The English Fashion recently asked people about their wonderful ideas and plans about things they could do. The magazine asked people the following question: If you had all the money you wanted, what would you like to do? About 500 people answered the survey question.

Almost half (49%) of the people in the survey said they would buy material (物质的) things such as a bigger house or a better car. One fifth (20%) of the people said they would travel to interesting or famous places. 17% answered that they would give money to someone else. They would donate money to a charity or to those poor families. More than half of the rest of the people (about 10%) said they would give money to help medical research. All the other people in the survey said they would save money in the bank. They said they didn’t know what they would like to do right now, but perhaps in a few years they would find a good use for the money.

“Lots of people think that if they buy better things, they will feel happier,” said Dr. Wilson, a sociologist at City University. “However,” she said, “this feeling will not last long. After a while, they won’t be satisfied with them any longer.” Dr. Wilson thinks the happiest people are those who want to make a change in people’s lives that will last into the future. She thinks those people who give money to someone else or to medical research are thinking beyond themselves and their own needs at the moment. If they had all the money they wanted, they would make a difference in the world.

The village of Roanoke was one of the first English colonies(殖民地) in America. However, this village wasn’t a successful one. The settlers (移民) were not well prepared. They needed enough supplies(供应品). So their head, John White went to England for supplies. Because of the war, he didn’t return until three years later. But when he returned, he found the place a ghost town. Nobody was there to meet him, and all houses couldn’t be found. The only clue was a word on a post (柱子), “Croatoan”.

Where had the settlers gone? Here are some popular ideas:

◆All the settlers on Roanoke Island died of a disease.

It is true that the British had brought over some diseases. However, there were no bodies

found and the houses had gone, too.

◆ The village was hit by a terrible storm.

A storm could have washed away the people and the houses. But the problem is that the post was still there.

◆The people decided to leave Roanoke Island.

Croatoan, which was on the post, was the name of an island in the area. It is possible that the settlers decided to live on that island.

◆ The settlers were killed by the Native Americans (土著美洲人).

六. 任务型阅读(共5小题,计10分)

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成下列各题。

How did people travel without maps? Well, it was quite easy to use natural signs like mountains and rivers if you were travelling on foot or riding a horse. People took small boats down rivers and followed coastlines. And it was much more logical (合理的) to use time, not distance, to measure (计量) journeys: the next village is a three-hour ride, for example.

In fact, in the earliest maps, people drew stars. It was very easy to see the night sky and use it for navigation (航行). The sky was a lot clearer than today. When towns and cities were built, people drew road maps that gave correct distances and directions.

The London Underground was opened in 1863 and it also used a road map style. But a man called Henry Beck realized that travelling by train wasn’t the same as driving your car across London. Passengers only needed to know which stations to change at. His new design for the underground map wasn’t very popular with the underground companies at first. But passengers loved it and in 1933, 700,000 copies were printed.

These days, of course, you can ride a bike, drive a car or go through a forest and know where you are exactly, using GPS. It’s really difficult to get lost!
