Shark Attack!

Craig Rogers was sitting on his surfboard, scanning the distance for his next wave, when his board suddenly stopped moving. He looked down and was terrified to see a great white shark biting the front of his board. ―I could have touched its eye with my elbow,‖ says Craig. The shark had surfaced so quietly that he hadn't heard a thing.

In his horror and confusion,he waved his arms and accidentally cut two of his fingers on the shark's teeth. He then slid off the opposite side of his surfboard into the water. Then然后, with Craig in the water and blood flowing from his fingers, the five-meter-long shark simply swam away, (第1题答案出处)disappearing into the water below.

Although sharks are often categorized as killers that hunt and eat as many humans as they can, this is factually inaccurate. Sharks very rarely kill humans. A person has a greater chance of being struck by lightning or drowning in a bath than of being killed by a shark. Only 74 people have been reported killed by great whites in the last century. But great white sharks can reach six meters in length and weigh 2,200 kilograms or more. With frightening jaws that can hold up to 3,000 teeth arranged in several rows, they could very easily kill and eat a helpless human in the water. Why is it, then, that most people survive attacks by great whites? Shark researchers are trying to comprehend the reasons that allow people to escape without being eaten.

The most common explanation is that great whites don't see well. It has been thought that they mistake people for把人错当成the seals or sea lions which make up a large part of their diet(第3、4题答案出处). There is reason to doubt this有理由去怀疑,however. Recent information shows that great whites can actually see very well. 事实上,大白鲨能看得非常清楚(第5题答案出处)Also, when attacking seals, great whites shoot up to the surface and bite with great force. When approaching humans, however, they most often move in slowly and bite less hard. They soon discover that humans are not a high —fat meal. ―They spit us out because we're too bony,‖ says Aidan Martin, director of Reef Quest Center for Shark Research.

Shark researchers like Martin hypothesize that great whites are actually curious animals that like to investigate things. It's possible that they use their bite not only to kill and eat, but also to gather information. Although such an experience is unlucky for people like Craig Rogers, when sharks bite surfboards or other objects or people, they are likely just trying to learn what they are. 练习:

C1. After Craig Rogers fell into the water, the shark_________.--------细节类A) bit his surfboard B) bit his fingers C) swam away D) attacked him

When Our Eyes Serve Our Stomach

Our senses aren’t just delivering strict view of what’s going on in the world;they’re affected by what’s going on in our heads. A new study finds that hungry 饥饿的people see food-related与食物相关的words more clearly 清晰地,真切地than people who’ve just eaten.

Psychologists have known for decades that what’s going on,inside our head affects our senses. For example, poorer children think coins are larger than they are, and hungry people think pictures of food are brighter. Remi Radel of University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis,France,wanted to investigate how this happens. Does it happen right away as the brain receives signals from the eyes or a little later as the brain’s high-level thinking processes get involved.

Radel recruited 42 students with a normal body mass index. On the day of his or her test, each student was told to arrive at the lab at noon after three or four hours of not eating. Then they were told there was a delay. Some were told to come back in 10 minutes; others were given an hour to get lunch first. So half the students were hungry when they did the experiment and the other half had just eaten.

For the experiment, the participant looked at a computer screen. One by one, 80 words flashed on the screen for about l/300th of a second 三百分之一秒each. They flashed

at so small a size that the students could only consciously有意识的perceive感知.(第4题答案出处1)A quarter of the words were food-related. After each word, each person was asked how bright the word was and asked to choose which of two words they’d seen — a food-related word like cake or a neutral word like boat. Each word appeared 出现too briefly短暂地for the participant to really read it.(第4题答案出处2)

Hungry people saw the food-related words as brighter and were better at identifying food- related words. Because the word appeared too quickly for them to be reliably seen, this means that the difference is in perception ,not in thinking processes, Radel says.

―This is something great to me. Humans can really perceive what they need or what they strive for争取(第5题答案出处). From the experiment, I know that our brain can really be at the disposal 支配of our motives 动机and needs,‖ Radel says.(第3题答案出处)

C1. What does the new study mentioned in Paragraph 1 find? A Hungry people see every word more clearly than ordinary people.B Hungry people are always thinking of food-related words.C Hungry people are more sensitive敏感的to food-related words than stomach-full people吃饱的人.D Hungry people do not have lower-level of thinking process. clearly、sensitive意思相近,people who’ve just eaten=stomach-full people。

B2.Why was there a delay on the day of the experiment? A Because hungry people needed time to fill their stomach.B Because Radel wanted to create two groups of testees, hungry and non-hungry. C Because noon was not the right time for any experiment.D Because Radel needed time to select participants in terms of body mass index.

C3.What does the writer want to tell us? A Human’s senses aren’t just delivering a strict view of what’s going on in the world.B What's perceived by our senses affects our way of thinking.C Human brains can really be at the disposal of our motives and needs.D Thinking processes guarantee the normal functions of our senses.

A4.What did the results of the experiment indicate?------推断类

A 80 words flashed on the screen too fast太快for the participant参与者to intentionally有意的perceive感知.

B Hungry people were better at identifying neutral words.

C People who had just仅仅eaten were better at identifying food-related words.

D The participants could barely仅仅perceive what they needed or what they strived for.

D5. What can we infer from the passage? A 42 participants are too small a number for a serious investigation.B An experiment with hungry and non-hungry participants is not reliable.C Our thinking processes are independent of our senses.D Humans can perceive what they need without没有involving陷入high-level 高级的thinking思考processes过程.

第十九篇Musical音乐的Robot机器人Companion伴侣Enhances提升Listener听众Experience体验Shimi, a musical companion developed开发by Georgia Tech’s技术学院Center中心for Music Technology技术, recommends songs, dances to the beat and keeps the music pumping based on基于listener feedback反馈. (第4题答案出处)The smartphone-enabled, one-foot-tall robot(第1题答案出处1)is billed as an interactive互动的―musical friend‖.(第3题答案出题1)

―Shimi is designed to change the way that people enjoy and think about their music,‖ said Professor Gil Weinberg, the robot’s creator. He will unveil the robot at the June 27th Google I/O conference in San Francisco. A band of three Shimi robots will perform for guests, dancing in sync with music created in the lab and composed according to its movements.

Shimi is essentially a docking station with a ―brain‖ powered by an Android phone. Once docked, the robot gains the sensing and musical generation capabilities of the user’s mobile device. In other words, if there’s an ―app‖ for that, Shimi is ready. For instance, by using the phone’s camera and face-detecting software,Shimi can follow a listener around the room and position its ―ears‖,or speakers, for optimal sound. Another recognition feature is based on rhythm and tempo. If the user taps a beat, Shimi analyzes it, scans the phone’s musical library and immediately plays the song that best最好的matches(第2题答案出处)the suggestion. Once the music starts,Shimi dances to the rhythm.

―Many people think that robots are limited by their programming instructions, said Music Technology Ph. D. candidate Mason Bre tan. ―Shimi shows us that robots can be creative and interactive. (第3题答案出题2)’’Future apps in the works will allow the user to shake their head in disagreement or wave a hand in the air to alert Shimi t o skip to the next song or increase/decrease the volume. The robot will also h ave the capability to recommend new music based on the user’s song choices and provide feedback on the music play list.

Weinberg hopes other developers will be inspired to create more apps to expand Shimi’s creative and interactive capabilities. ―I believe that our center is ahead of a revolution that will see more robots in homes.‖ Weinberg said.

Weinberg is in the process of commercializing Shimi through an exclusive licensing agreement with Georgia Tech. Weinberg hopes to make the robot available to consumers by the 2013 holiday season. ―If robots are going to arrive in homes, we think that they will be this kind of machines--small, entertaining and fun,(第5题答案出处)Weinberg said. ―They will enhance your life and pave the way for more intelligent service rob ots in our lives.‖本文的标题信息量很大,完全可以猜到全文将以“音乐机器人的特点,以及它们如何服务人类”的主线进行论述。练习:

D2. What does Shimi do if the user taps a beat? A It stores the beat in the musical library.B It transmits the beat to the docking station.C It positions its speakers for optimal sound.D It selects a perfectly完美的-matched匹配的song and plays it in sync with that beat.

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few - for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. Moreover, a great many relationships come under the blanket term "friendship". In all cases, two people like each other and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their mutual interest vary enormously. Initially, much depends on how people meet, and on favourable first impressions. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, physical attractiveness economic and social status, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to relate to people when there is a marked difference in age and background. On a more immediate level, we are sensitive to actual behaviour, facial expression, and tone of voice. Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than mere acquaintances. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may transmit the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty in making friends. A friendly gaze with the wrong facial expression can turn into an aggressive stare, and nervousness may be misread as hostility. People who do not

题目中若出现must、only、all、always等时,答案一般不会是对的。

Survey Finds Many Women Misinformed about Cancer Sixty-three percent of American women think that if there's no family history of cancer, you’re not likely to develop the disease,a new survey found. In fact, most people who develop cancer have no family history of cancer, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists(ACOG)(美国妇产科医师学 会),which sponsored the survey. “Too many women are dying from cancer,”Dr. Douglas W. Laube,ACOG's immediate past president, said during a Friday teleconference. “An estimated 200,070women will die in the U. S. this year, and over 600,078 women will be diagnosed with cancer,The results of this survey found a worrisome(令人担忧的)gap in women’s know ledge about cancer.” Based on the findings. ACOG is increasing its efforts to educate women about cancer and the need for regular screening tests. Although the survey found many misconceptions(错误观点)about cancer,76 percent of women surveyed did say they feel knowledgeable about how they can reduce their risk of the disease. However, only 52 percent said they were doing enough to reduce that risk. And 10 percent said they hadn't done anything in the past year to lower their risk. Seventeen percent said they wouldn’t ch ange their lifestyles, even if changes would lower their cancer risk.

School Lunch Research has shown that over half the children in Britain who take their own lunches to school do not eat properly in the middle of the day.In Britain schools have to provide meals at lunchtime.Children can choose to bring their own food or have lunch at the school canteen. One shocking finding of this research is that school meals are much healthier than lunches prepared by parents. There are strict standards for the preparation of school meals, which have to include one portion of fruit and one of vegetables,as well as meat,a dairy item and starchy food like bread or pasta.Lunchboxes examined by researchers contained sweet drinks, crisps and chocolate bars.Children consume twice as much sugar as they should at lunch time. The research will provide a better understanding of why the percentage of overweight students in Britain has increased in the last decade.Unfortunately, the government cannot criticise parents, but it can remind them of the nutritional value of milk, fruit and vegetables.Small changes in their children’s diet can_affect their future health.Children can easily develop bad eating_habits at this age,and parents are the only ones who can prevent it.A Powerful Influence There can be no doubt at all that the Internet has made a huge difference1to our lives.Parents are worried that children spend too much time playing on the Internet, hardly ever doing anything else in their spare time.Naturally, parents are curious to find out why the Internet is so attractive, and they want to know if it can be harmful for their children.Should parents worry if their children are spending that much time staring at their computers? Obviously,if children are bent over their computers for hours, absorbed in some game, instead of doing their homework, then something is wrong.Parents and children could decide how much use the child should_make of the Internet, and the child should give his or her word that it won’t interfere with homework. If the child is not holding to this arrangement, the parent can take more drastic steps dealing with a child’s use of the Internet is not much different from negotiating any other sort of bargain about behaviour.Any parent who is_seriously alarmed about a child’s behaviour should make an appointment to discuss the matter with a teacher.Spending time in front of the screen does not necessarily affect a child’s performance at school.Even if a child is absolutely crazy about using the Internet,he or she is probably just going through a phase, and in a few months there will be something else to worry about! The Old Gate In the Middle Ages the vast majority of European cities had walls around them. This was partly for defensive reasons but another factor was the need to keep out anyone regarded as undesirable, like people with contagious diseases. The Old City of London gates were all demolished by the end of the 18th century. The last of London’s gates was removed a century ago,but by a stroke of luck,it was never destroyed. This gate is,in actual fact, not called a gate at all;its name is Temple Bar,and it marked the boundary between the Old City of London and Westminster. In 1878the Council of London took the Bar down, numbered the stones and put the gate in storage because its design was unfashionable it was expensive to maintain and it was blocking the traffic. The Temple Bar Trust was set up in the 1970’s with the intention of returning the gate home. The aim of the Trust is the preservation of the nation’s architectural heritage.Transporting the gate will mean physically pulling it down, stone by stone, removing and rebuilding it near St Paul’s Cathedral. Most of the facade of the gate will probably be replaced, though there is a good chance that the basic structure will be sound. The hardest job of all, however, will be to recreate the statues of the monarchs that once stood on top of the gate.Family History In an age when technology is developing faster than ever before, many people are being attracted to the idea of looking back into the past. One way they can do this is by investigating their own family history. They can try to find out more about where their families came from and what they did. This is now a fast-growing hobby, especially in countries with a fairly short history, like Australia and the United States. It is one thing to spend some time going through a book on family history and to take the decision to investigate your own family’s past.It is quite another to carry out the research work successfully. It is easy to set about it in a disorganized way and_cause yourself many problems which could have been avoided with a little forward planning. If your own family stories tell you that you are connected with a famous character, whether hero or criminal,do not let this idea take over your research.Just treat it as an interesting possibility.A simple system for collecting and storing your information will be adequate to start with;a more complex one may only get in your way.The most important thing, though,is to get started.Who knows what you might find? Helen and Martin With a thoughtful sigh,Helen turned away from the window and walked back to her favourite armchair.Would her brother never arrive? For a brief moment, she wondered if she really cared that much. Over the years Helen had given up waiting for Martin to take an interest in her.Her feelings for him had gradually weakened until now,as she sat waiting for him,she experienced no more than a sister’s curiosity to see what had become of her brother. Almost without warning,Martin had lost his job with a busy publishing company after spending the last eight years in New York as a key figure in the US office.Somehow the two of them hadn’t bothered to keep in touch and, left alone,Helen had slowly found
