Martha Graham, born in 1894, was one of the most famous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.

Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on.So Martha's parents didn't approve of her desire to dance at the beginning.Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St.Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to

improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing.

In 1936, Graham made her defining work, “Chronicle”,which signaled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner.Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.

Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy.Once again, she was met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn't give up.Her last completed ballet was 1990's Maple Leaf Rag.“A Dancer's World” is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.

Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in nineteen seventy-six.She was the first dancer to receive the country's highest civilian honor. She died in 1991 at the age of ninety-six.In 1998, Time magazine listed her as the “Dancer of the Century” and as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.

24. Some famous artists mentioned in Paragraph 1 show Martha Graham________.

A.was influenced greatly by them

B.kept in touch with them regularly

C.had a great effect on modern dance

D.liked to make more friends with them

25. Why didn't Martha's parents approve of her desire to dance at first?

A.She was too old to learn American dance.

B.American dance was seen as a lower art form.

C.There was no academic school to teach dancing.

D.Her family was too poor to afford her tuition.

26 When Martha Graham continued to dance in her 70s, she________.

A.was warmly welcomed by the youth

B.achieved huge success once again

C.received many awards for her age

D.was attacked by people

27. The text is mainly about________.

A.the background of modern dance in America

B.the development of modern dance in America

C.Martha Graham and her achievements in dance

D.the awards Martha Graham won in her life

Two of the hardest things to accomplish in this world are to acquire wealth by honest effort and, having gained it, to learn how to use it properly. Recently I walked into the locker room of a rather well known golf club after finishing a round. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a half-dozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more than was good for them. These same men can be found there day after day, and, strangely enough, each one of these men had been a man of affairs and wealth, successful in business and respected in the community if material prosperity were the chief necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy.Yet, it seemed to me, something very important was missing, else—there would not have been the constant effort to escape the realities of life through scotch and soda. They knew, each one of them, that their productivity had ceased(停止).When a fruit tree ceases to bear its fruit, it is dying. And it is even so with man.

What is the answer to a long and happy existence in this world of ours? I think I found it long ago in a passage from the book of Genesis which caught my eye while I was looking through my Bible. The words were few, but they became memorably impressed on my mind.“In__the__sweat__of__the__face__shall__you__eat__the__bread.”

To me, that has been a challenge from my earliest recollections (memories). In fact, the battle of life, of existence, is a challenge to everyone. The immortal words of St. Paul, too, have been and always will be a great inspiration to me. At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.

28. Which of the following is indicated in the first paragraph?

A. Wealth results from honest effort.

B.The men seated at tables in the locker room are lost in the significance of life.

C.For some people, no way can be found to escape the realities of life other than scotch and soda. D.The men acquire wealth by planting fruit trees.

29. The underlined sent ence “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread” means “________”.

A. Bread tastes delicious when sweat pours off your face

B.No pains, no gains

C.Failure is the mother of success

D.Bread comes from the sweat on your face

30. We learn from the passage that the author________.

A.was a wealthy person in the community

B.held a positive attitude towards an active life

C.was fond of associating with celebrities (名人)

D.kept a secret of the reason why he was so impressed

31. What is implied in the passage by the writer?

A.To use wealth properly, eat, drink and be merry.

B.Where there is a will, there is a way.

C.As life is but like a dream, a man is like a fruit tree.

D.If you cease to struggle, you cease to live.

D

We know the famous ones—the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells—but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper (雨刮器)? Shouldn' t we know who they are?

Joan Mclean thinks so.In fact, Mclean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she's developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning “who” invented “what”,however, Mclean also likes her students to learn the answers to the “why” and “how” questions.According to Mclean, “When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”

Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean's statement. “If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper's invention,” said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major.“I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rain storm into something so constructive.” Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer.

So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the

idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights, so she jumped aboard a streetcar.Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn't be a built-in device for cleaning the window.Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas, a lever (操作杆) on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.

Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It's hard to imagine driving without Garrett A.Morgan's traffic light. It's equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine J.Blodgett's innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?

32. By ment ioning “traffic light” and “windshield wiper”,the author indicates that countless inventions are________.

A.beneficial, because their inventors are famous

B.beneficial, though their inventors are less famous

C.not useful, because their inventors are less famous

D.not useful, though their inventors are famous

33. Professor Joan McLean's course aims to________.

A.add color and variety to students' campus life

B.inform students of the windshield wiper' s invention

C.carry out the requirements by Mountain University

D.prepare students to try their own invention

34. Tommy Lee's invention of the unbreakable umbrella was________.

A.not eventually accepted by the umbrella producer

B.inspired by the story behind the windshield wiper

C.due to his dream of being caught in a rainstorm

D.not related to Professor Joan McLean's lectures

35. Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage?

A. How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?

B.How to Design a Built-in Device for Cleaning the Window?

C.Shouldn't We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?

D.Shouldn't We Develop Invention Courses in Universities?

Dear Mr.Green,

I'm very exciting to learn that you will start a magazine together. That sounds great and I definitely agree you on that.

Some of the columns that you mention in the letter are really my cup of tea. “Cultural Express” give us a better understanding of the world. Since people from different part of the world have different values, it's necessary to learn from each another. Apart from that,“Blurt Out” is pretty good for Chinese students to learn English idioms and improving oral English. “Entertainment” is also cool! The popular singers, actors or celebrities are so attractively that you absolutely can't miss this part. Teenagers are to fond of popular things, too.

Well, I can't list more.I really can't wait to read this magazine.

W:What a wonderful experience that will be!I wish I could travel abroad some day.

W:What a wonderful afternoon! This is even better than San Francisco and Salt Lake City.

M:We're lucky to be in New England this time of year.

Text 4

M:Did your mother have a professional career,or did she work at home?

W:Actually, she did both. When we were young, she stayed at https://www.360docs.net/doc/4410576394.html,ter,she went back to school and became a lawyer.

Text 5

M:OK,drop in whenever you like.

W:Yes,I'll do that.Thank you for asking me to dinner. It's a nice dinner party and I've enjoyed your cooking.

M:I'm glad you enjoy yourself.

Text 6

W:Nice dress.How do I look?Be honest.

M:Hmm...you look too dressed up.How about this purple top and these jeans?

W:Well, that top is a little too tight, and those jeans aren't dressy enough. And I don't feel comfortable with that.

W:That sounds about right.

Text 7

W:Are you going to watch the World Series?

M:No.I don't care about that anymore.

W:Why is that?I thought you were a huge baseball fan.

M:I am... but my team isn't in the championship anymore,so I don't have any reason to watch the games.

W:But don't you want to see who wins? You know...as a fan of the game?

M:Look,Judy.I don't really want to talk about this, okay?I'm still upset that we lost, and I don't think I'll be able to move on until this whole thing is over.I actually can't wait for the World Series to end!

W:Oh,I had no idea that you felt that way.Sorry if I made it worse.

M:Yeah,I figured.

W:So,what's the most important thing?

M:Well,I only have twenty-five thousand dollars to spend. That's my upper limit.

W:OK.We can basically forget about sports cars and big SUVs.But those don't really match the other requirements, anyway. Here's the big question:which is more important—looking good or using less gas?

M:Well,I don't have a ton of extra money to spend on gas,so I guess I'll have to go with something a bit more economical.

W:Cool. You don't even need a fancy car, if you ask me.And the good news is that less expensive cars that don't use a lot of gas tend to be really safe.

M:It was dark, but I'm sure I didn't see any weapons. He did push her down to the ground, though. She screamed, and the man ran away.

W:Did you see what he was wearing?

M:He had a black baseball hat on.He was wearing blue jeans and white shoes.

W:Do you remember how tall he was? What about his build?

M:He seemed kind of normal,I suppose...

W:Could you be more specific,Mr.Parker?

Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc. 2015年高考全国卷2英语试题及答案解析(word精校版)

2015年高考全国卷2英语试题及答案(word精校版) 含详细解析 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)略 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 21. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A.He got an older model than he had expected. B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C.He could have bought it at a lower price. D.He failed to find any movie shows on it. 22. Which of the following an best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1? A.ended all their programs
