A famous Renoir had been stolen from a museum. Detective Earl Blackman was to work on the case.

Everyone was in the dark before an art professor came to point out the false picture. So the museum even didn‘t know when the picture had been stolen. Thousands of people came to visit the museum every day. After long work, some art students were focused on.

The five students who had made copies of the Renoir during the last six months were asked to bring their copies to the museum. The fifth student said she had sold her copy, which was later proved to be the one in the museum. She, however, could only remember the buyer was a man with the little finger on his left hand missing.

Blackman went back and stayed in his office looking at all the pictures of known thieves. No success.

The next afternoon, at about closing time, Blackman went to the museum to ask if the cleaning men were in the museum after everyone else had left. The director told him they had no cleaning man but six cleaning women.

As the detective left the director‘s office, he saw five cleaning women. He stopped one and asked about her work. Then came the sixth cleaning woman. ―Have a nice day!‖ may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says ―Have a nice day‖ with a smile, I know she sin cerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.

―Have a nice day. Next!‖ This version(说法) of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone(腔调)with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyo ne else‘s is the management‘s attempt to increase business.

The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it shows the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don‘t know what to say. ―Oh, you just had a tooth out? I‘m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.‖

The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says ―Have a nice day‖ to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you d on‘t know has tried to be nice to you.

Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it‘s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don‘t care all that much. While the expression may not o ften be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.

63. How does the author understand Maxie‘s words?

A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.

B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.

C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.

D. Maxie really worries about the author‘s security.

64. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. The salesgirl is rude.

B. The salesgirl is bored.

C. The salesgirl cares about me.

D. The salesgirl says the words as a routine.

65. According to the last paragraph, people say ―Have a nice day‖ __________.

A. sincerely

B. as thanks

C. as a habit

D. encouragingly

56. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Have a Nice Day ---- a Social Custom

B. Have a Nice Day ---- a Pleasant Gesture

C. Have a Nice Day ---- a Heart-warming Greeting

D. Have a Nice Day ---- a Polite Ending of a Conversation

D

When other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled (挣扎)to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks to win a highly competitive scholarship (奖学金) and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, ―Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story‖, shown in late April.

Liz Murray, a 22-year-old American girl, has been writing a real-life story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drug-addicted (吸毒) parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.

Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homeless. At night, she lived on the streets. ―What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society,‖ she wrote in her book Breaking Night.

She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that come easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that ―next to nothing could hold me down‖. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. ―I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time.‖

Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is ―as simple as making a decision‖.

67. In which order did the following things happen to Liz?

a. Her mother died of AIDS.

b. She worked at a petrol station.

c. She got admitted into Harvar

d.

d. The movie about her life was put on.

e. She had trouble finding a place to sleep.

A. b, a, e, c, d

B. a, b, c, e, d

C. e, d, b, a, c

D. b, e, a, d, c

68. The main idea of the passage is ________.

A. how Liz managed to enter Harvard University

B. what a hard time Liz had in her childhood

C. why Liz loved her parents so much

D. how Liz struggled to change her life

69. What actually made her go towards her goal?

A. Envy and encouragement.

B. Willpower and determination.

A. she had little experience of social life

B. she needed to travel more around the world

C. she would do something for her own life

D. she could hardly understand the society

第二卷(非选择题,计35分)

第四部分:(共两节,满分15分)

第一节任务型阅读 (共10小题, 每题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文后71~80的空格里填上适当的单词。(每空1词)Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? If you answered more happy, then you were right, based on a study published two years ago. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.

The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.

The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.

The researchers also considered possible influence like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for all that they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

Happiness is not the only thing that apparently improves with age. In a study published this year, people in their eighties reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep.

Researchers surveyed more than 150,000 American adults. The study, led by Michael Grander at the University of Pennsylvania, appeared in the journal Sleep.

The original goal was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep

problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.

书面表达

Recently our school has conducted a survey about why senior school students go to school. The results of the survey are as follows.

As we can see, most of the students surveyed, about 60%, go to school in order to go to college. About 19% of them wish to change their present situation by working hard at school, while 9% of them study so as to make contributions to society in the future. Only a small number of the students, about 5%, say that they are forced to learn things that they don‘t like by their parents and teachers. And another 7% of the students go to school for other reasons.

As for me, I am encouraged by my dream of going to a key university and the idea of living a better life in the future. I believe I will do what I can and my dream will come true in three years‘ time.
