Since its first total penetration into the American home in the 1950s, television has become one of the necessities in Americans’ daily life. People from all walks of life and of different ages are watching television programs. The popularity of tubes has already influenced the American s’lifestyles to a large extent, moreover, the habits of watching television have modified the collective behaviors of post-1955 generations of America. Television is thus becoming the invisible instructor of its viewers’ behaviors.

First of all, the habits developed while watching TV have undoubtedly great influence on people’s behaviors. It is the casualness and restlessness to which people are so accustomed while watching TV at home that leads to the common phenomenon of students’entering and leaving classrooms at will. Apart from this, televiewing causes people to duplicate in other areas of their lives as well. A good case to the point is that we tend to imitate the plots on the screen. Think about the dramatic and grandiloquent proposal in real life, you will by no means be strange to those scenes----Yes, you’ve definitely seen them on TV dramas.

Secondly, the TV content has left distinct cultural marks on the viewers’beliefs, expectations and perceptions of the world. Considering the mirror effect of television, it is quite understandable why television programs can always find their way to gain their devoted fans in different historical stages. While The Brady Bunch illustrated a trend toward showing nontraditional families and households, The Desperate Housewives displays the worries and anxieties of American housewives in the 21st century, as well as the contemporary marriage situations in American society. Thus, the viewers are very likely to equate the plots on the screen with their own life experiences and act according to the leading roles in the television.

To summarize televisions’ effects on instructing people’s behaviors, it is better to say that it is the enculturation when both children and adults absorb the culture of their particular living environment that influences their behaviors.

From the above, we can draw the conclusion that television is both ubiquitous in our life and invisible in instructing our behaviors.

American companies have a track record in effectively operating in complex and diverse regulatory environments and take pride in such leadership roles. Over the last 18 months, the Indonesian parliament has enacted several laws that impact how companies’ environmental performance shall be characterized, monitored and managed by regulatory bodies at the national, provincial and municipal levels. These laws, although good in their intent, raise a number of questions regarding their interpretation and implementation. The passing of Law 32/2009 (Environmental Protection and Management) and Law 18/2008 (Municipal Waste Management Act) brings about a number of implementing regulations, which are expected to provide guidance and clarity. This Clarification Brief/Working Paper (CB/WP) seeks clarification on the timing and format of consultation related to implementing regulations for Laws 32/2009 and 18/2008. More importantly, this CB/WP suggests clarification points to be inserted into such consultations, so key stakeholders engage in fruitful discussions that contribute to a greater understanding of and compliance with the law. Since AmCham represents a broad scope of industry sectors, the organization looks forward to the opportunity for engagement to ensure stakeholder concerns are considered. Objective In an effort to find a balance between environmental and social responsibility, economic development and operational efficiency, and under the provisions set forth by Law 32/2009 and Law 18/2008, AmCham seeks to work with the Indonesian government and other key stakeholders to develop a set of implementing regulations that support the intent of these laws within proposed guiding principles and objectives. Ultimately, AmCham seeks to contribute to regulations that promote clarity, transparency, consistency, efficiency and competitiveness.
