A lesson plan

Unit 4 I’ve tried all means of transportation

P1:Distinguished judges and my dear fellow colleagues: good morning. It’s my great honor to share my lesson plan with you. My topic today is unit 4 I’ve tried all means of transportation from Book 2. I’m going to analyze it from four parts: teaching analysis, teaching objectives, teaching contents and teaching design.

Learner analysis

P2: Teaching design has two parts. The first is learners analysis. My target students are in Grade 1 of the secondary vocational school, majoring in Computer.

P3: For this topic, the students have had some prior knowledge, like: some phrases and adjective words on transportation. In addition, they have been to some places by different means of transportation, the topic is close to their life experience, how they felt on transportation is worth my attention.

Being outgoing, my students are fond of learning in games and activities. Since they major in computer, they get used to having classes with soft wares. So I have this lesson in the electronic classroom(一体化电子教室),using a software named hot potato to create learning tasks.

They have different basics. About 20% do very well in learning English. They can learn English very quickly and are active in class. 60% are OK with it, while the other 20% are a little weak in it, who are negative in class. I divide them into heterogeneous ['h?t?r?'d?in??s] groups of 5. There are active students and negative ones in each group, so that they can help and push each other forwards.

The textbook

P4:The other part of teaching design is course book analysis. This is the 4th unit of Book 2, published by HEP. In order to help the students focus on listening and speaking practice, I rearrange the order of textbook and choose lead-in, listening & survey as the teaching content.

Teaching objectives

P5:Here are the goals of this lesson, including knowledge goals: to master vocabularies & expressions on transportation; ability ones: to understand listening material and report survey on transportation in English; and moral ones: To develop team work spirit and behave well on public transportation.

Key points and difficult points

P6: For this topic, they are expected to describe not only public vehicles they have taken, but also the feelings about them. So this will be the difficult point for me to break.

Learning method & teaching methods

P7-9 During the lesson, I use many ways to push students forward, to encourage them to learn and speak English, such as task-driven method and situational approach.

Teaching procedures

P10:Now let’s come to the lesson. My students will be asked to finish some tasks on computer. And during the whole tasks, they are always guided to communicate with flash, pictures, video and texts.

Step One Ready for class (2’)

P11-13: It takes me 2 minutes to delivery tasks by computer and to explain competition rules before class.

In order to help Ss finish the tasks more efficiently, I use a software—hot potato to create tasks.

Students will be divided into heterogeneity groups (异质分组) of 5 for a competition. This is helpful to arouse students’ interests in participation.

Step Two Lead-in (5’)

P14: This step is designed to arouse their interest and consolidate the prior knowledge. It takes about 5 minutes. I present a picture and asked Ss: I went to work by bike this morning. And you? Then I elicit them to tell me how they go to school every day. This is a good way to review words on transportation and lead to the topic.

P15: This flash (play) was made by Ss of Computer Club in our school. I believe the flash can attract their attention. First, the flash describes what public vehicles he tried and his feelings with his own life experience. It is close to their real lives. Second, pictures, words and voices are integrated in this flash to predict what they will learn in this lesson. The important point is that it is close to their major.

P16 After watching the flash, Ss are asked to answer 4 questions on their computers, which can check whether they understand the flash.

Step Three Listening (13’)

P17: This step is designed to in-put sufficient information and ready for out-put new ones. It takes about 13 minutes. It has three steps.

P18: The first is pre-listening with a game. The students learn more words on transportation by dragging the pictures to match the sentences.

P19-21: The second is while-listening with 3 tasks, which help to be familiar with the listening material.

Since the listening is processed step by step, the students can catch up with me and fulfill the tasks.

P22: The students are fond of learning vocabularies on feeling of transportation in cross word.

P23:The last is post-listening with reading for details. I use this dialogue as a context for the students to read, it’s not difficult for them to find out functional sentences.

Step Four:Speaking practice(20’)

P23: This step is designed to practice the sentence patterns and help them to finish and report the transportation survey in English. It takes about 20 minutes.

During the simulated speaking practice, I set speaking activities for my students, from words to sentences, from sentences to survey.

P24: I ask students to do the pair work with functional sentences and words they’ve learned.

P25: First I present a model. Then students will have a controlled practice, with pictures and words given. This kind of practice is designed for the students who are poor in English. Therefore they can have a fair participation and get ready for the next period. In the less-controlled practice, students will be asked to talk about where they have been with pictures given only.

The tasks are created for different levels of the students. With fewer hints and more productive, they can get closer to the free talk step by step. With sufficient practice, I think, students are ready for out-puts—reporting survey in English.

P26: During this period, students will make a survey among the classmates and report their results in English. They could express their comments on different transportation. They feel satisfied because they could use English to do real–life things. I think the difficult points have been solved as well.

P27: I present them a video to discuss what makes a good passenger. I add some tips in the video, which motivate them to be a civilized person. This procedure also helps to reach the moral goals.

Step Five:Summary (3’)

P28-29: This step is designed to summarize what they have learned in this period and help them learn to evaluate their performance and progress. It takes about 3 minutes.

By finishing the self-check, I hope students can form a habit to be self-responsible to their own study as well as other’s work.

P30: And this is the blackboard design. It’s convenient for students to learn, practice and remember. Another purpose is to present competition result and monitor students’ learning process in time.

Step Six:Homework (2’)

P31: The homework is meaningful as the integration of English and computer. Homework A will encourage the students to think about what the transportation will be like in the future. Homework B is ready for the students to learn for the next period.

Reflection

P32: We had the class in the electronic classroom(一体化电子教室). Information technology was widely used in this lesson, which makes this class quite efficient and interesting. Both the software (hot potato) and the flash are close to their lives and major, so they are willing to participate in class activities; the video can guide them to be a civilized person. Most of the students can take an active part in the activities, and almost all the Ss can experience the excitement of success in learning activities.

I try to build enough scaffolds and create real tasks to motivate the students to be willing to open their mouth. Only when they report their survey confidently did I realize that my teaching goals have been reached.

What’s more, I praise them for each progress in time and guide them to evaluate their performance in class.

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn. Ss are the master in my class. In the future i will try my best to make good use of information technology to make my classes more efficient and interesting.
