Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born on October 21, 1833, in Sweden, the fourth of Caroline Nobel’s eigh t children. Alfred was often sickly as a child, but he was always lively and curious about the world around him. Although he was a skilled engineer and ready inventor, Alfred’s father struggled to set up a profitable business in Sweden.

When Alfred was 4, his father moved to Russia, to take a job manufacturing explosives. The family followed him in 1842. Alfred’s newly wealthy parents sent him to private tutors in Russia, and he quickly mastered chemistry and became fluent in English, French, German and Russian as well as his native language, Swedish.

Alfred left Russia at the age of 18. After spending a year in Paris studying chemistry, he moved to the United States. After five years, he returned to Russia and began working in his father’s factory. In 1859, the company closed down. The family moved back to Sweden, and Alfred soon began experimenting with explosives. In 1864, a huge explosion in the family’s Swedish factory killed five people, including Alfred’s younger brother Emil. Dramatically affected by the event, Nobel set out to develop a safer explosive. In 1867, he produced what he named “Dynamite(炸药).”

In 1888, Alfred’s brother Ludvig died while in France. A French newspaper mistakenly published Alfred’s obituary(讣告)instead of Ludvig’s, and condemned Alfred for his invention of dynamite. Annoyed by the event and disappointed with how he felt he might be remembered, Nobel set aside a large part of his estate(遗产) to establish the Nobel Prizes to honor men and women for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine and literature, and for working toward peace. Sweden’s central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, established the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1968 in honor of Alfred Nobel.

He died on December 10, 1896, in Italy, leaving 31,225,000 Swedish kronor to fund the Nobel Prizes.

Last year Chinese-owned company Achieve Education bought Chase Grammar, a boarding school in Cannock, Staffordshire. Chase Gra mmar includes a program that offers extra support for pupils from China. “This trend is very good and I am not at all surprised,” Barnaby Lenon, chairman of the Independent Schools Council, told the Global Times, adding that Chinese people like the English education system. “We welcome Chinese investors in British private education.” “Chase Grammar School is small, and the classes are small, too. It gives the school a family atmosphere,” Jackie Medhurst, principal of Chase Grammar School, said in a welcome note on the school’s website.

Small class sizes, personal care, good exam results, and entry to world famous universities are features that are most attractive to Chinese students. But many parents are also worried that foreign investors might expand the proportion(比例)of international students, and that might destroy the British tradition.

It seems that Chase Grammar does not intend to hide their attempts to attract Chinese families. It has set up a China office in Shanghai to facilitate Chinese parents’ communicat ion with the school.

Some international branches of British boarding schools are very popular in Asia. In recent years, the Chinese passion for the British boarding school system has led some of the best-known schools such as Harrow and Wellington to set up satellite schools in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. And the trend continues.

It seems that the rising wealthy class in Asia isn’t satisfied with international branches in their own countries. They want to send their kids to the original British boarding schools to be surrounded by English people and immersed in the British culture. To support their children studying in the UK, Chinese parents are buying houses in Britain. According to a survey, houses near universities and outstanding primary and secondary schools are the most preferable location for Chinese buyers.

Compared to the independent school system, universities are more open. It is reported that China remains the leading source of international students for London.

Every few years comes a fitness trend that has people scratching their heads in amazement. “Crunning” will probably be one of them. The “c” stands for “crawling”(爬行). This new sport needs two-legged humans running on all fours!

The funny idea is the brainchild of Shaun McCarthy. The 34-year-old is convinced that it will revolutionize fitness as we know it. According to the sports enthusiast, “The only thing that crunning’s changed about fitness is that it’s changed everything about fitness.”

Mccarthy has no scientific evidence to prove that crunning is more efficient than traditional two-legged running. However, he believes it is a more effective way to exercise because it puts an emphasis on the shoulders and arms, providing a complete body workout. Mccarthy also says crunning seems to tire him out more. He therefore concludes that the unconventional exercise is a bigger calorie burner than normal running.

While experts generally agree that crunning may provide a better workout, many are not sure if it is the right exercise for humans. Fitness coach Kevin Dean says we are not built to be on all fours and our wrists are therefore not as strong as our ankles. He believes crunning, which he calls a fad(时尚), could result in bad wrist and shoulder injuries, not to mention broken noses.

But McCarthy is not worried. Since the release of his crunning video a few weeks ago, many Melbourne residents have been seen scampering around on all fours. As it turns out they are not the only ones. In the Chinese

city of Zhengzhou, crawling, a much slower version of crunning, has been a favorite activity for many years. According to some enthusiasts, the light exercise that is believed to date back two thousand years to the Han Dynasty, is good for curing back and spine ailments.

Ready to give crunning try? Then Mccarthy recommends investing in some good shoes, hardy gloves and most important of all, a face mask!

It takes sb some time to do sth,所以把finishing改为finish。

第九处:has→had 考查时态。根据语境可知此处是指发生在遇见他之前的事情,故用过去完成时。

第十处:on→in 考查介词。固定短语:keep in touch with sb与某人保持联系。

参考范文:

Save Water, Save Life

Dear students,

As we all know, water is the source of life. Without water, there would be nothing alive on the earth. But the fresh water available on the earth is becoming less and less. Facing such a serious water shortage problem, we should take immediate action.

First, we should recycle the water we use every day. Second, when we wash up, we shouldn’t leave the water running. And when we take a bath, we may turn the tap down and turn it off in time. Besides, we should spread water knowledge to the public.

Remember: Save water, save life. Don’t let our tear become the last drop of water on our planet.

Thank you !

(Text 1)

W: What can I do for you?

M: May I see some of your best T-shirts?

(Text 2)

W: I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t finish the job as required.

M: Oh, no, Sally, don’t say sorry. Anyway, you’ve tried your best.

(Text 3)

M: Would you like to go to the movies tonight at 11 o’clock?

W: You must be joking. My train leaves at 6:10 tomorrow morning.

(Text 4)

W: I’m going to the supermarket. What would you like me to buy for you?

M: Would you please buy some fruit for me while you are there?

W: With pleasure.

(Text 5)

M: What shall we do this weekend?

W: I have no idea. Which do you prefer, going to the cinema or playing table tennis?

M: Neither. I’d like to climb a mountain.

W: Sounds good, if the weather is fine.

(Text 6)

W: good morning, sir. Can I help you?

M: I reserved a room in your hotel a week ago. My name is Michael Brown.

W: Just a minute, please. Yes. A single room for October 15.

M: That’s right.

W: Are you paying in cash or by credit card?

M: Do you accept traveler’s check?

W: Certainly. Here’s your key card, sir. Room 1505. Have a pleasant day.

M: Thank you. Bye.

(Text 7)

W: Everyone seems to be on a diet. Have you noticed that?

M: At least everyone is talking about it. A neighbor of mine is on a banana diet. She eats one banana for breakfast, one for lunch, and two for dinner.

W: That would be bad for her teeth and her health. Has she lost any weight?

M: She doesn’t look any thinner. My sister eats eggs to lose weight, only eggs for breakfast, for lunch and for dinner.

W: That’s bad for the heart! Something in eggs is good for losing weight, but too many eggs are bad for the heart. M: I’ve read that, too. Then what about a fish diet? One of my cousins eats nothing but fish, even for breakfast! W: That’s too expensive. The best way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. That’s why I’m on my way to the tennis court.

(Text 8)

M: Mary, what’s the date today?

W: Let me see. It’s the thirteenth.

M: I thought it was!

W: Yes. I have promised Ann a game of tennis this evening.

M: Oh? I thought they were mending your tennis courts.

W: They’ve already finished the work. The club opened again last night. But why did you ask me the date? Isn’t it on the newspaper you’re reading?

M: Let me look. It is not today’s paper.

W: Oh?

M: I wondered why the news seemed old. It’s yesterday’s. I’m stupid again! Where is today’s paper, anyway? W: I haven’t seen it. Is there any important news in it?

M: How do I know? I haven’t read today’s paper yet. I really want it to find out what films are showing this week.

I thought perhaps you would come with me to see a film on Saturday.

W: I’d love to, but I’m afraid I can’t. I’m going back home for the weekend.

(Text 9)

W: Officer! Officer! Somebody just took my purse! Everything is gone.

M: Just calm down for a minute...OK. Now what did the person look like?

W: He was tall.

M: About how old was he?

W: And about how old was he? Oh, he was quite young. I think... Sixteen or seventeen.

M: And what color was his hair?

W: Blond, and it was long.

M: What was he wearing?

W: Jeans and a T-shirt.

M: Fine, and now tell me about your purse. What did it look like?

W: Well, it was dark brown. It’s made of leather.

M: OK, now I’ll need your name and address.

(Text 10)

Annie Oakley was a woman who became famous for her ability to shoot a gun and hit very small objects. There are hundreds of stories about her. Many of the stories involve her adventures in the American Wild West. Others tell about her travels with native Americans. However, most of the stories are not true. She did not grow up in the Wild West, nor did she fight in any battles. Annie Oakley was a performer in a traveling Wild West show. She used her skills at shooting a gun to become one of the most famous sharpshooters in American history.

Annie Oakley was born in 1860 in Ohio. Her family was very poor. At the age of 8, she decided to help them earn money. She taught herself how to use her grandfather’s gun and began hunting animals for food and then sold the animals to the people in her town. When she was 15, she had made enough money to pay for her family’s farm. Soon her ability to shoot became well known in her town. She got the name “Little Sure Shot” because of her shooting ability and because she was only 1.5 meters tall. However, she left the people who loved her on November 3, 1926.

I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday in stead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day late, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc.
