In this section, you will hear two long conversations. Each conversation will be read only once. At the end of each conversation, there will be a one-minute pause. During the pause, read the questions, each with three choices marked A, B and C, and decide which is the best answer. B. The species of animals on the land.

C. The use of the land.

8. What will they probably build?

A. An organic health spa.

B. An animal sanctuary.

C. A restaurant.

W: I don’t really have any expertise in managing. Have you got any idea what we could do with it?[6]

M: Well, when I see fifty square kilometers of land, I think of money.

W: Ha, that’s typical of you.

M: Well, yeah. I think, you know, a hotel will be great here. There’s enough room for it, and as it’s in the middle of this kind of wonderful environment, we could really sell it.

W: Yeah, the land’s got these really lovely environmental features. You’ve got these lovely hills and there’re all these lovely trees, and a little forest down there. Perhaps it would be nicer to do something that’s kind of more sympathetic with the environment,[7] like, um, you could leave it wild and just let the animals roam free, or you could have like a more organized animal sanctuary to get the most out of the features of it.

M: What would we get out of that?

W: It’s do ing something good, and giving something back to the earth, and making sure that these sorts of animal species are left to live in their own environment.

M: Ok. Perhaps not a hotel then, but I think we could think of a commercial use that would fit in more with the environment. What about some kind of health resort, maybe?

W: Well, that’s quite a nice idea. People could go walking in the hills, and they could do nature trails through the forest. We could even have like a little organic garden or provide fo od that’s fresh and healthy. We could have an organic health spa. What do you think? [8]

M: Yeah, that’s a nice idea.[8]

Conversation Two

9. What are the speakers talking about?

A. The role of teenagers in finding out the trend.

B. The material and spiritual need of teenagers.

C. The function of technology to teenagers’ development.

10. Where was the investigation of Microsoft carried out?

A. In street markets in Seattle.

B. In bars in London and Tokyo.

C. In places where new trends might be found.

A. All Teenagers are critical users of technology.

B. Teenagers stimulate the development of technology.

C. The development of technology helps teenagers

grow.

12. Why is IBM’s ThinkPad keyboard designed with lights on

it?

A. Teenagers usually take notes in the dark during lectures.

B. It’s convenient for teenagers to carry around at night.

C. Teenagers with eye problems can’t see the keyboard clearly.

13. What does the man say about collaborative computing?

A. It is more useful than mobile phones

B. It has massive potential for working environments.

C. It is capable of storing huge amounts of data.

14. Why trainers are mentioned?

A. It’s the other role of teenagers.

B. To exemplify that fashion has also been youth-led.

C. Most trainers are teenagers.

15. How does Converse investigate teenagers?

A. Sending them text messages.

B. Exchanging emails with them.

C. Talking to them in person.

M: I think, with technology, it was Microsoft that started it.

W: “It” being the use of teenagers...

M: Yes. Using teenagers to find out what’s in and what isn’t, what the market wants next.[9] Around the year 2000, they started observing these kids to find out what they were doing with technology.

W: And this was an American thing?

M: Well, no, actually they went all over the place observing these kids: from street markets in Seattle to skating rinks in London, bars in Tokyo, anywhere they thought trends might kick off.[10]

W: So the idea was to watch these children, or teenagers, and learn what they wanted to do with their mobile phones, with software...

M: That’s right, because it’s teenagers that really drive technology.[11] Kids have no fear of technology. They experiment and they automatically home in on the new. One thing that became clear is that teenagers want technology they can carry around. Anything bigger than a few inches is out. Th at’s why there was the development of these tiny mobile phones that could be attached to your arm, that type of thing. Text messaging caught on because kids wanted to pass notes to each other during class. The lights that you find on IBM’s ThinkPad keyboar d are there because IBM noticed that kids take notes in the dark during lectures.[12]

W: So all of these things came about because of the needs of kids.

M: That’s right.

W: And what’s coming up on the horizon? Is there any big development that has been l ed by teenagers? M: Well, the next big area is collaborative computing, where you have groups of people working together

online. This is really going to take off in the next few years, because it has massive potential for working environments[13] in the s ense that you may be able to work simultaneously on a project with someone who’s on the other side of the world, moving data around together.

W: So is it just technology with these kids?

M: You mean where teenagers are leading the market?

W: Yes.

M: Not at all. I mean, fashion has been youth-led for years and years, but in particular, trainers.[14] Now, if you want to keep up with the latest style of trainers, who do you ask? You don’t ask anyone over twenty, that’s for sure. And I think it was Converse trainers who used to do lots of their market research on the streets, on the basketball courts of New York, anywhere you find teenagers. They may still do this, I don’t know.

W: And, what, they just talk to these kids?

M: Talk to them, watch what they are wearing, the colors, the style, and maybe bring in a prototype, ask the kids if they’d wear these. If not, why not?[15]

What’s the news about?

A. A coincidence of ten popular names and the movie Twilight.

B. People tend to name their babies after the characters of popular movies.

C. Some popular names in the 1980s have caught on again.

There’s a better-than-random chance that babies born in the United States last year, 2010, were named “Bella” or “Edward.” Those were among the 10 most popular girls’ and boys’ names, respectively, and it was more than a coincidence that they are also lead ing characters in the wildly popular “Twilight” series of young adult novels and films about vampires. Certain ones which were popular in the 1980s, become the rage, then fall from fashion.

B. It finds that antiretroviral drugs can considerably lower the risk of transmitting HIV.

C. It finds an effective way to stop the HIV transmission.

The journal Science has named an AIDS study as its 2011 Breakthrough of the Year. The clinical trial found that antiretroviral drugs can be used to dramatically lower the risk of transmitting HIV. The clinical trial is

known as HPTN 052. It proved that giving the drugs to HIV infected people sooner made them 96 percent less likely to transmit the virus to their uninfected partners. The research team was led by Dr. Myron Cohen. He said while the results were announced in May, preliminary work actually began 20 years ago.

What was the most important reason why Hazare called off his hunger strike according to the news?

A. The public didn’t respond actively.

B. He had got a fever.

C. Some strikers quitted【

In India, anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare has ended his hunger strike to press for a tougher anti-graft law earlier than planned. The strike in Mumbai was to last for three days. But on Wednesday evening, the 74-year-old activist called off his protest a day early. He did not cite a reason. But doctors have warned of a danger to the health of the activist, who has been running a fever. His protest also has seen far thinner crowds compared to his earlier campaigns, prompting commentators to say that the poor public response could be a factor behind his decision.

Why is it that the data gathered on penguins over the years may now be worthless?

A. It is already outdated.

B. Many of the penguins have died for lack of food.

C. Their wearing of flipper bands has affected the

accuracy of the data.

For decades scientists have been following penguins by putting bands around their flippers. This allows individual birds to be identified at a distance. But there have been concerns that flipper bands might be unethical because they harm the birds by slowing them down as they swim. The latest study reported birds fitted with bands died younger, started breeding later in the year, took longer to forage for food and over all raised about 40 percent fewer chicks. There are also concerns that some data gathered on penguins down the years may now be worthless.

What’s said about gardening in Britain?

A. More than half of the British people are engaged in gardening.

B. Government approves people to use public places for gardening.

C. Private gardening in public places often takes place late at night.

Odd things are happening to Brits...we seem to be developing green fingers! The number of people growing their own fruit and vegetables has almost doubled in the past year, according to Gardeners’ World magazine. But not everyone has space for a vegetable patch or a flowerbed. That’s why some people plant flowers or vegetables in public places to make them greener and more pleasing to the eye. Many people would approve of prettifying towns and cities, but guerrilla gardening is not strictly legal. Therefore, this type of gardening often takes place in the dead of night.

[1] On October 31, in many countries children and adults dress up in unusual costumes. Some become witches or ghosts; others dress up as trees, goats, and in other very unusual costumes. October 31 is, of course, Halloween. This festival started in Europe and has spread to all parts of the world. However, not all celebrations spread around the world. Every country has its own singular festivals. Here are two of the more unusual ones.

[2] The first one is Festival of Snakes. Many people are afraid of snakes. In some parts of the world, snakes are regarded as evil or, at least, dangerous. But, there is one small village in Italy where the people seem to worship snakes. They show their respect and love for snakes with a festival. This festival is held each year in the tiny village of Cocullo, which is surrounded by some of Italy’s wildest forests.[21]

[3] Celebrations begin on Saint Joseph’s Day, March 19, when the first snakes of the season are captured and put in cages.[22]Two months later, on the first Thursday in May, villagers set off fireworks and then go to church.[23]After church, the statue of Saint Domenica is carried through the streets, and villagers put the captured snakes around his statue. Then, more fireworks are set off. At the edge of the village, the snakes are set free in the forest,[24] and the villagers believe that they are immune from snakebites for another year.[25] [4] The second festival, La Tomatina, in Bunol, Spain, is very simple.[26] Everyone throws tomatoes at each other on the last Wednesday of August.[27]The town’s streets turn bright red as over 20,000 people hit each other with large, red, soft tomatoes.

[5] There are many ideas on how the festival started. The most likely explanation is that it started as a fight between poor and rich teenagers.[28] No one knows who threw the first tomato, but somehow they began throwing tomatoes at each other.

[6] It soon became a point of honor to meet on the same day in town. Over the years, this local event has become a national event. It is no longer a war between poor and rich and is now an exciting time for young people to have a good time throwing tomatoes at everyone.

[7] This standard uniform is an old T-shirt, old shorts, and safety glasses.[29]Farmers bring thousands of tomatoes from around the countryside, and the festival begins with the firing of a rocket. An hour later, the end of the festival is announced with the firing of another rocket, and everyone begins to clean up the town.[30]

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.

[1] Every year since 1998, Fortune Magazine has published a list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For”. How does the magazine choose the companies? F irstly, it uses a survey. 350 employees answer fifty-seven questions about their company. Secondly, Fortune Magazine looks at important features of companies; for example, pay, benefits, and communication between workers and management.[56] Finally, the magazine compares the results to find its Top 100.

[2] To a certain extent, the results are guesswork, but the companies on the list, by and large, have many things in common: they pay their employees well, they allow workers to make decisions, and they offer a comfortable workplace. Broadly speaking, however, the winners tend to offer something above and beyond the norm. J. M. Smucker, a jam and jelly company, gives its workers free muffins and bagels for breakfast; at Griffin Hospital, employees get free massages; a bank called First Horizon National gives its employees time off to visit their children’s classrooms. Wegmans Food Markets sent one worker on a ten-day trip to

London, Paris and Italy to learn about cheese. This is not unusual for the New York-based company, which is well-known for the scholarships it gives

its employees to further their education. At W. L. Gore, workers decide on their colleagues’ salaries. Surprisingly enough, the most important thing for employees is not money. It is freedom to develop ideas.[57] Timberland offers a six-month paid sabbatical for employees who have “a personal dream that benefits the community”.

[3] Let’s not forget that all these companies are businesses whose priority is making money. They have to make a profit. And do they? Seemingly, the answer is a big “yes”. The number one company on Fortune’s 2005 list, Wegmans, makes a fortune. The company, which has a motto, “Employees first, customers second”, is one of the fifty largest private companies in the US, with annual sales of $3.6 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Apparently, being good to your employees is no obstacle to making money.

[4] How much of Wegmans’ success is due to the company’s policies? “Up to a point, the success is because of the freedom t hey give us,” says one employee. “On the other hand, no company gets rich just by being nice. Wegmans has great marketing strategies and it’s well-positioned within the community.[58]I’ve been here for fifteen years. Looking back, I’d say that the company’s innovations for customers, such as the Shoppers’ Club electronic discount programme in the 90s, have been just as important as the benefits to staff.”

[5] But the employee benefits are striking. Fundamentally, Wegmans believes in professional development. As well as scholarships, the company gives its employees business opportunities.[59]For years, one employee made delicious cookies for her colleagues. Eventually, she started selling the cookies in Wegmans. “I just asked the manager,” she says. “With h indsight, I should have asked earlier. I could have made more money!”

[6] The staff’s freedom to make decisions is another thing you won’t find everywhere.[60]Essentially, Wegmans wants its workers to do almost anything to keep the customers happy. Believe it or not, an employee once cooked a Thanksgiving turkey in the store for a customer because the woman’s turkey, bought in Wegmans, was too big for her oven. One manager says, “We’re a $3 billion company run by sixteen-year-old cashiers.”

[1] Being the founder of the Internet’s largest encyclopaedia means Jimmy Wales gets a lot of bizarre emails. There are correspondents who assume he wrote Wikipedia himself and is therefore an expert on everything—like the guy who foun d some strange chemicals in his late grandfather’s attic and wanted Wales to tell him what to do with them. There are kooks who claim to have found, say, a 9,000-year-old fifteen-foot human skeleton and wonder if Wales would be interested. But the emails that make him laugh out loud come from concerned newcomers who didn’t know even the basic function of Wikipedia and have just discovered they have total freedom to edit a Wikipedia entry at the click of a button. “Oh my God,” they write, “you’ve got a major security flaw.”

[2] Wikipedia is a free open-source encyclopaedia, which basically means that anyone can log on and add to it or edit it. And they do. It has a stunning 1.5 million entries in seventy-six languages—and counting. Academics are upset by what they see as info anarchy. An Encyclopaedia Britanica editor once likened Wikipedia to a public toilet seat because you don’t know who used it last. Loyal users claim that collaboration improves articles over time.

[3] But what exactly is a wiki and how does it work? Wikis are deceptively simple pieces of software that you can download for free. You then use them to set up a website that can be edited by anyone you like. Need to solve a thorny business problem overnight and all the members of your team are in different time zones? Start a wiki.

[4] Wikipedia is the cumulative work of 16,000 people, the bulk of it done by a hard-core group of around 1,000 volunteers. Its 500,000 entries in English alone make it far larger than the Encyclopaedia Britannica. And Wales pays just one employee who keeps the servers ticking. Naturally there are a lot of idiots, vandals and fanatics, who take advantage of Wikipedia’s open system to deface, delete or push one-sided views. Sometimes extreme action has to be taken. For example, Wales locked the entries on John Kerry and George W. Bush for most of the 2004 Presidential election campaign. But for the most part, the geeks have a huge advantage: they care more. According to an MIT study, obscene comments randomly inserted on Wikipedia are removed within 100 seconds, on average. Vandals might as well as be spray-painting walls with disappearing ink.

[5] As for edit wars, in which two geeks with opposing views delete each other’s assertions over and over, well, they’re not much of a problem these days. All kinds of viewpoints co-exist in the same article. Take the entry on Wikipedia: “Wikipedia has been criticized for a perceived lack of reliability, comprehensiveness and authority.” Indeed, Larry Sanger, Wikipedia’s former edit or-in-chief (now a university lecturer), still loves the site but thinks his fellow professionals have a point. “The wide-open nature of the Internet encourages people to disregard the importance of expertise,” he says. Sanger doesn’t let his students use Wikipedia for their papers, partly because he knows they could confirm anything they like by adding it themselves.

[1] People are not generally aware of the popularity of pet ownership. Research shows that pets act as companions and protectors, stress relievers and in some cases help to foster family cohesion. While pets are traditionally associated with family-type households, they are just as important to households without children. In an era when the population is ageing and more people are living alone, pets can provide valuable relief from loneliness.

[2] Urban pet management has been the subject of extensive debate among veterinarians and those involved in local government for some time. Part of the reason is that people complain more readily about other people’s pets than ever before. Emphasis on urba n consolidation has meant that smaller homes and back gardens and multi-dwelling developments not only discourage people from owning pets but also place greater demands on scarce public open space. Pet owners may face tougher restrictions from either their local council or resident management committee. The term “socially responsible pet ownership” has

emerged to describe a set of responsibilities to which pet owners are now expected to adhere.

[3] It might be tempting to prescribe different pets for different types of housing. Some people already have firm views about pets and housing type, mostly in relation to dogs, e.g. that the only environment for a dog is in conventional detached housing or that a “big” dog is only suitable in the country. However, su itability is as much dependent on the quality of space as it is on the quantity. A dwelling that overlooks areas of activity is ideal for pets because it increases the amount of stimulation that can be received from the property, e.g. dwellings that overlook a park or are adjacent to a busy street. This is one way to alleviate boredom and the negative behaviors that sometimes result.

[4] Preferably a dog should have access to some outdoor space. Open space is not essential for a cat provided an enriching environment is maintained indoors, e. g. a bay window or internal fernery.[68] Ideally dogs should have access to all areas of open space on a property. On the whole a dog’s behavior is likely to be better if he or she can see the street.[66] Although the dog may bark at passers-by in the street, there will be less likelihood of excessive barking that might arise through boredom. Providing a dog with surveillance of the street also enhances public security a very positive benefit.

[5] With adequate fencing, a dog will be confined to the property. The standard paling fence will restrain almost all dogs. They are recommended for side and rear boundaries.[67] Furthermore, all gates should be fitted with a return spring self-closing device. Cats are not as easily restrained as dogs as they are more agile and have quite different notions of territoriality. Mostly this does not create a problem, although difficulties may arise in environmentally sensitive areas where cats may prey on wildlife. It is recommended that cats be confined to the house at night for their own protection.

[6] Owning a pet brings with it responsibilities to which we are increasingly being called to adhere. It is hoped that the guidelines will encourage people to think about pets in decisions about residential and community development. If they do, pet ownership will not be prejudiced by the push for urban consolidation.

[1] Our bodies depend on sleep to keep a number of delicately balanced systems running smoothly. Without it these, systems become subtly off-key, which can eventually lead to more serious consequences. Although the odd broken night never hurt anyone, some sleep experts are now saying that even just an hour of missed sleep, night after night, can cause ill health.

[2] Persistent low-level fatigue is extremely common since insomnia may happen to one in three of us. The cause can lie in surrounding factors, such as an uncomfortable mattress or noisy neighbors.[71]Some insomnia is temporarily caused by stress brought on by a forthcoming special event, such as an exam or pressure at work. How you feel can notoriously affect sleep, too. Anxiety, anger or resentment can all stop us from dropping off and one of the prime symptoms of depression is early morning waking.

[3] Sleep apnoea, a common disorder in which lapses in breathing cause a shortage of oxygen which in turn disrupts sleep, may need treating.[72] Shift work, partying until the small hours and jet lag can also disrupt the body’s internal clock that tells us when to stay awake and when to sleep[4] Too much food, tea, coffee, cola or other stimulants can also be culprits. Physical illness such as pain from arthritis can be a factor, too, as can drugs such as those used to treat chronic illnesses like high blood pressure and asthma.

[5] Some of us simply need to make sure that the bedroom is a calm, pleasant place conducive to sleep and avoid daytime naps. And last but not least, anxiously lying awake worrying about not sleeping can cause what the doctors call psycho-physiological insomnia.

[6] Whatever the cause, fatigue can have devastating effects on all aspects of our lives. And new US research offers some clues as to further effects of this disturbance to t he body’s natural rhythms. Perhaps the greatest risk could be the effect on the immune system.[73] The research shows that loss of sleep can slow down the action of cells which are involved in fighting off infection and even protecting us against more serious diseases such as cancer.

[7] What isn’t known, however, is whether one or two broken nights can have a long-term effect. People who suffer from long periods of stress, for example after a bereavement, seem to be more vulnerable to illness, which suggests that lack of sleep may be a factor.

[8] American research also suggests that lack of sleep can make you want to eat too much![74] Nurses on the overnight shift gained more than those on the evening shift, suggesting that the greater the disruption in sleep patterns, the greater the tendency to overeat and thus gain weight.

[9] Lack of sleep may even contribute to or speed up the ageing process.[75] During sleep the body produces

a hormone which is vital for growth and cell renewal. Without enough sleep this rejuvenation time is lost. It comes as no surprise that the period in life when we sleep most—as babies and toddlers—is the period of greatest growth.

The chart below shows secondary education situations in two countries.

Write a report of about 100words describing

the information in the chart, and make comparisons where relevant on the answer sheet.

Secondary Education in Britain and the US

Both of the two countries have private schools and state schools for secondary education. In Britain, the percentage of pupils in private schools is 7% while in the US it is 15%. Thus, state schools are more popular in Britain. When the pupils turn to be 16 years old, 74% of those in Britain choose to leave school and only 9% go on the full-time higher education while the others will finish their education around 17 or 18. But in the US, 54.5% pupils continue the higher education and only 6% drop out school at 16 or 39.5% at 17-18. Moreover, 25% pupils in Britain pass A Level and only 40% pass GCSE. On the contrary, pupils obtaining high school diploma are as high as 75% in the US. Therefore, Americans attach greater importance to higher education than the Britons.

Since we’re now living in a society where a good education is becoming less important for a high income, the government should not encourage people to go to college any more.

Write your essay of about 160 words in an appropriate style on the answer sheet, giving reasons for your answer, and including any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

The Importance of Higher Education

The contemporary society has seen a trend of discordance in education. Many college students graduate only to find that they earn much less than their bosses who even have never entered colleges. However, higher education is still valuable for students.

Most importantly, higher education is the source of expertise. Every industry in the society is built on the professional knowledge. If all the staff is poor-educated, who can we depend on to make profits? Colleges can equip students with the most useful and systematical theories. Further, the academic environment in college will provide students with a better opportunity to develop healthy bodies and hearts. What they need to do is to read more and think more for their own pursuits. Thus, they can be stronger to confront the extreme thoughts that may destroy their righteous beliefs in the future. Lastly, good friends and teachers from colleges will help students form right outlook on life and values, which will also benefit their future career.

In summary, higher education will set students a higher start in the future career. If you can not see it now, wait and see that how the better are separated from the good.
