第二部分阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,满分50分)

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项标号涂黑。

A

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year-round sun. You may think people in such an attractive and exciting, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.

Many intelligent people still consider happiness equal to fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more lasting emotion.

Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.

I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spell s “happiness”. But in memoir (回忆录) after memoir, famous people expose the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun depression, alcoholism (酗酒), drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and extreme loneliness.

Ask an unmarried man why he refuses to get married even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he’s honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment (承诺). For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with babies are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.

The way people stick to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever achieving real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness, then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true More times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very efforts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain unavoidably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment and self-improvement.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating (解放) realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time now we can devote more hours to activities that can truly increase our happiness. It liberates money buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy we now understand that all those rich and glamorous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

The discovery that language can be a barrier (障碍) to communication is quickly made by all who travel, study, govern or sell. Whether the activity is tourism, research, government, policing or business, the lack of a common language can severely delay progress or can stop it altogether.

Although communication problems of this kind must happen thousands of times each day, very few become public knowledge. Publicity comes only when a failure to communicate has major results, such as strikes, lost orders, legal problems or deadly accidents--even, at times, war.

One reported example of communication failure took place in 1970, when several Americans ate a species of poisonous mushroom. No remedy was known, and two of the people died within days.

A radio report of the case was heard by a chemist who knew of a treatment that had been successfully used in 1959 and published in 1963. Why had the American doctors not heard of it seven years later? Possibly because the report of the treatment had been published only in journals written in European languages other than English.

Several comparable cases have been reported. But isolated (孤立的) examples do not give an impression of the size of the problem--something that can come only from studies of the use or avoidance of foreign-language materials and contacts in different communicative situations. In the English-speaking scientific world, for example, surveys of books and documents consulted in libraries and other information agencies have shown that very little foreign-language material is ever consulted. Library requests in the field of science and technology showed that only 13 percent were for foreign language journals.

The language barrier presents itself entirely to firms who wish to market their products in other countries. British industry, in particular, has in recent decades often been criticized for its assumption (设想) that foreign buyers will be happy to communicate in English, and that awareness of other languages is not therefore a matter to be considered first. In the 1960s, over two-thirds of British firms dealing with non-English-speaking customers were using English for outgoing letters; many had their sales language only in English; and as many as 40 percent employed no one who was able to communicate in the customer's languages. A similar problem was identified in other English-speaking countries, especially the USA, Australia and New Zealand. And non-English speaking countries were by no means free from the same problem--although the widespread use of English as an alternative (可替换的) language made them a bit more able to communicate with other countries.

The criticism and publicity given to this problem since the 1960s seems to have greatly improved the situation. Industrial training projects have promoted an increase in language and cultural awareness. Many firms now have their own translation services. Some firms run part-time language courses in the languages of the countries with which they are most involved; some produce their own technical glossaries (词汇表), to ensure consistency (一致性) when material is being translated. It is now much more readily accepted that marketing efforts can be delayed, damaged or ruined by a failure to take the language needs of the customer into consideration.

50. Communication problems may come to the attention of the public when ______.

A. somebody has died

B. a serious traffic accident has happened

C. serious results have been caused

D. people have trouble in travelling

51. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “remedy” in Paragraph 2?

A. doctor

B. mushroom

C. poison

D. treatment

52. What can we infer about American doctors from the case of the poisonous mushrooms?

A. They probably only read reports written in English.

B. They hadn’t read that report of the treatment.

C. They didn’t know how to treat such a case.

D. They were unable to get reports written in other languages.

53. Firms of English-speaking countries use English only when marketing their products because ______.

A. English is their official language

B. they don’t know their products will be sold abroad

C. people in their countries don’t know other languages

D. they think foreign customers will be happy when English is used

54. Which of the following ways has been used by the British companies to solve the problem of language barrier since the 1960s?

A. Employing foreign workers.

B. Setting up their own translation services.

C. Providing English training for foreign customers.

D. Stopping exporting goods to foreign countries.

D

My parents lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s and I heard stories from both of them about how their lives changed because of it. The same was true of my in-laws whose lives were also affected negatively. For example, my husband’s grandfather owned a factory. Owi ng to the stock (证券) market crash, he lost the factory and went back to work in the very factory he’d once owned. He could no longer afford to send my father-in-law to college. My father-in-law worked full time as a pipe fitter and went to school part-time to earn his degree, which took seven years.

Somehow, my husband and I never dreamed that we would live through anything similar. However, as they say, history often repeats itself. In 1929, the stock market crashed in the month of October. The same thing happened in 2008. My husband, who had invested (投资) all our money in the market, was in a state of shock. Each day the news was more terrible.

“We’ve lost more than half of our wealth,” he told me.

I just stared at him. “How can that be?”

“I thought we had good, solid investments, but it seems I was wrong.”

“Well, we do have pensions (抚恤金),” I said. “Hopefully, they won’t be affected. Since we have never lived a high lifestyle to begin with, I don’t think we have to worry.”

“I did hope to leave our children and grandchildren a generous inheritance(遗产),”my husband said. He shook his head in disbelief.

“We’ll still be able to give gifts. Love is the most important gift anyway.” Our children are grown and we always try to be generous to them and our grandchildren.

“It just won’t be the same.”

“The world is always changing,” I said. “You never know what will happen. The main thing is not to get discouraged. As long as we have our health and can afford the necessities of life, there’s no reason to be upset. When you have your health, you can always earn more money.”

I hugged my husband and he kissed me in return.

“I guess you’re right,” he agreed. “We love each other. We have our health and enough money to live on comfortably. That’s all that matters.”

We had to move out of our house into an apartment. Since few people could afford a house in those hard days, we decided to offer it for considerably less than it would normally be worth. Even so, several buyers changed their mind days before closing. But finally, our home was sold.

As we shook hands with the new owners, I told them how fortunate they were.

“Not only are you getting a bargain in the price, but this house has good luck. We bought the house from a family who lived in it for nine years. They were a happy family, a husband, wife and five children. It was a cheerful house and we had a good feeling about it. We raised our children here as well.”

“That’s good to hear,” the young woman said with a smile. “We have two young children ourselves. And I believe in luck too.”

We nodded our heads in agreement, understanding each other.

“You’ll live only six houses from the best primary school in the town and your children won’t even have to cross a street,” I said. “Our children used to come home each day and have lunch with me.”

“We like the woods in the back,” the young man told us. “We’re going to plant a large garden in the backyard.”

They seemed so young and happy and full of plans. My husband and I had to smile. At least some good was coming out of the economic difficulty. We no longer needed a house. It was good to know that another young family would now be living in what had been a happy, loving home for us. Also, the house needed work that we no longer had the energy to perform.

These may be tough times economically, but as for me, I intend to look forward, not back. As Shakespeare said in Macbeth, “what’s done is done and cannot be undone.” It’s the present and future that matter. We can learn from our mistakes and make our lives better.

55. In the first paragraph, the author described her husband’s family in order to tell us ______.

A. economic difficulty can change a family’s lifestyle

B. people have to sell their factories when the stock market crashes

C. everything can happen in today’s world

D. my husband’s family suffered a lot in the 1930s

56. What happened to the author’s family in 2008?

A. Her husband invested all their money in the stock market.

B. They had to live on pensions.

C. They had to sell their house.

D. They got most of their money lost in the stock market.

57. The author’s attitude towards her husband after hearing the bad news can be described as ______.

A. angry but supportive

B. sincere and encouraging

C. kind and sympathetic

D. forgiving but casual

58. In the author’s opinion what matters in life is ______.

A. wealth and health

B. health and love

C. money and work

D. house and children

第二节:下面文章中有5处(第61—65题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。

A. Raise children with multiple (多种的) languages

B. Adults prefer basic grammar points

C. Children learn languages faster

D. Learn two languages at the same time

E. Learn a language as an adult

F. Learn your native language

Language learning for young children

If you’ve ever tried to learn a second language as an adult, you probably know that it isn’t easy. You have to study hard. Cards, papers, hours of listening and speaking practice are a minimum (最低限度) for adult language learners. For children, however, learning a language, is much easier.

61. ______

Do you remember the process of learning your native language? As a baby, you began to learn your native language before you began to form long-term memories. You first began to understand the spoken language. After that, you started repeating what you heard and making sounds that still had no meaning. Soon you learned to pronounce words in your native language. As time went by, you learned more words and began to speak with correct grammar. All this happened to you without thinking.

62. ______

If you have ever taken language classes as an adult, you are probably well aware that language learning becomes much more difficult as you age. Adults rarely pick up a language without thinking. You have to study hard to learn grammar rules and practice your pronunciation and listening skills as much as you possibly can. Many adults desire to be able to learn a language as easily as children can, but, unfortunately, the days of easy language learning are over for most of them.

63. ______

Why is language learning so much easier for children than it is for adults? It turns out that this question still doesn’t have a clear scientific answer. When it comes to human behavior, language is one of the most strange aspects of our lives. It’s clear that there is a period during childhood that is good for learning languages, and that it becomes more difficult afterwards. The areas of the brain that rule language learning become much less active as we age. What is understood is that children learn not only their native language but also foreign languages much faster than adults.

64. ______

Children who grow up in an environment where multiple languages are spoken can easily pick up different languages, sometimes even without realizing that they are different languages. For example, children whose parents speak two different languages will learn to speak to Mom in one way and to Dad in a different way, but they do not understand these are two different languages. According to a study, these children will learn both languages easily and won’t even have a preference for one or the other.

65. ______

So what’s the suggestion for parenting? If you want your children to speak more than one language, no advice is more important than this start early! The earlier children start learning a second or foreign language, the easier it will be for them to learn that language. Sending small

children to bilingual (双语) schools is one way to put them on the path towards being successful people who speak multiple languages. But remember, no matter how early children start learning a language, they can lose their language ability if they don’t continue to use and practice the language as they grow. Language is like anything else if you don’t use it, you lose it!

第二节. 书面表达

A possible version

Dear Sir,

It is said that our local government is going to move our school to the suburb. I am now writing to express my opinion that it is more advisable to keep the school where it is.

For one thing, it is more convenient for both students and teachers to get to the present school which is located in the center of the city. If it is moved to the suburb, it surely will bring students, especially their parents, much trouble.

For another, as a school with a history of one hundred years, her value mainly lies in the

signs left by time. We can put up new buildings and plant new trees, but we cannot rebuild such reminders of memory.

Therefore, I suggest the school not be moved.

2019年浙江省温州市高考英语模拟试卷(2月份)-解析版

2019年浙江省温州市高考英语模拟试卷(2月份) 一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分) A ‘Turtle time!,loudly called out by one of my newly-found friends, meant the beginning of either a morning or afternoon shift at Turtle Camp in Nusa Penida,Indonesia.Upon arrival at the project each day,we would look eagerly for our names on the whiteboard to see which task we would be undertaking.Would it be the highly desirable ‘turtle feeding',the pretty fun ‘tank cleaning',the exciting ‘medicine administering' or the less appealing ‘fish cutting'?Fine in theory but not when every fly in Indonesia decides to crowd onto these dead fish while you're cutting! Life at the turtle project was fun because twice a day we got to hang out with sea turtles.By ‘hang out',I obviously meant ‘work',as we were on shift, but it certainly didn't feel like work.Another fun thing was getting to know the other volunteers! With volunteers from all over the world,it was just common to hear Finnish being spoken,Australian slang mixed with French expressions and Swedes making plans to visit newly-found friends in the USA.Of course, not all the time at Turtle Camp was consumed by volunteering.Scheduled activities included a trip to Crystal Bay,a beautiful paradise for swimming and sunbathing,an awesome beach bonfire complete with a beautiful sunset as well as our local coworkers showing off their guitar playing and singing skills. Our time at Turtle Camp was capped off by setting free two of our turtles into the sea to begin their journey as independent turtles! Hopefully, the love and care provided at the turtle project would ensure that these turtles had a greater chance of survival in the big, wide and scary ocean. 1.Which task is less fun to the volunteers at Turtle Camp?______ A. Turtle feeding. B. Tank cleaning. C. Medicine Administering. D. Fish Cutting. 2.What does the underlined sentence imply?______ A. The volunteering was a challenge. B. The time at the camp was difficult. C. The work at the project was a delight. D. Communication was time-consuming. 3.When setting free the two turtles, the volunteers felt a sense of ______ . A. achievement B. belonging C. loss D. independence B If you're looking at livable cities as inspiration for your holiday, you'll miss out on many great tourist destinations.According to Mercer's 2018 Quality of Living Survey,Moscow ranks 167 and Beijing only 119,yet both provide ample visitor pleasures.Meanwhile high-ranked cities such as Kobe (神户)or Seattle may be easy places to live in,but offer only passing interest to tourists. In truth, many of the world's most livable cities are a little dull. The world isn't rushing to visit Canberra or Montreal. In fact, none of the world's 10 most visited cities appear in Mercer's top 20.Clearly,considerations that create enjoyable holiday destinations differ from those that make cities fine places to live in. This should be no surprise, since livability lists aren't concerned with tourists or even local residents but rather expats(侨民).Mercer, for example,is a British-based professional service firm whose lists supply multinationals with human resources information about where to locate their businesses."The success of foreign business is influenced by issues such as ease of travel and communication, personal safety, and access to public services, says Slagin Parakatil, who oversees Mercer's research. In short,Mercer considers whether cities are attractive to business and investment, and have good schools, hospitals and housing while such factors seldom influence tourists. Still,Mercer's Quality of Living Survey has its uses for tourists, since it also looks at natural and cultural environments and recreation. It ranks public transport and infrastructure(基础设施)particularly highly,a consideration shared by the World Economic Forum in reports on tourism and travel competitiveness. This includes hotels,rental-cars and even ATM availability, all of which make a destination friendly to expats and visitors alike. 4.What do we know about livable cities?______ A. They hardly offer tourist passing interest. B. They may not be good tourist destinations. C. They can arouse the inspiration of visitors. D. They are usually highly ranked by tourists. 5.What is Mercer more concerned about when ranking livable cities?______ A. Tourist attractions. B. ATM availability. C. Business-friendliness. D. Local residents. 6.Why does the writer use Mercer's Quality of Living Survey?______ A. To make his view convincing. B. To compare those livable cities. C. To better understand the survey. D. To support the British-based firm. C Every day around the world, thousands of people with little to no scholarly training in art history walk into museums. They may or may not read notice boards that share relevant information of the artworks or artists.Imagine, before being permitted to direct their eyeballs to the art on the walls, museum visitors were required to read a 15- or 20-page introduction to each piece or each artist. How many people would go to museums if that were the case? Yet this seems to be the expectation when it comes to reading classic literature.Classic novels typically come with 15- or 20-page introductions, which often include spoilers, assuming that readers do not come to classic books to discover,be absorbed in,and be surprised by the story world. Also, apparently,we mustn't read classics alone, without experts guiding our experiences. However, classic literature is in a unique position to show us that we're not alone in our pains and joys.By taking us out of our time, classic books free us to see beyond the set of beliefs we stick to and to connect human experiences that remain alive across time and place. What could be more grounding, more comforting, than seeing ourselves in the battles, longings, and pleasures that have played out across hundreds, thousands of years of human history? Our personal engagement is the first step of a longer journey of discovery that deepens our knowledge and understanding of ourselves and our world. We may,for example, feel for Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter though we despair of the world she lived in. While we're letting go of things, let's stop worrying about understanding everything. We can't.It will be fun if we embrace curiosity, the pleasure of working out a mystery, and our common relationships as humans. We can feel, for example, the power of self-sacrifice in Charles Dickens'A Tale of Two Cities even when we lack full understanding of the cultural references and language. 7.Most museum goers ______ . A. enjoy reading notice boards B. understand the artworks well C. lack professional art knowledge D. share common interest in artworks 8.What can the spoilers in Para.2 possibly be ?______ A. Story writers. B. Readers' expectations. C. Guiding experts. D. Plots given away in advance. 9.What prevents readers enjoying reading classics?______ A. Showing curiosity about the writers. B. Letting go of things.
