哀歌;

我将不再感到风雨;
