Why people attend college?

After graduation from high school many young people have the option to directly enter the work force. Most students who have the opportunity, however, decide to to to the college before finding jobs. They attend college to obtain more choices, higher salaries, and more opportunities for advancement in an increasingly competitive job market.

Before attending college, students have a limited opportunity to specialize. After obtaining a specific college degree a job applicant can be competive for previously unavailable jobs. For instance, applicants with Computer Science degrees would not only be qualified for jobs in high- tech companies, they would also be well prepared for any job with computer skills as a prerequisite. With a larger of potential jobs to choose from, degree holders are more likely to find a job that suits their particular needs and interests.

Additionally, employers are willing to pay a premium for highly qualifed applicant. For example, many companies desire employees who are competent in more than one language and offer higher salaries to attract them. Even if a job applicant without a college degree has high standardized test scores, employers may still place a higher value to an applicant with similar test scoress who also possesses credentials from a well-known university. Because of the extent to which a college degree is a accepted by employers as proof of competence in a given field, college graduates are not only more likely to receive more job offers, they can also command higher salaries than applicants who lack college diplomas.

Finally, in addition to offering more choice and higher salaries, a college degree offers access to jobs with a clear path towards professional advancement. A B.S. in biology, for example, could allow a student to find a job in a lab after graduation, a first step on the road towards a career in scientific research. The same major could also be used to apply to medical school, and a career as a doctor. Both of these avenues would be unavailable without taking the first step of an undergraduate degree in biology.

Are parents the best teachers? Obviously, in most cases the earliest teachers people have are their parents, and parents are generally most concerned about the development of their children. However, it is not completely true to say that parents are the best teachers. First of all, not all parents are good teachers. As normal individuals, parents more or less have some bad habits. Even though parents almost instinctively devote themselves to cultivating their offspring, the outcome might turn out to be disappointment, for all children tend to unconsciously or subconsciously copy everything including the bad ones from their parents. Another decificiency of parents as teachers is the fact that most parents are lack of common senses of education. All too often we observe some parents tend to pursue their cherished but failed dream by forcing their children to develop in a prearranged direction. Ironically, when their children do not follow the instruction, the children will be regarded as disobedient or allegedly rebellious. In fact, it is parents rather than their children that virtually disobey common senses. Moreover, some parents are qualified as good teachers, but not all of them are the best ones. When children are in the preliminary school, it is not surprising that parents are perhaps capable of teaching their children almost every subject even better than professional teachers in the school. But the situation will not last long. We live in a world where knowledge is accumulated by multiplying and at the same time becomes more and more specialized. Therefore, to be a professional in a certain field today takes much longer time than has ever been before. No parent is able to be professional in all fields, though they might be experts in one or more fields. Wise parents often release rather than charge their children as early as possible. They are aware of the possiblity outside the family. Parents may, nevertheless, help their children much more than do good teachers. Most parts of children education are virtually beyond teacher’s reaches. It is parents that supplement. Psychology studies have shown us that parent’s love sometimes has astonishingly magic power to their children. Albert Einstein’s mother and that of Forest Gump are both good examples. On the

(1) Which one do you prefer, to solve problems on your own experience and knowledge, or to ask others for advice? As knowledge and experience serve as twim towers in problem-solving, one is often presented with two major paths that pave the way for final fulfillment, eitther to wrack his brain, just like what happened to Neuton, siiting for many years under an apple tree and eventually figuring out ond of the greatest universal rules that govern the whole globe, or to seek for others’widsom through their advice, just as in the case of Benjinin Franklin, gathering great minds under one roof and then establishing a most world-renown libray. Both ways work. When a practical goal is involved, however, Benjimin Franklin may best be regareded as a role model in this respect and asking people for advice often turn out to be the prime alternative. Experience and knowledge borrowed or learned from others’advice contribute greatly to effectiveness and effeciency for a goal-accomplishment. Not all experience and knowledge related to problem-solving can be obtained by personal effort alone due to limitations of mind and capabilities of each individual. A single thought in someone’s mind is, more often than not, far less shining compared with group’s wisdom. That explains the famous old saying that one sees further when standing upon the shoulders’of past great giants; that explains why a great leader is always with greater minds; that also explains why teamwork in corperation is highly emphasized in the 21st century. Brainstorm and exchange of ideas between different thoughts never fail to enhance capabilities of each individula involved, a team, a company, an institution, a country, or even the entire global village. Asking others’advice instead of getting everything done on one’s own promotes democracy and communication too. In terms of democracy, it is necessary to give others rights and chances to speak since the problem may concern them in different ways, and their saying in turn reflects our respect toward freedom of speech as well as their wisdom. In terms of communication, idea exchange sometimes focuses more than solutions, and hereby better mutual understanding about perspectives, principles, praticalities and personalities of each other. Admittely turning to others for help and suggestion by no means refers to absolute and irresponsible dependence. Consideration upon different thoughts and ideas broadens our mind, enlarges our vision, furthers understanding, enhances more effective and efficient brainstorm, and stresses mutual respect in groups and communities, which undoubtedly gives rise to better, if not the best solutions. As is paraphrased from John F Kenedy, brainstormed, there is little we cannot do while divided, there is little we can do. (2) Case of Benjinin Franklin, gathering great minds under one roof and then establishing a most world-renown libray.

Do u think that ease does not challenge us and that we need adversity to help us discover who we are? The moment we halt, the moment we retrogress. And ease always lead us to such a halting situation where we enjoy lives cozily, worry about nothing but odds and ends, never introspect our deeds, and do not bother to think about what kind of life we really want and deserve. On the contrary, people are apt to transform and improve in adversities. Thus, ease does not challenge us; adversity tries us.Through the story of Rachel Carson , writer of Silent Spring, the statement can be exemplified clearly. In late 1950s, Carson was a well-known naturalist and science writer in public, but her life was hapless and suffering. Her beloved mother, who almost accompanied her for a whole lifetime, died of illness;Carson herslf also fighted with cancer and received numorous frightening warings from chemical manufactures who thought her undone book,Silent Spring ,would affect their profits. Those tortured the emaciated lady and distracted her from writing.Deep in despair,Carson pored over her life and eventually realized nothing was more important for a naturalist like her to protect the mother nature and appeal the public attention on those pressing issues. So she devoted herself to the researching and writing about the pesticide,DDT.Even the obstruction from the government which approved propagation of DDT,the continuous threatening from the industry ,and her deteriorating physical conditions failed to inhibit from achieving her enterprise.Once her book was pubished, Carson was belittled as an antihumanitarian crank, a priestess of nature, and a hysterical woman by the proponents of DDT. Some officials even declared she inspired a "vociferous, misinformed group of nature-balancing, organic gardening, bird-loving, unreasonable citizenry."But the public took her seriously and read her book. And the modern enviroment protect movement took on stage because the book.Since those most adverse situations helped Carson mused on her life and lead her answer what was most significant to her, they were not just sufferings, but also the calalyst to her transformation from a writer to a fighter, who bravely spoke out the dangers of pesticides and undauntedly endured so many attacks with a dignity, strength of conviction, and moral courage alien to her opponents. As for me, adversity sometimes can be treasures imparting me a brand-new perspective of life.11 years ago,I was ungently sent to a municipal hospital in mid China to take a cerebral operation after falling down to the concrete ground accidentally.Lying on the bed, I was paralysed by the very thought of death.Fortunately, 12 hours later,I woke up from anesthetized condition and the operation was quite successful. But the ensuing convalescence seemed more harrowing and excruciating, since the auxiliary intravenous injections were endless and tormented me all the day. Now,I can tell that the unexpected spell from school not only separated me from my friends for a month, but also segregated me from the previous self forever. Some adults do not get a chance to introspect their lives until some calamities befall them, but I ,a seven-year-old girl,by enduring
