Questions9-18(20marks)

Read the following article and answer questions9-18on the next page.

The Widening Rcial Wealth Divide

1.Everyone knows that wealth is unequally distributed. The work of Thomas Piketty has made this a mainstream concern. But the magnitude of the gap between white and black Americans is on a different scale.According to a recent report from two progressive think tanks,CFED and the Institute for Policy Studies, white households own,on average, seven times as much wealth as African-American households(and six times as much as Latino ones). The Forbes100billionaires are collectively as rich as all black Americans combined. At current growth rates,it would take black Americans two hundred and twenty-eight years to have as much wealth as white Americans have today.

2.The unemployment rate among black Americans is roughly twice that of whites, and black people earn,on average, between twelve and twenty-two per cent less than white people with similar education and experience. But the wealth gap between black and white Americans is much bigger than the income gap, thanks to a toxic combination of institutionalized discrimination, persistent racism, and policies that amplify inequality. As Thomas Shapiro,a sociologist at Brandeis and the co-author of the seminal book“Black Wealth/White Wealth,”told me,“History and legacy created the racial gap.Policies have maintained it.”Together, they contribute to what he’s called“the hidden cost of being African-American.”

3.Discrimination,though no longer legal,is still pervasive. It holds down black incomes and has a huge impact on homeownership—which Shapiro identifies as“the largest driver of the racial wealth gap.”Only forty-one per cent of black Americans own their homes, compared with seventy-one per cent of whites, and black homeowners earn a much smaller return on their property.Because they are less likely to inherit money or get family help buying a home, they make smaller down payments and,on average, buy houses eight years later in life, leaving less time for the investment to appreciate.House prices in majority-black neighborhoods have also risen less than those in comparable majority-white ones.As Asante-Muhammad told me,“White people still do not generally want to live in a neighborhood that’s more than twenty to twenty-five per cent black.”That means fewer buyers, which holds house prices down.Shapiro has found that housing segregation costs black families tens of thousands of dollars in home equity.

4.The mortgage-interest and other real-estate tax deductions in the US.means that

the bigger your mortgage and the higher your income-tax rate are the more you save..They cost the government north of a hundred and thirty billion dollars a year, more than seventy per cent of which goes to the richest twenty per cent of Americans.Money that could fund affordable housing, income subsidies, and allowances for first-time homeowners instead just helps rich people pay for their houses.

5.Closing the racial wealth gap would require radical measures, like reparations, which few politicians will discuss. But what ’s really dismal is that even reforms that could keep the gap from getting wider —ending the mortgage-interest deduction, challenging residential segregation —are politically toxic. The attention now being paid to the racial wealth divide is a sign that some things have changed. The absence of the topic from the political conversation shows that most things haven ’t.Questions 9-13(10marks)

●For questions 9-13,choose the the best title the each paragraph from the box below.

Questions19-25(14marks)

●Read the following article from a newspaper and answer questions19-25.

●For question19-25,choose the correct answer A,B,C or D.

Hacking,Cryptography, and the Countdown to Quantum Computing Given the recent ubiquity of cyber-scandals—Colin Powell’s stolen e-mails, Simone Biles’s leaked medical records, half a billion plundered Yahoo accounts—you might get the impression that hackers can already break into just about any computer they want. But the situation could be a lot worse. The encryption methods that protect everything from online shopping to diplomatic communications remain effectively impregnable when properly implemented, even if,in practice, there are frequent breaches—whistle-blowers,careless clicks, and so on.This relatively happy state of affairs will not, however, endure.Scientists around the world are inching toward the development of a fully functioning quantum computer,a new type of machine that would,on its first day of operation,be capable of cracking the Internet’s most widely used codes.Precisely when that day will arrive is unclear, but it could be in as little as ten years.Experts call the countdown Y2Q:“years to quantum.”

This looming but uncertain deadline hovered in the air at the Hilton Toronto last week, where government officials,cyber-security researchers, and representatives from companies like Amazon,Microsoft, and Intel gathered for an international workshop on“quantum-safe cryptography.”Michele Mosca,a professor at the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing and the co-host of the workshop, pegged the odds of reaching Y2Q by2026at one in seven, rising to one in

two by2031.But the exact date doesn’t really matter, because the time needed to invent,battle-test,standardize,and roll out new security algorithms Internet-wide might be just as long.Brian LaMacchia, the head of security and cryptography at Microsoft Research, has a working estimate of2030.“The people who try to build quantum computers, who sit on the floor upstairs from me,said fifteen years last year,”he told me.“So I said,O.K.,let’s work backwards from that. And I’m out of time.”

Classical computers encode information as a series of bits, which can be either0 or1,and then manipulate those bits according to simple rules.A quantum computer isn’t just a faster or better classical computer;it’s fundamentally different.Instead of bits,it stores information as qubits, which can be0,1,or both at once. That’s a consequence of the quantum-mechanical property of superposition, which allows physical objects to exist in multiple states,or even be in different places,at one time. Thus, two qubits can represent four states simultaneously(00,01,10,11),and a hundred qubits can represent1.3quadrillion quadrillion. This quantum peculiarity allows the computer to find patterns in huge data sets very quickly—to get detailed information about a forest without looking at all the trees,as Mosca put it.The main mathematical challenge in breaking current codes is factoring very large numbers, which for classical computers is the equivalent of trying combination after combination to see if it opens a lock.As the keys get longer, the locks get tougher. It took about two years on hundreds of computers to unlock a single instance of the RSA-768algorithm,which,as its name suggests, requires a key that is seven hundred and sixty-eight bits long.Doing the same for its more secure cousin,RSA-1024, would take about a thousand times longer, and RSA-4096is effectively out of reach.A quantum computer,on the other hand, would tackle such problems effortlessly.

When quantum computing was first proposed,in the nineteen-eighties,it was mostly a theoretical curiosity. That changed in1994,when Peter Shor, then at A.T.& T.’s Bell Labs, demonstrated how it could apply to cryptography.Once the significance of Shor’s work became clear, the race to actually build a quantum computer became one of the hottest tickets in physics.Among the biggest players was the https://www.360docs.net/doc/7e11188557.html,ernment,which by2007was spending about sixty million dollars a year on quantum-computing research. It didn’t just want to build one;it also needed to know whether anyone else was getting close. After all,top-secret messages sent today could still be embarrassing or dangerous if they were intercepted and stored, then

decrypted by a device built a decade from now.

19.Ever when properly used, the current encryption methods will still be easily cracked by

A.a quantum computer.

B.a whistle clicks.

B.careless clicks. D.a hacker

20.According to Michele Mosca,the possibility of reaching Y2Q in2030is

D.higher than1/2

21.2030,the estimated year of reaching Y2Q,is a number given by

Questions26-45(20marks)

●Read the following article and choose the best word for each space.

●For question26-45,mark one letter A,B,C or D on your Answer Sheet.

Is Running Long Distance Healthy?

Debates inside of the running world are old and contentious. One of the biggest is how many miles to log every week.A recent feature in Runner’s World tackled just this question,(26)by a2012presentation by epidemiologist Duck-Lee(27) which he claimed most benefits associated with running drop(28)after twenty miles each week.In fact,Lee stated, people running over twenty show no significant difference with non-runners.

You can imagine the consternation expressed by(29)clocking in a hundred or two.In a culture transfixed by four-minute workouts and four-hour workweeks, news that you don’t need to put in a lot of time to get maximal results is always (30).But as the writer,Alex Hutchinson, reports, one critical piece of information was left out of Lee’s(31).

Hutchinson uses death rates among smokers(32)non-smokers as an analogy. Smokers obviously have higher rates of lung cancer;smoking causes cancer.You(33) statistically adjust lung cancer rates between groups, because the whole point of the study is that smoking causes cancer, which leads to more deaths.(34)this is exactly what Lee had done with his study on runners.

(35)he published his study in a peer-reviewed journal two years later,Lee still believed running long distances didn’t do much for you, though in the2014report he claimed that just five to ten minutes a day has significant health benefits. The reality is that yes, running in short, intense bursts is healthier for your cardiovascular system than not running at all. That does not imply that benefits do not(36)with distance, however.

Biostatistician Paul T.Williams came to a much(37)conclusion regarding distance. With access to156,000runners,his sample size was over(38) Lee’s.Among Williams’s findings, men putting forty miles a week behind them were 26percent less likely to develop coronary heart disease than runners logging thirteen; runners in the same group exhibited the(39)likelihood of cardiacarrhythmias. Point being:distance matters.

Hutchinson notes the impossibility of conducting long-term studies on large groups over decades. You also have to(40)in diet, something not discussed in his article though critically important when discussing cardiovascular issues. As he concludes, there is no(41)answer for how long or how far one should run each week.

What is important, however,is running. There are other less impactful ways of

getting your heart rate up:cycling, rowing, swimming. And when dealing with health, enjoyment is essential. If you’re dreading a(42),it’s not worth it-you won’t stick with the program and will be depressed(43)the results(or lack thereof). As I(44)tell my students and clients, feeling comfortable in your skin is a critical marker of fitness.Take care of your body and mind(45)work,but it shouldn’t feel like work.
