It was five in the evening and I was cooking dinner when I noticed the house had gotten quiet. I wiped off my hands and thought to myself, “What is Serena up to.”My youngest Serena was a whirlwind, and curious about everything. She was always on the move and a quiet house was not normal for us. When I passed the front door and saw it was partially open, my heart sank, and panic set in. At that moment everything became a blur, one moment I?m cooking dinner and the next, doctors are rushing Serena off to the emergency room.

I felt out of control, we didn?t belong here. I wanted to take Serena home. I bargained, promised, and prayed with god. We waited 2 hours, before two physicians came to the doorway. Rather than spend my senior year taking a lot of elective courses, I intended to get involved in a particular work-study project where I could volunteer my services at the local hospital. My proposal was accepted without complaint by the high school principal, the dean of students, and my parents. It?s the best decision I?ve ever made.

As students, we aren?t always able to understand information in our classes because we hardly ever see it applied in our everyday life. We are taught a new concept one day, and the next day we have no recollection of what the teacher was even talking about. Studies have shown that students become more knowledgeable through visual aids. If the learning process can be greatly improved by seeing concepts in the classroom, imagine the possibilities of absorbing new information by experiencing it in real-life situations. I know how precious that experience can be.

I learned a lesson in faithfulness when I met Tommy, a father who has visited his comatose(昏迷的) daughter in the hospital three times a week for the past 14 years. I came to appreciate my Spanish classes when I invited Antonio, a Hispanic American struggling to settle down here, to the chapel service(礼拜仪式) in the hospital. I came to value the strength of human contact when I held another patient?s hand while a doctor made the examination. I also learned about the importance of choosing a career that I really like, for on many occasions, doctors told me, “Don?t ever become a doctor; it?s not worth all of the stress.”

I have seen time and time again the beneficial results of real-life experience. My high school gave me a firm foundation of education, but it was only through practice that I truly learned. All seniors in this school should be given the opportunities to volunteer at places that interest them. I was given a chance, and every day I reap the rewards of that experience.

A.To promote work-study programs for college students.

B.To call for a reform in the educational system.

There are toilet-paper arguments, and ongoing debates over money, kids and the television. And then there are the laundry wars. “My husband has this thing with laundry that drives me nuts,”says Amelia Zatik-Sawyer, a 28-year-old mother of two in Cleveland. “He?s supposed to wash and I?m supposed to fold,

but he does like ten loads at a time and then dumps it all on the bed. With two little kids, I don?t have time to fold ten loads all at once, so I?ll leave it. And then he?ll come home and throw it into the closet so he can get into bed. And then it just goes out of control from there.”

For many couples, spats are a necessary evil, something to put up with or avoid (for the sake of the kids!). But new research at the University of Michigan shows that letting out marital disagreements is actually good for your health. It?s holding back your anger, especially when you feel you?ve been wronged, that?s dangerous.

A study published in January followed 192 married couples in Michigan from 1991 to 2011 and found that those who kept their anger in when unfairly attacked did not live as long as those who expressed their anger, says lead study author Ernest Harburg, Ph.D., a retired research scientist at the University of Michigan?s School of Public Health and Psychology Department.

“We?re all interested in living longer,” says Harburg, who?s studied the health effects of spousal (夫妻的) quarrel for over 30years. “We watch our diet, we exercise. Now we need to add …express anger constructively?to that list.”Women in particular may put their health at risk by holding back during arguments with their spouse, a 20-year study of 4,000 men and women from Framingham, Massachusetts, found. “Women who …self-silenced? during conflict with their spouse, compared with women who did not, had four times the risk of dying,”according to findings published in 2010in the journal “Psychosomatic Medicine.” But high schools don?t offer Squabbling 101. So what are the nuts and bolts of a healthy fight?

In Walt Whitman?s poem “When I Heard the Learn?d Astronomer,” he contrasts the stark division between the formal, organized approach to learning about the stars and the natural, personal feeling he has when he looks at the astronomical bodies. We gather that he prefers the mystery of the universe to the “evidences,” “figures,” and “charts” of the “learned astronomer.”

To show these two distinctive views, Whitman divides his eight-line poem into two parts. The first part consists of the first four lines, each line beginning with “when.” These lines all reflect the formal, academic approach to learning about the stars. Whitman, sitting with a group of people, was listening to a lecture given by the knowledgeable astronomer. “I was shown the charts and diagrams.” The “evidences and figures” were all scientifically “arranged in columns.”

The second part of the poem begins with Line 5: “How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick.” While Whitman says his negative reaction to the lecture was “unaccountable,” we get the feeling that he is being sarcastic (讽刺的). Something was missing in the astronomer?s discussion of the stars, so Whiteman, “gliding out” of the lecture hall, “wandered off by himself” (in comparison to the audience), preferring to gaze (凝视) “up in perfect silence at the stars.”

At this point, no more words are necessary, for now there is the mystery of the universe. The stars shine with their own significance, and we can almost feel ourselves breathe a sigh of relief because this is where Whitman has left us. It appears as if in this poem the scientific approach to astronomy threatens to take the romance, beauty and simple appreciation out of gazing the stars. The poem inspires an awe for those amazing stars which lose their twinkle when they become figures, charts and diagrams.

72.What happened to Whitman in the poem?

A.He was convinced by the astronomer. B.He slipped out of the lecture hall.

C.He was giving a lecture about the universe. D.He found astronomy hard to understand.

73.It can be inferred that .

A.the poem compares two methods to study astronomy

B.the theme of the poem is presented in the first four lines

C.the poem was written when Whitman researched stars

D.Whitman creates scenes to make the poem vivid

74.How does Whitman feel about the “learn?d astronomer”?

A.His theory is too complex for the ordinary people.

B.He should use more pictures instead of figures and charts.

C.He doesn?t respect the mystery of the universe.

D.His method of research does not appeal to the poet.

75.The writer will probably agree that .

A.what can be learned seems less important than what can be felt

B.scientific and artistic methods are both necessary to study stars

C.Whitman is one of the greatest natural poets in American history

D.we need to appreciate the beauty of romantic poems by heart

最新2014年高考英语重庆卷阅读理解E篇原文

2014年高考英语重庆卷阅读理解E篇原文 1 2 E It's generally believed that people act the way they do because 3 of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because 4 they care about the environment. They pay $5 for a caramel brulée latte 5 because they like expensive coffee drinks. 6 It's undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions 7 (性情), but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, 8 as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bem, by observing our own 9 behavior. We can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why 10 would we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our 11 minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the 12 environment or like lattes. Actually, we often need to look to our behavior 13 to figure out who we are. 14 Moreover, we don't just use our behavior to learn about our 15 particular types of character—we infer characters that weren't there 16 before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which 17 we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors 18 would disapprove if we didn't. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress 19 the people around us. We should not mistakenly believe that we always 20 behave as a result of some inner disposition. 21 Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people 22 become what they do, though it may not be in compliance (符合) with their 23 true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut's advice: 24 "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend 25 to be." 26 52. According to the passage, personalities and attitudes are 27 commonly believed to . 28 A. determine one's behavior 29
