I wondered if anyone had experienced such an unexpected trip as I had.

The day of my holiday arrived, but I wasn’t looking forward to it. I had little money and had only been able to afford to stay with my Aunt Rosa in Spain. So, I wasn’t really excited as I knew exactly what it was going to be like: lots of noisy cousins, and Aunt Rosa begging me to take her for a ride.

Apparently it had been the airline’s fault, since the flight numbers for Spain and Jamaica were exactly the same! Therefore, with no flight back to London for a week, the airline had no choice but to pay for our stay.

So there I was, lying on the beach, enjoying the music and the marvelous food of Jamaica! As for Aunt Rosa, I suppose she just had to live without me!

Everybody needs blood

Have you ever seen buses on the street for donating blood? Medical workers on board collect blood from volunteers. The blood is then stored up and given to people who have lost a large amount of it due to accidents or diseases.

Blood is one of the most important substances (物质) supporting our lives. But for now, the only way we can get more of it is through donation. And donated blood has its own problems. First of all, certain blood types are extremely rare. Type O negative blood (O-), for example, only exists in 7 percent of people, according to Sunday Times. There are fewer donors and therefore there isn’t enough of this type of blood for everybody who needs it. In addition, donated blood comes from various people, which means that it has to be examined carefully for disease such as hepatitis (肝炎) and HIV to make sure that it’s safe for transfusion.

This is why scientists all over the world have been trying to make blood in labs. And now, someone finally succeeded—Marc Turner at the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service has produced blood fit for transfusion, reported Forbes.

Unlike many other scientists, who have tried to make blood substitutes by mixing up different ingredients together, Turner chose to grow blood directly from human stem cells (干细胞). He developed a special technique to create a chemical environment similar to that in our bone marrow (骨髓). This environment encourages stem cells to develop fully into red blood cell.

According to Turner, his version of artificial blood is unlikely to contain disease viruses or produce side effects. And the best part is that what he managed to produce was type O- blood. Not only is it a rare blood type, it’s also a universal type, which means it can be transfused into any patient.

The new blood is scheduled for human tests in 2016. However, Turner stressed that the new study should not be taken as a signal for people to stop donating blood because it could be another 20 years before the artificial blood can be manufactured on a large scale. “It is one thing to bake a cake and anoth er thing to bake a cake 100 times the size,” said Turner. “It’s not just a matter of putting in 100 times the ingredients.”

Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95, on 6 December

2013, according to South African President Jacob Zuma.

His death marks the final chapter in a life that changed South Africa forever. Those 95 years

were remarkable.

At the age of seven, he entered a local school, where he was given the name “Nelson”, after

Admiral Horatio Nelson of the Royal Navy, by a teacher who had difficulty in pronouncing his

African name. That name, Rolihlahla, means “troublemaker”.

In 1927, when Mandela was nine, he decided to become a lawyer, influenced by the cases

that came on his father. In 1942 Mandela entered politics by joining the African National Congress

(ANC), South Africa's major liberation movement and today the country's ruling party. It was

during this time that he and a small group of mainly young members of the ANC got down to a

task transforming the party into a mass movement.

In 1952, he was charged and brought to trial for his role in the campaign of fighting against

Unjust Laws and given a prison sentence. The 1950s turned out to be a time of hardship and

suffering for Mandela--he was banned, arrested and imprisoned.

While in prison, Mandela studied by correspondence with the University of London, earning

a Bachelor of Law degree. He never faced his teachers, but his name was familiar to all the

teachers by means of his writing letters.

After spending 27 years in prison, Mandela became South Africa's first democratically

elected president in 1994. He united a fearful country, bringing together blacks and whites in

harmony, when South Africa was living through violent and troubled times. After serving a

five-year term as president of the country, he retired from public life, though not from the public

eye.

He is the greatest son of the nation and a great father of his people. More than l,115 awards

and honors, even the Nobel Peace Prize had been on him. More than 85 streets, roads, avenues,

bridges, highways had been named after Mandela.
