At least 60 people have been killed and many more injured in a crush after a New Year Eve fireworks display in Ivory Coast. Officials say most of the victims were aged between 13 and 18. The incident happened near a stadium in the main city Abidjan. Our international development correspondent Mark Doyle who was based in Abidjan for many years has this report.

There was a surge of people near the national football stadium where the fireworks were being let off. Men, women and many children fell. Some were crushed, others suffocated. The battered bodies of survivors were taken to several hospitals, but there are critically injured people among them. Politicians were quickly on the scene of the tragedy offering sympathy and promising to pay the medical bills of the injured. The people of Ivory Coast all want to know why the security forces failed to control the crowds.

Police in Pakistan say five teachers and two health workers have been shot dead by unidentified gunmen. A police chief in Swabi in northwest Pakistan said the staffs were attacked as they drove away from the community center where they worked. The head of the organization running the center told the BBC's News Hour its staff provided health services including vaccinations and education for women. Aleem Maqbool reports from Islamabad.

They just finished work for the day at community center, five teachers all women in their early 20s and two health workers. They were being driven home when gunmen pulled up alongside on a motorbike and sprayed the vehicle with bullets until all seven were dead. No group has yet said they carried out this horrific attack or given any reason why charity workers have been killed in this way. But the head of the group with which they worked suspects that because of the vaccination program the center ran. Two weeks ago, nine people involved in polio immunization in Pakistan were shot dead in different parts of the country. Militants have long denounced the vaccination drive as a western plot.

UN health workers in Pakistan say a record number of children died from measles related causes in 2012. The World Health Organization said just over 300 children died. Malnourishment of infected children contributed to the high death rate, officials said. Pakistani health authorities have started a measles inoculation program in the worst affected areas.

President Obama has urged the House of Representatives to pass without delay a deal approved by the Senate to avert steep tax rises and budget cuts. The house has reconvened for a special Holiday Session, but it's unclear when a vote might take place. The measures were due to come into effect automatically at the start of the New Year and analysts had warned that they could tip America back into recession. The BBC Washington correspondent says the tax and spending measures are only designed to avert the immediate American economic crisis and fall well short of the grand bargain on deficit reduction that President Obama wanted. Egyptian prosecutors have launched an investigation against a well-known television political satirist Bassem Youssef, accusing him of insulting President Mohammed Morsi. In one program, Bassem Youssef portrayed the President as a Pharaoh, calling him Super Morsi for the way he held onto both executive and legislative powers. The case comes amid increasing worries in Egypt about press freedoms under the new constitution which was controversially pushed through by Mr Morsi and his group the Muslim Brotherhood. Shaimaa Khalil reports.

Bassem Youssef rose to fame after the January 25 uprising in 2011 which led to the toppling of the former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarack. His satirical program which started online from his own living room soon reached an audience of millions. In less than two years, Mr. Youssef has become a household name in Egyptian media. In the second season of his program Al Bernameg, Bassem Youssef has sparked more controversy than any other media personality in the country, poking fun at everyone from fellow TV presenters to well-known Muslim scholars and most recently President Mohammed Morsi himself.

The authorities in the Iranian city of Isfahan say air pollution there has reached emergency levels. Schools have been shut and Isfahan's 1.5 million citizens have been advised to leave if it was possible. High air pollution levels are also been recorded in the Iranian capital Tehran. Some analysts say the pollution has been worsened significantly by the low quality of petrol and diesel fuel now being used in Iran as Western sanctions prevent it from importing refined fuel.

In his New Year message, the Pope said other threats included the growing gap between rich and poor, as well as terrorism and crime. Police in India have charged five men with the rape and murder of a woman on a bus in Delhi last month in an attack that sparked a national outcry. They could face the death penalty if convicted. From Delhi, here's our correspondent Sanjoy Majumder.

Formal charges against the five suspects including murder, rape, assault, kidnapping and destruction of evidence have been placed before a magistrate in a court in Delhi in a document running to 1000 pages. It contains testimony taken from the victim before she died. The legal papers will now be transferred to a special fast-track court just launched with a trial expected to begin at the weekend. Hearings will take place every day until the conclusion of the trial, which may only take a few weeks.

The company that owned the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig, Transocean, has agreed to pay 1.4 billion dollars in fines for its part in the United States worst-ever oil spill. An explosion on a rig killed 11 workers and oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico from the seabed for three months following the blast. Steve Kingstone reports from Washington.

The Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico was owned by the British company BP, but it was Transocean that owned and operated the drilling rig which exploded in April 2010. In its settlement with the US Justice Department, the company admits its crew were negligent because they failed to follow up on clear signs that gas was flowing into the supposedly secure well. Transocean has consistently blamed BP, whose technicians were in overall control. But the company has now pleaded guilty to breaching US environmental law and will pay a total of 1.4 billion dollars in criminal and civil penalties.

A car bomb in Iraq targeting Shiite Muslims has killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens more. The blast took place at a bus station in the town of Mussayab, south of Baghdad, as Shiite pilgrims returned home from the holy city of Karbala. Correspondents say that since the fall of Saddam Hussein, Sunni militants have frequently attacked Shiite Muslims during festivals in an apparent attempt to reignite sectarian violence.

The Italian football team AC Milan have walked off the pitch during a friendly match because of racist abuse from the crowd. The Ghanaian international Kevin-Prince Boateng led the walk-off after insults were directed at him 25 minutes into the game against a lower league team Pro Patria. AC Milan's coach said he hoped a signal had been sent that racism would not be tolerated. AC Milan player Rodney Strasser was on the bench watching from the sidelines.

"Boateng called one the outside coach, so dislike, you know, like hoo-hoo, like monkey. They spoke with the referee. Their director say Ok. They are going to talk to him, you know. After few minutes later, they did the same thing with Prince. Prince was angry and we went out, to stop the game and go into our dress room."

Peru has extended the state of emergency it has declared to find the remnants of the Shining Path Rebel Movement. The government said the measure would remain in force for another two months in the regions of Huanuco, San Martin, Ucayal. The state of emergency was first declared in 2011 to allow the army to support the police in its battle against the rebels.

The French actor Gdrard Depardieu has been granted Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin. Last month, Mr. Depardieu announced his intention to renounce his French citizenship over the government's decision to raise the top rate of tax to 75%. Hugh Schofield reports.

In a letter read out on Russian television, Gdrard Depardieu said that yes he had made a formal application for Russian citizenship and yes he was delighted that he'd now been granted thanks to the intervention of President Putin. "I adore your country, your history, your writers", the actor said in the letter. It would all be amusingly eccentric, were it not also extremely serious in its implications for France's international image which may explain why President Hollande held a telephone conversation with the actor on New Year's Day. According to a friend of Mr. Depardieu, the president wanted to know more about the actor's motives. Mr. Depardieu told him that it wasn't the money that was the main issue but he was disgusted by the way France, in his words, spat on initiative and success.

The US State Department has criticized plans by the chairman of the internet giant Google to visit North Korea. Mr. Schmidt is planning to make the trip with the former governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson. The State Department spokeswoman said the two men will be travelling as private citizens and will be carrying no messages from Washington.

The male companion of a female student gang-raped and murdered on a bus in the Indian capital Delhi last month has given a detailed account of the attack that caused outrage across India and beyond. He’s also criticized the police’s response. Five men have been charged with rape and murder. Andrew North sent this report from Delhi.

In the interview, the man tells how they were first tricked into boarding what appeared to be a passenger bus, they even paid a fare. But then the doors were locked and the men on boards started teasing the woman, leading to a fight. She was dragged away and he says he was then knocked unconscious. And for at least an hour, the men then brutally raped and tortured his friend. He confirmed the reports they then tried to run the pair over after throwing them off the bus. When three police vans were called, the man says they wasted time arguing which unit was responsible. And even then they didn’t help the badly injured woman who wa s bleeding profusely from her injures. He says he had to help her into the police van himself.

The United States says it’s begun to deploy troops and patriot missile equipment to Turkey. The Turkish government requested the defense system from NATO last year to protect its border with Syria. In October, five Turkish citizens died when a mortar fired from Syria landed on their home. James Reynolds reports from Istanbul.

The US military’s European command(s) says its personnel and equipment have begun to ar rive at the Incirlik airbase in southern Turkey. That’s a facility run by both Turkey and the United States. Germany and the Netherlands have also agreed to send two batteries of their own. Nato says the patriot missiles will be deployed to protect Turkey’s airspace. The organization insists that the deployment is purely defensive and is not a prelude to creating a no-fly zone over Syria.

Supporters of the Palestinian group Fata have celebrated its 48th anniversary with a rally in the Gaza Strip, the first since the rival Islamist Movement Hamas took power there in 2007. President Mahmud Abbas addressed tens of thousands of followers via a video link from the Fata power base in the west bank town of Ramallah. He said reconciliation between the two factions was essential if a fully-independent Palestinian state was to be realized. 'We should work together in unity. There’s no better way to reach our natio nal goals and achieve victory. Our regards to our brave prisoners, to our people inside the country and the diaspora.' The event was cut short amid jostling in the crowd. Organizers put it down to overcrowding, but some witnesses blamed supporters of rival Fata leaders.

The BBC has learned that the Church of England is to end the moratorium on gay clergy becoming bishops. The move has been denounced by traditionalist evangelicals as divisive. Here’s Robert Piggott.

The bitter dispute about whether the gay-cleric Jeffrey John could take up an appointment as bishop of Reading in 2003 led to a steadily de epening rift in the Church of England. Given the tension surrounding the issue of sexuality, the church’s decision to allow men in civil partnerships to become bishops represents a major concession and one with considerable symbolic significance. The church has already agreed to allow people in civil partnerships to become priests provided they promised that they would remain celibate and repent for active homosexuality in the past. Those conditions are now to be extended to clergies becoming bishops.

Opposition politicians have said they would welcome the return to the ballot box, but government ministers are insisting that Mr Chavez's inauguration can be postponed to a later date. They say that President Chavez is on the route to recovery.

A court in the Indian capita Delhi has ordered five men accused of the gang rape and murder of a woman on a bus last month to appear before it on Monday. The case has sparked widespread anger in India and beyond. From Delhi, here's Andrew North . Prosecutors say they have extensive evidence against the five men charged with the crime that continues to shake India. At a pretrial hearing, they told the court DNA tests show a match between the woman's blood and stains found on the clothes of the five men. Indian media say the bus driver has testified they planned to rape any woman who got on with some of the men posing as passengers to trick people into boarding. Delhi police have rejected allegations by the woman's friend that they were slow taking them to hospital.

Police in southern India say they've arrested seven people suspected of involvement in an illegal kidney transplant ring. The men including some government officials were allegedly arranging for kidneys to be removed from the poor and sold for transplant. Investigators say they paid the donors only a fraction of the money they took from recipients. Trade in human organs is illegal in India but there are widespread concerns that the law is not properly implemented.

In his first live national address since June, president Bashar al-Assad of Syria has again condemned the opposition as foreign terrorists while offering what he described as a political solution to the conflict. President Assad said his initiative to end the violence would involve a national reconciliation conference to write a new constitution. James Reynolds reports from neighbouring Turkey. Bashar al-Assad spoke for almost an hour in front of more than 1000 supporters gathered inside the Damascus opera hall. "We will continue to fight terrorism", President Assad told the audience, which appeared to take great pleasure in each of his words. Mr Assad repeated his assertion that the opposition in Syria was being led by what he called "foreign terrorists" organized by al-Qaeda. He offered to hold talks with an opposition acceptable to him, not with what he called "puppets" created by the west. As he ended his speech, dozens of supporters surged onto the podium to try to embrace him. The president struggled to leave the stage.

The US state department described President Assad's speech as another attempt to cling to power that did nothing to advance the Syrian people's goal of a political transition. The Opposition National Coalition in Syria also dismissed the speech.

A spokesman in Turkey Halid Hoca said President Assad wanted to scupper international efforts led by the United Nations mediator Lakhdar Brahimi towards a negotiated end to the conflict.

"Assad is denying the initiative of Mr Lakhdar Brahimi. He is refusing the political solution. So he is sending a message to international committee that he will not compromise with the international committee to sit with the Syrian opposition and discuss the situation."

A Pakistani soldier has been shot dead during an exchange of fire with Indian troops across the line of control that divides the disputed region of Kashmir. The Indian military said it returned fire after coming under attack from mortars.

Central banks and regulators have for the first time agreed rules on the minimum quantities of cash or saleable assets that banks must hold in an effort to prevent another international financial crisis. Here's our business correspondent Theo Leggett.

The new rules have been drawn up in response to the banking crisis which began in 2007 and led to the collapse of leading international firms such as Bear&Stern and Lehman Brothers. The idea is to ensure that in future banks have enough ready cash and other assets which can easily be sold and turned into cash to enable them to survive an emergency for 30 days without having to call on government support. They form part of a package of reforms being put into place by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision which sets international rules for the industry. Over the next few years, banks will also be required to build up their core financial reserves in an effort to reduce the risk of them overextending themselves by lending too much.

The French actor Gerard Depardieu who's accepted a Russian passport in protest at a proposed wealth tax in France has visited the harsh central Russian region of Mordovia. Mr Depardieu who's angry at the French government's attempts to raise the top rate of tax to 75% will pay just 13% income tax if he lives in Russia for at least 6 months a year. Our Moscow correspondent Daniel Sandford reports.

The day began with overnight television pictures of Gerard Depardieu embracing and then dining with Vladimir Putin and off camera receiving his new passport though apparently not from the president himself. Then after a short flight, the passport was being shown off to a welcoming committee in Mordovia. The small Russian region is best known for the important role it played in Starlin's GULAG system. Gerard Depardieu ate pancakes, was given two kittens, and said everything was very beautiful.

Sepp Blatter, the head of world football's governing body FIFA has condemned the AC Milan player Kevin-Prince Boateng for leaving the pitch after being racially abused by fans. Mr Blatter provoked criticism in 2011 by suggesting that racist incidents in football could be settled with a handshake.

BBC News with Iain Purdon President Obama has named the former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as his choice for America’s new defense secretary. But he may face a battle with Congress to get the nomination confirmed. President Obama also said he was choosing his counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan to lead the CIA. Paul Adams reports from Washington.

Mr. Brennan has worked closely with the president during Mr. Obama’s first term. He’s been a leading figure behi nd the administration’s use of drone strikes against al-Qaeda and its allies--a policy more controversial abroad than it is here. He doesn’t appear to face any serious opposition in Congress. Mr. Hagel is more controversial. He is a decorated Vietnam veteran, but many of his fellow Republicans don’t like him. They believe he’s hostile towards Israel and not strong enough on Iran. If appointed, he'd be responsible for implementing deep cuts in the military’s budget, another reason many Republicans mistrust h im.

A senior Iranian MP says the country’s oil and gas revenues have suffered sharp falls. This report by James Reynolds.

Western oil sanctions are clearly hurting Iran and now a leading Iranian politician has revealed an important statistic. Gholam Reza Kateb, who’s a member of the planning and budget commission of Iran’s parliament, says that oil exports have fallen by around 45% in the last nine months and the country’s economy as a whole is in trouble. In 2012, Iran’s currency, the rial, collapsed and provoked unrest in Tehran. The export of oil has been vital to the Islamic republic. Oil exports have accounted for around half of state revenue. Most flights by Iranian airlines were cancelled during the day as the oil ministry refused to supply them with fuel because of unpaid debts. The government says private Iranian airlines owe the state nearly 150 million dollars. The price of fuel in Iran has soared mainly because of international sanctions.

In one of his strongest public appeals, Pope Benedict has urged the international community to end what he called the endless slaughter in Syria. His comments come a day after the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad laid out terms for a peace plan but dismissed any prospect of dialogue with the rebels. The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called President Assad’s speech disappointing. As our UN correspondent Barbara Plett reports.

The secretary general said Mr. Assad’s recent speech rejected the political transition spelled out in what’s known as the Gen eva communique, an internationally agreed blueprint for change in Syria. It calls for a transitional governing body that includes members of both the government and the opposition and forms the basis of mediation efforts conducted by Mr. Ban’s Syrian envoy Lakhda r Brahimi . But the Syrian president refused peace talks with the armed opposition in a defiant speech just days after Mr. Brahimi visited Damascus.

The Venezuelan attorney-general has said the inauguration could take place at a later date. The opposition says a new election should be called in 30 days if Mr. Chavez is unable to attend the ceremony.

Scientists say the first full chemical analysis of medicine tablets found in an ancient shipwreck suggests that health care in the Roman world was surprisingly sophisticated. Our science reporter Rebecca Morelle has more.

For more than 2,000 years, six grey tablets lay locked away inside a small tin box kept safe from the corrosive seawater all around. The Roman shipwreck they were found on called the Pozzino was first discovered in the 1970s off the west coast of Italy. But it’s only now that the medicine has been fully analyzed. An Italian team of scientists carefully took samples from the fragile material and discovered it was packed full of different ingredients. They found pine resin which has anti-bacterial properties, animal fats and possibly olive oil, known for its use in ancient perfumes and medicinal preparations. They also found zinc compounds. The scientists said the composition of the tablets suggested that they could have been used to treat eye infections.

BBC News with Iain Purdon. Iain Purdon为你播报BBC新闻 The US Secretary of State Chuck Hagel has said the US is rethinking its opposition to arming Syria's rebels. It's the first time a senior American official has openly acknowledged that the administration is considering providing weapons to the rebels, although no decisions have been made. Our state department correspondent Kim Ghattas reports. 美国国防部长哈格尔表示美国正重新考虑对武装叙利亚反对派的反对态度。这是美国高官首次公开承认美国政府正在考虑给反对派提供武器,尽管目前尚未做出决定。 The American Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel said the US administration was considering a range of options including arming the Syrian rebels, but he made clear no decisions had been made. Last year President Barack Obama rejected a proposal by his then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to arm the rebels. But as the fighting drags-on in Syria, the debate about what the US should do has intensified in Washington, and with no appetite here for direct military intervention, many US officials increasingly feel that arming the rebels is now the least worst option. American allies like Qatar and Saudi Arabia are already providing weapons to various groups fighting President Bashar al-Assad's forces. President Obama has arrived in Mexico for talks that are expected to switch the focus of bilateral ties to job creation and trade rather than security issues and the war on drugs. Will Grant reports from Mexico City 奥巴马总统达到墨西哥进行访问,此次访问有望将两国关系的重心转到创造就业和贸易合作上来,而非安全问题和打击毒品。 As Mr. Obama touched down in Mexico City on his first visit since Enrique Pena Nieto took office. He was welcomed off Air Force One by the country's Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade and the US ambassador Antony Wayne as well as other members of the Mexican government military. President Pena Nieto was waiting for his guest at the National Palace for bilateral talks. In some way, Mr. Obama arrives with two separate agendas, one public, in which both sides have been keen to strengthen emphasis on the economy and trade; the other is private which is thought to include difficult questions about security and cross-border crime. 这是Enrique Pena Nieto 上台以来奥巴马总统首次出访墨西哥。走下空军一号专机后,奥巴马总统受到了墨西哥外长Jose Antonio Meade,美国驻墨西哥大使Antony Wayne 以及其他
