Wildfires continued to burn in Washington State and across the Pacific North-west on Wednesday. These fires are part of a large group of fires. There are now 21fires burning in Washington and Oregon, with 100 more fires across the PacificNorthwest. The recent outbreak of fires has caused W ashington’s Commissioner ofPublic Lands, Peter Goldmark to issue a special order. “Unusual fire danger existsand is forecast to continue,” he said in a Commissioner’s Order. “Therefore, outdoor burning, including campfires in fire pits (火坑)and the use of charcoal briquettes(煤砖)is banned on public land.”

The Pacific Northwest is well-known for its rainy and cool climate. But thisyear it has been unusually hot. In Washington State, temperatures over the pastweekend were the highest the region has ever had. The hot weather has resulted ina great number of wildfires. According to a report, there have already been nearly400 wildfires in the region this month compared with 275 in the same month lastyear.

The fires have reached the Olympic National Park in Washington, where alightning strike grew into a wildfire. Known as one of the wettest places in the country, a warm winter and a dry

I come from Ireland. Today I want to talk about the Leaving Certificate Program. It was introduced in 1924 and 91 years later little change has been made tothe program.

How can we expect the students of the 21st century to sit for the same examas generations before us? For two years students have been memorizing quotes,dates and facts all leading up to the exam in the fearful month of June. The LeavingCertificate Program involves students learning a large amount of information and then digesting (消化)the information to get as many points as possible. However, there are some students who due to no fault of their own cannot take the exam.

They cannot simply retake the exam because it is only held once a year in June. Asa result, students face great pressure to succeed in what is undoubtedly the mostimportant exam of their lives.

A single exam can shape the course of a student’s life. This is an other reasonwhy I believe the Leaving Certificate Program does not cater for today’s modern society. I also think it unfair that students are examined academically(学术上地)but not in any other area. We are being told that everyone is unique, and some excel(擅长)at academics while others’talents lie elsewhere.

Comparing our education system with America’s, where continuous assessments are used, there is no doubt that America has a much stronger system inplace. There students are examined on a regular basis, which spreads out the burden of study and lessens the pressure placed on students.

One day I was driving home with a woman. She rolled down the window, fifty feet away from the driveway and spit her gum (口香糖)out of the window. “Couldn’t you just wait five seconds and put your gum where it belongs?” I asked,annoyed.

She was not the only one who was gum-lazy. Consider the following. Everytime I brush chewed gum under my desk, I shake with fright. At Folsom MiddleSchool, whenever I had to walk by the gum wall next to the girls’ locker room, Ifelt totally disgusted. When I was young, I walked outside during my dance showin my ballet shoes, always stepping right on a big and juicy piece of bubble gum. Iwas extremely upset.

The worst part of all these incidents is that a trash can is located near. Butsome people are too lazy to walk towards it.

If you can’t be a responsible gum chewer, don’t chew at all. That’s all I’mgoing to say.

Take Singapore as a good example. The chewing gum ban in Singapore wasplaced in 1992. It bans the import and sale of chewing gum in Singapore, whetherfor the purpose of trade or personal chewing. However, the ban has been partlylifted with some types of gum, such as medical gum, allowable. This comes withthe warning that it is sold only by a druggist, who has to take down the names ofbuyers. Obviously, the Singapore government gets angry at gum stuck in keyholesof mailboxes and on elevator buttons.

Not only is it annoying, but chewing gum can actually do harm to the health. Most gum contains aspartame (阿斯巴甜), a chemical sweetener(增甜剂)that the US government is now deciding whether or not it is a deadly chemical. If it is,it may cause cancer. Other studies suggest that aspartame may cause neurological(神经系统的)disorders. Therefore, aspartame is not allowed to use in the US.

So just say no to chewing gum.
