Today is a special Christmas for my family. My husband

lost his job working in a bank during the crisis. He seemed

unlikely to get another well-paid bank job. It was incredibly

difficult to see him go to the storehouse to look for work, hoping

and praying that he would be offered a position, where he would

be paid even less than his own teenage children were making. His friends encouraged him to keep on and not to lose heart. I was also right behind his friends and told him to just "go for it".

It brought us a feeling of pride when he finally got the job. With his new job in the storehouse, we were able to pay our rent and buy our groceries, though money was still very tight. For I didn't get paid much for my job in a church. We had to pay land and school taxes and a few other expenses were coming up, and therefore he decided to look for another job.Since the storehouse job was just on the weekends—three 13-hour shifts, he found another job for the holiday season, making deliveries from Monday to Thursday.

After he started working both , I seldom saw him. In these past six weeks he has been working very hard every single day.

With the Christmas approaching, I wanted to make it an extra special one this year.I wanted our house to be filled with company—I didn't want anybody to be alone this year.I had the Christmas tree decorated yesterday and worked all day to make the house look festive and warm.

My husband came back home at 4 p.m. today and looked exhausted as usual. He broke into the biggest smile the instant he stepped into the house. He grabbed me and hugged me closely. And then he apologized for not being around in the past weeks and not being able to help me with all the preparations for Christmas. He said he knew it had been hard on me that he hadn't been around and he was grateful that I complained nothing.

I almost fell over! With tears in my eyes, I said that I had no words to tell him how much I loved him and how proud I was of him and that he was such a great husband and father and provider for me.

I won’t hesitate to announce that I consider the day I

finished my tough rowing and keep myself free of

loneliness to be one of my most unforgettable experiences.

Being the youngest female ever to row alone across the

Atlantic Ocean, I was constantly faced with the same

question: How did you survive that daring adventure? You are an only 20-year old youngster and you row an 18-foot boat for 70 days through those strong winds and violent waves?

To be honest, for me, the physical challenge was not the toughest one. Before making my mind to row across the Atlantic, I had trained myself hard: cycled 3,300 miles, run across the Mojave Desert on my own, and swum the 325-mile length of the Allegheny River. No, the most demanding part would be mental: How would I deal with the terrible loneliness and the boredom on the vast sea for such endless hours and hours?

I set off on January 1st and my first aim was to swim past the quarter-way mark, which would take about 20 days. I made it on January 20, a gray and cloudy day. I had thought to do something to celebrate my first goal such as treating myself to a chocolate bar or something else. But I didn’t. I was suffering a lot from unbearable boredom and loneliness of the long sea journey.. Eating, rowing, sleeping, staring at the sky, watching the ocean. It seemed to feel the same every day. Just imagined I hadn’t seen any landing at least more than two weeks

Minute after minute, hour after hour, day after day, then that expected day came

at last! It was around dusk, I noticed something move on the horizon. Yes, some dolphins! They approached me and swam around my boat. Suddenly I felt so blessed. They had arrived to keep me company and helped to celebrate, just when I extremely needed them! For the next 15 minutes, I did row at full speed with all my strength with those lovely creatures around. By the time they were to leave me and we parted and went our separate ways, I was not lonely any more.

After 70 days and five hours at sea, I finally reached my final destination. I was

proud that I made it, all 2,817 miles, which helped to raise $70,000 for the Blue Planet Run Foundation, an organization for funding drinking water. I’ve been told some athletes struggled to get through just by imagining the end during the whole process. But for me, what creates wonders is to focus your mind on the moment, where you experience the personal growth—those moments of awareness of being connected to the sun, the weather, and the waves. And, on the best day of my life, I had to admit those dolphins really freed me from terrible loneliness.

28. Which of the following belongs to part of preparation for the row?

30. The last two paragraphs implies that _________

The Barbie Doll is a famous brand all over the world today.

But do you know how it was created? Here’s the story about it.

Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara playing with paper

dolls, and noticed that she had fun giving them adult roles. She

realized that there could be a gap in the market.

During a trip to Germany in 1956, Ruth Handler spotted a German doll called the Bild Lilli doll in a shop window. The

adult-figured Lilli doll was exactly what Handler had in mind for a long time, so she bought three of them. Then she gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel, a large company in the United States, where Handler redesigned the doll and renamed it Barbie, after her daughter Barbara.

It was not until March 9, 1959 that the doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York and gained success. And that day is regarded as Barbie’s official birthday. Mattel acquires the rights to the Bild Lilli doll in 1964 and production of Lilli was stopped. The first Barbie doll wore a black and white zebra

striped(条纹的) swimsuit and topknot ponytail(马尾辫), and was available as either a blonde(金发)or brunette(褐色头发).

The doll was marketed as a “Teenage Fashion Model”, with her clothes created by Mattel fashion designer Charlotte Johnson. Barbie’s appearance has been changed many times, most notably in 1971 when the doll’s eyes were adjusted to look forwards rather sideways. Barbie was one of the first toys to have a marketing strategy based expensively on television advertising, which has been copied since by many other toys.

Today the Barbie doll is a $ 1.9 billion a year industry, with Mattel claiming that three Barbie dolls are sold every second. Barbie products include not only the range of dolls with their clothes and accessories(配饰), but also a huge range of Barbie branded goods such as books, fashion items and video games.

Barbie has appeared in a series of animated films and makes a brief guest appearance in the 1999 film Toy Story 2. Barbie has become a cultural icon and has been given honors that are rare in the toy world.

Advice for Adolescents

Youth is unforgettable to everyone. However, adolescence can be tough, and it’s

common to feel sad from time to time. If such feelings don’t fade away or you are stuck to them so much that you can’t handle them, you may be suffering from depression.

36 .

Try to avoid separating yourself from others

When you’re upset, you may not feel like seeing anybody or doing anything. Even getting out of bed in the morning can be that difficult, but isolating yourself simply makes that depression worse. 37 Stay with friends, especially those who are active.

Keep physical health

Living a healthy lifestyle can create wonders for your mood. Ever heard of a "runners high"? Physical activity can be as effective as medicine for depression, so go in for sports such as cycling or taking a dance class. Any activity helps! 38 As for food, ma ke sure you’re feeding your self with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Try not to touch alcohol and drugs

Perhaps you say you want to lift your spirits by occasionally drinking or trying drugs in an effort to escape from your bad feelings just for a short time. However, such dangerous behaviors only cause you to become more depressed. 39 . You will need special treatment for your alcohol/drug problem.

40 .

Stress and worry often lead to depression. Tell your teacher honestly if exams or classes seem too much to you. Besides, when you have a health concern you feel you won’t talk to your parents about, don’t hesitate to see a doctor. Believe that a health professional can help you approach your parents and guide you toward appropriate treatment. If you have a hard time dealing with relationship, friendship, or family problems, turn to an adult you trust.

A. Ask your parents for help.

B. Seek help if you get stressed.

C. Even a short walk can benefit you.

D. The more exercise you do, the healthier you will become.

E. Read the tips below and yo u’ll have more power than you guess.

Today I’d like to share the poem with you I think everyone is expected to balance between work and play whether you are a student or an adult.

Being hard-working is one of the qualities to make your dream come true, without which you can not achieve success. Once you set your goal, you must work hard until you succeed. It is no good leaving things half done. However, you can not work all the time without proper rest. Otherwise you cannot keep physical and mental health. Therefore, when you work, remember to put all your heart into it. Then when you play, you will be even more involved and relaxed.

Only when you understand the relationship between work and play can you arrange our time properly and achieve our goal without harming our health.
