A: It's late, Mike. Are you busy?

B: Yeah. I'm ... applying online for my graduate study.

A: Applying online? Wow, I didn't know you are going to graduate school. What are you going to

study?

B: Biology. You know, I'm going to graduate with a bachelor's degree in that.

A: That's great. But why don't you find a job but choose to stay in school?

B: Well, for two reasons. First, I like biology, my major, and I want to do something more about it. Second, jobs are difficult to find now. So they told me.

A: OK. Then graduate study might be a good idea.

B: Exactly. After I graduate with a master's degree, the job market will probably be better.

A: And you've got stronger qualification. Yeah, I see your point. Good plan for your future. So ... what schools are you applying to?

B: The University of Chicago, New York University, and UCLA.

A: Um-hum. How sure are you about the result?

B: I ... I can't tell. They are pretty good schools and there's a lot of competition. I don't know ... A: Come on, Mike. I know you work hard and you will graduate with honor. Be confident, and remember where there is a will, there is a way.

Passage One

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Script:

Passage One

One thing in life is certain ??change. Things never stay the same. If you are hoping for everything to be the same, you will be disappointed. Just think back to how things were five years ago and you will realize that so many things are different in a very short time. When change comes we have several options, some of which are more adaptive than others. Let's take a look at them.

The first option is to refuse to change or adapt to any new circumstances, just like the person who still uses a word processor instead of a computer. These are people who are afraid of change. When change requires new learning, as it often does, some people don't think they will be able to master the new skills. So it is easier to simply refuse the changes than adapt.

The second possibility is the slow starter. These people either refuse to change or anxiously run around trying to figure out what to do about it. They do not like change any more than the first type of people and they resist and resist until one day, they realize that the change may actually bring benefits. Once they see that there is a payoff for them, they fairly easily do the necessary things to adapt to the change.

A third possibility is the over-anxious people among us. They are the ones who are always making mountains out of hills. And they have a nervous energy about them whenever faced with a novel situation. They imagine all the possible scenarios about what could occur and seem to just go around in circles. They don't adapt to the change; they just keep worrying about it.

The final and most rewarding possibility are the people who understand that change is a part of everything. These people welcome change. They realize that change is what makes things

happen. These people are quick to make the necessary adaptations and suffer the least from what is to come.

Passage Two

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Script:

Passage Two

Sometimes a higher power brings us so close to death that we may better appreciate life. In 2004, I had burns on 30 percent of my body when my kitchen caught fire. This horrible experience has given me a stronger personality, and has taught me to value everything I have, the people closest to my heart and each experience I encounter, both positive and negative.

On the morning of the fire, I was preparing to go to the doctor, and my mother was on her way to accompany me. I wanted my apartment to have a nice smell, and put the end of a candle in an old sauce pan and let it burn. But the candle suddenly blew up and my clothes were on fire. I put out the fire and dialed 911. I was lucky because I survived.

After two weeks in the hospital, I could go back home and spent an additional three months in the care of my mother. The time and isolation allowed me to think about the past, present and most importantly the future. I thought about my strengths and weaknesses and what really matters. I became comfortable with myself and found myself growing into a stronger and more independent woman.

Over the next year, I wore special gloves for the good of my skin. People would stare at me and ask what was wrong. I realized that although I was not a shallow person, I did sometimes have difficulty understanding people that were different from me. This experience has taught me not to judge others, but to be sympathetic with those that may be going through a hard time.

One last lesson that I learned from this incident is that if I'm going to do something I will do it with passion. It made me realize that through my passion I can leave a positive impact on the world. I will enjoy life to the fullest and do what I can to help others do the same.

It's been a very busy week and half. I'm an IT engineer by day and so I've been deeply buried in meetings and engineering issues. Though I'm doing this job every day, I still want some change, or changed by life. Many of us are caught away by the many things that catch us by day and distract us from the dreams we carry inside us by life. Great dreams we had since we were kids, but now we simply forget them. It is a challenge then, a challenge of doing the daily task of living, and at the same time thinking about what is the best that life has to offer. I don't want to give up my dreams, but I don't know how, either.
