Brief History
The history of SPE begins within the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME). AIME was founded in 1871 in Pennsylvania, USA, to advance the production of metals, minerals, and energy resources through the application of engineering. In 1913, a standing committee on oil and gas was created within AIME and proved to be the genesis of SPE. The Oil and Gas Committee of AIME soon evolved into the Petroleum Division of AIME as membership grew and as interest among the members was more clearly delineated among the mining, metallurgical, and petroleum specializations. In 1957, the organization was officially founded as SPE, a constituent society of AIME. SPE became a separately incorporated organization in 1985. American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) was founded in 1871 by 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA. Just as when AIME was founded, the goal today is to advance the knowledge of engineering and the arts and sciences involved in the production and use of minerals, metals, materials, and energy resources, while disseminating information about significant developments in these areas of technology. It is composed of five separately incorporated units—the AIME Institute Headquarters and four autonomous member societies: the Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME); the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST); and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Preamble Engineers recognize that the practice of engineering has a vital influence on the quality of life for all people. Engineers should exhibit high standards of competency, honesty, integrity, and impartiality; be fair and equitable; and accept a personal responsibility for adhering to applicable laws, protecting the environment, and safeguarding the public welfare in their professional actions and behavior. These principles govern professional conduct in serving the interests of the public, clients, employers, colleagues, and the profession. The Fundamental Principle The engineer as a professional is dedicated to improving competence, service, fairness, and the exercise of well-founded judgment in the ethical practice of engineering for all who use engineering services, with a fundamental concern for protecting the environment and safeguarding the health, safety, and well-being of the public in the pursuit of this practice. Canons of Professional Conduct 1. Engineers offer services in the areas of their competence and experience, affording full disclosure of their qualifications. 2. Engineers consider the consequences of their work and societal issues pertinent to it and seek to extend public understanding of those relationships. 3. Engineers are honest, truthful, ethical, and fair in presenting information and in making public statements that reflect on professional matters and their professional role. 4. Engineers engage in professional relationships without bias because of race, religion, gender, age, ethnic or national origin, attire, or disability. 5. Engineers act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, disclosing nothing of a proprietary or confidential nature concerning the business affairs or technical processes of any present or former client or employer without the necessary consent. 6. Engineers disclose to affected parties any known or potential conflicts of interest or other circumstances that might influence, or appear to influence, judgment or impair the fairness or quality of their performance. 7. Engineers are responsible for enhancing their professional competence throughout their careers and for encouraging similar actions by their colleagues. 8. Engineers accept responsibility for their actions, seek and acknowledge criticism of their work, offer honest and constructive criticism of the work of others, properly credit the contributions of others, and do not accept credit for work not their own. 9. Engineers, perceiving a consequence of their professional duties to adversely affect the present or future public health and safety, shall formally advise their employers or clients, and, if warranted, consider further disclosure. 10. Engineers seek to adopt technical and economical measures to minimize environmental impact. 11. Engineers participate with other professionals in multidisciplinary teams to create synergy and to add value to their work product. 12. Engineers act in accordance with all applicable laws and the canons of ethics as applicable to the practice of engineering as stated in the laws and regulations governing the practice of engineering in their country, territory, or state, and lend support to others who strive to do likewise.

Society of Petroleum Engineers Member Resource Guide

How To Form a Section Any group of SPE members in a particular geographic area can apply for formation of a new section. The SPE Board of Directors recommends the following procedures: 1. Determine that there are at least 25 SPE members residing in the geographical area to be encompassed by the new section. The SPE board further recommends that the area have at least 50 potential members. 2. Outline the precise geographic area to be included in the proposed section. Normally, such boundaries conform to some official area—counties, parishes, provinces, or countries. If the territory of the proposed new section is in the jurisdiction of an existing section, the new section must obtain a release of this territory from the existing section. 3. Conduct an organizational meeting with all interested members and establish a temporary organization, including temporary officers. SPE will provide a list of members residing in the area. 4. Adopt a name for the proposed section. Many sections adopt a name that designates some geographic unit in the area. 5. Ensure temporary officers and petitioners are SPE members in good standing; otherwise, an SPE member application form and dues monies must be included. After the board approves its formation, a new section will receive stationery and envelopes, a USD 500 grant from SPE, a roster of section members, a section officer roster, and a section charter. All sections can participate in the SPE programs listed below.
Sections
SPE has more than 165 self-governing sections, in which groups of members residing in geographic boundaries annually elect officers and directors. The SPE sections are organized into regions, and each region has representation on the SPE Board of Directors. The SPE Section Operations Manual contains information about the duties of each section officer and includes SPE guidelines, program information, and forms. Visit https://www.360docs.net/doc/565156568.html,/sections for more information.
Meetings, Study Groups, and Continuing Education Courses
Section meetings, often held on a monthly basis, provide regular opportunities for industry professionals to exchange ideas and receive timely information without having to travel extensively. Section-sponsored study groups provide focused discussion on specific technologies. A listing of courses and seminars offered in each area are available from the section’s continuing education chairperson or section program chairperson. Members receive section newsletters containing information on general meetings, study group meetings, and continuing education programs.
Public Awareness and Community Involvement
Many sections hold community relations programs to provide educators, news media, government officials, and other opinion leaders with facts about the petroleum engineering profession and the industry. Many sections also engage students in their communities by participating in career days, giving presentations about the industry, judging science fairs, and facilitating field trips and tours of petroleum operations.
Distinguished Lecturer Program
The Distinguished Lecturer Program, available to sections throughout the world, is one of the most popular SPE-administered programs. Professional Networking Opportunities
SPE encourages members to share information and ideas and discuss topics of interest. Through a variety of opportunities and established networks, members are able to exchange technical and professional knowledge to the benefit of the industry and their professional careers.
Technical Sections
Technical sections are groups of SPE members with a common interest in a specific technology. Technical sections span geographic locations and tend to be more task- than discussion-oriented. These groups meet regularly and use SPE online community software to develop standards and to collaborate on projects. How To Form a Technical Section Any group of SPE members focused on a technology can propose the formation of a technical section. The proposal submitted to SPE should include 1. A mission statement that outlines the purpose and objectives of the group 2. A list naming both the committed leadership and the proposed members of the technical section 3. The proposed bylaws outlining leadership positions, processes for selection of leadership, criteria for membership, and other governance information Proposals are evaluated by the technical directors and the SPE board. Criteria for approval are that the mission of the technical section supports and furthers the SPE mission, the purposes of the group cannot be met by an already existing SPE group, leaders and champions have been identified, sufficient membership is proposed for the group to operate effectively, the bylaws and governance structure are reasonable and functional, and the membership spans section boundaries.
Technical Interest Groups (TIGs)
Technical Interest Groups (TIGs) are electronic communities in which SPE members may exchange technical information and develop networks along specific disciplinary lines, regardless of geographic boundaries. TIGs allow members to participate in online discussions when and how it is convenient for them. All postings to the TIGs are stored in online, searchable archives. A member may join as many TIGs as desired at no extra cost. How To Form a TIG The TIG program is administered under the policies and procedures of the SPE board. A TIG may be formed when 25 members, with the potential for 50, seek to be associated in the study of and sharing of information regarding a particular area of technology that is not covered by an existing TIG. A written request for the formation of a new TIG submitted to the SPE board should include the following: 1. Definition of the scope of the proposed TIG, outlining the need for it and the subject matter to be covered 2. List of names and member numbers for those individuals who would become initial members of the TIG 3. List of names and member numbers of those willing to serve as officers, such as TIG chairperson, program chairperson, membership chairperson, and Internet chairperson (Note: No TIG may be formed unless at least one member volunteers to serve as the TIG chairperson.)
Professional Networks
SPE Professional Networks are groups of SPE members aligned by common professional interests, who come together in an electronic community to share information and ideas, discuss topics of interest, and answer questions posed by other community members. Participation in these networks is limited to SPE members. Petroleum Engineering Educators Network The objective of the Petroleum Engineering Educators Network is to develop a better understanding of the industry’s training needs and how academia can help fill those needs in partnership with the industry, the service sector, governments, and SPE.
