Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points)
Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete
statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best
choice and then mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWEAR SHEET.
Passage One
Our environment is getting worse and worse with the increase of the world population, which
affects the environment in two ways. Firstly, the limited energy resources will be used up much
faster. Secondly, the increasing population creates more pollution, another severe problem that
needs to be solved. Both problems are long-term ones because actions taken now show their
results slowly over many years. They are also urgent because delays in action can lead to great
suffering and social problems. The question seems to be difficult to handle for most people.
However, a person can be a protector of environment in everyday life if he takes actions to save
the environment right now. With the development of technology, cars make transportation easier
and quicker than before, but we can’t ignore the disadvantages brought to us by more and more
cars in use. For example, we are consuming gasoline(汽油), which is a non-renewable(无法更新
的)resource, and will soon be gone. Moreover, the exhausted gas from cars pollutes our air, and
our health is therefore threatened by air pollution, which has a big potential effect on our daily life.
So we can consider walking, taking buses, carpooling(合用汽车), instead of driving cars alone.
This seems to be a very slow process that can’t be so effective if it’s taken by a single person. But
when more and more people become aware of the importance and positively take it as their
personal responsibilities, the condition of the air will be improved to a great extent.
41.According to the writer, the main problem to our environment today is .
A. the increase of population
B. the limited energy resources
C. the more serious air pollution
D. the development of technology
42.From the passage,we can know that .
A. effective measures can be taken mainly by the government
B. taking measures now can soon improve the environment
C. immediate measures can cause great suffering and social problems
D. every single person’s action has some effect on environment protection 43.The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is most probably to .
A. complain about people’s slow actions to protect the environment
B. advise people to take actions to protect the environment
C. show himself to be an active environment protector
D. point out the bad effects of technologies on protecting environment 44.The author believes that carpooling .
A. can give help to those without cars
B. can save people money and time
C. can save energy resources and reduce air pollution
D. can promote friendship among drivers
45.The passage is mainly about .
A. energy resources saving
B. environment protection
C. population control
D. air pollution
Passage Two
Ever since humans have lived on the Earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral
speech. When there is a language barrier(语言障碍), communication is achieved through sign
language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists and people unable to hear
or speak have had to use this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very
vivid exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, can not.
Body language expresses ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or
unintentionally. A wink can be a way of indicating that the party is only joking.
A nod signifies
approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic(非语言的)language can be found in Braille(a system of raised
dots read with the fingers), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture
signs also guide, warn, and instruct people.
While language is the most common form of communication, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.
46. Which of the following statements best summarizes this passage?
A. When there is a language barrier, people will find other forms of communication.
B. Everybody uses only one form of communication.
C. Nonlinguistic language is often used by tourists.
D. People use different forms of communication.
47. Which form of communication except oral speech could the blind likely use?
A. Picture signs
B. Body language
C. Braille
D. Signal flags
48. How many forms of communication are mentioned in the passage?
A. 5
B.6
C.7
D.8
49. All the following forms of communication can be used internationally except .
A. body language
B. Braille
C. sign language
D. spelling
50. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Language is one of the forms of communication used by all people.
B. Ideas and thoughts can be expressed by speech only.
C. There are many forms of communication in existence today.
D. Only blind people understand sign languages.
Passage Three
“Pin the Tail on the Donkey” is always fun—when you are watching rather than pinning. It is
comical and somewhat surprising to see how the blindfolded performers act. Instead of going
strait, they always wander off to one side or the other. The greater the distance to the donkey, the
farther they go astray. Have you ever wondered why they are unable to walk straight ahead?
It is a well-known fact that a person will move in a circle when he cannot use his eyes to
control his direction. Pitch-black nights, dense fogs, blinding snowstorms, thick forests—all these
can keep a traveler from seeing where he is going. Then he is unable to move in any fixed
direction, but walks in circles.
One of these stories tells of three travelers who got lost on a snowy night. They left a
woodman’s hut and set out for their home, which was on the other side of a valley about three
miles wide. They started in the proper direction, but without knowing it they soon swerved from
their original path. By the time they should have reached home, they were back at the hut instead.
Undaunted(顽强,不惧怕), they started out once more, with the same result. Four times they set
out on a course straight across the valley. Each time they came back to the very same hut, as
though under some magic spell. Finally the tired travelers gave up and waited at the hut until
daybreak.
Usually a man walking will “watch his step” and “look where he is going”. He needs his
senses, especially his eyes, to guide his steps, he will walk straight only if he
takes a step of the
same length with each foot.
In most people, however, muscle development is not the same in both legs, so that it is
probable that the steps will be uneven. The difference may be so small that no one is aware of it .
But small as it is, it can cause circular movement.
51. The word “comical” in line 2, para.1 can be replaced by________________.
A. funny
B. cosmic
C. tragic
D. frightening
52. According to the passage, who enjoys more fun from the game “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”?
A. The looker-on.
B. The blind-folded performer.
C. The donkey.
D. The traveler.
53. The three travelers started in the proper direction_______________.
A. and reached their respective homes before daybreak
B. but got lost in different places
C. but returned to the same hut where they had started
D. but came back to the same hut on purpose
54. It can be inferred from this passage that a man can walk straight when blinded__________.
A. if he has two strong legs
B. if he wants to
C. if his two legs have developed evenly
D. if the difference between his left and right footsteps is small
55. Probably the best title of this passage would be_______________.
A. Why We Walk in Circles
B. Three Travelers Got Lost on a Snowy Night
C. How to Pin the Tail on the Donkey
D. Three Travelers and the Wood Hut
Passage Four
Although I think the United States generally has an excellent system of transportation, I do
not think it does a good job of transporting people between cities that are only a few hundred
miles apart. A person commuting between Detroit and Chicago or between San Francisco and
Los Angeles, so called Strip Cities, may spend only a relatively short time in the air while
spending several hours getting to and from the airport. This situation makes flying almost as time-
consuming as driving. Moreover, airplanes use a lot of their fuel just getting into the air. They
simply are not fuel-efficient on short trips. High speed trains may be an answer. One fairly new
proposal for such a train is for something called a MAGLEV, meaning a magnetically levitated
train. Maglevs will not actually ride on the tracks but will fly above tracks that are magnetically
activated. This will save wear and tear on the tracks. These trains will be able to go faster than
150 miles per hour. At that speed, conventional trains have trouble staying on the tracks. As you
can see, Maglevs offer exciting possibilities for the future.
56. What is the main topic of the talk?
A. Energy conservation.
B. Transportation of the future.
C. Strip cities.
D. Advantages of air transportation over railroads.
57. What problem faces commuters who travel between Strip Cities?
A. A lack of available flights.
B. Long delays at the airport.
C. Boredom on long flights.
D. Long trips to and from airports.
58. When are airplanes not fuel-efficient?
A. On short trips.
B. On long trips.
C. When flying over cities.
D. When flying at high altitudes.
59. How does a maglev operate?
A. It uses nuclear energy.
B. It rests on a cushion of pressurized air.
C. It flies over magnetically activated tracks.
D. It uses a device similar with engine.
60. According to the speaker, what is one advantage of the maglev?
A. It is more comfortable than a conventional train.
B. It doesn't require very much track maintenance.
C. It doesn't remain in any station very long.
D. It carries more passengers than a conventional train.
