Aim of University Education
In contemporary society, the aim of university education has sparked a spirited debate. Some people hold the view that helping graduates in achieving better jobs is the primary aim, while others believe there are much wider advantages both individually and socially. I agree with the latter.
It is evidently reasonable for some to believe that aid in recruitment is the goal of education. For one thing, there is ample evidence suggesting that educational background is positively correlated with salary of the first job of graduates. Thus, there is no doubt that university education contributes to better jobs. In the second place, professional competence is acquired in universities. Specifically, universities provide courses for students accordingly, both practically and theoretically. Additionally, academic certificate is a proof of individual abilities, which is objectively acknowledged by employers.
By contrast, some others may claim that wider advantages should be taken into consideration. First, for individuals, there are much more than technical skills that is to be acquired. These qualities benefit for life, especially values, professional ethics and concerns for the society. Besides, education is fundamental to the nation, as is exemplified by the practice of setting it as basic national policy. Finally, a widespread improvement in education promotes the quality of citizens, and consequently leads to the progress of society.
As far as I am concerned, undoubtedly university education benefit graduates’ employment in many respects. Nevertheless, a wider range of benefits should be considered. Individually, students should not be limited in momentary interests, but cultivation of personality and aspiration of contributing to society. From the perspective of universities, along with the industrialization of education, universities has become more a producer than a disseminator, which has aroused public concern. Universities are the promoter of knowledge, values and morals, rather than manufacturer of employees. Therefore, the superiority of education is brought into full play.
In conclusion, although the positive effect that university education has on better job recruitment is proved, there is a more profound connotation in education. Therefore, universities shall shoulder more responsibilities, as to benefit the citizens and promote the progress of society.
