阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C,D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

A

Nanotechnology is a fashionable word these days. The name “nano”(纳米) comes from the size of molecules, which are measured in nanometers—or one billionth of a meter. Through operating the atoms and molecules, scientists can change the nature of common materials and even create new materials that have new properties.

But scientists are concerned about its possible risks to our daily lives.

Clothing merchants claim their nano-cloth keeps our bodies warmer in winter, saving us from needing thick coats. Vitamin companies boast their nano-pills are easier to absorb. Home decoration companies suggest you use their nano-paint, which has no smell, is waterproof, and free from poisonous substances.

Nanomaterials are making our lives better, its creators say. The US National Science Foundation predicts nanotechnology research will grow into a US $-trillion industry over the next 10 years.

But relatively little is known about the potential health and environmental effects of the tiny particles. Just atoms wide, they are small enough to penetrate cells easily in l ungs, brains and other organs. US best-seller “Prey”,written by Michael Crichton, paints a doomsday in which a group of tiny nanomachines escapes the lab and threatens to take control of humanity.

Studies have shown that some nanoparticles can be poisonous to animal cells. There are fears that exposure can cause breathing problems, since nanoparticles could be taken in through the nose, causing unknown problems to brain cells. Scientists also fear that nanoparticles placed on the skin could damage DNA. “No one knows, and that’s the problem,”said Pat Mooney, director of the ETC Group. “People are rubbing them on the skin as sunscreens and as cosmetics.”

Mooney’s group is calling for products such as sunscreen, that are directly absorbed into the body to be_taken_off_the_shelf until they’re proved safe. 46.What do you think is nanotechnology is?

A. It is a fashionable technology that operates the atoms and molecules.

B. It is a fashionable technology that can be used to create DNA.

C. It is a fashionable technology that is created by a scientist named Nano.

D. It is a fashionable technology that combines chemistry with physics.

47.What benefits can nanotechnology bring to us except________.

A. It can allow us to be free from thick coats by wearing clothes made of nano-cloth.

B. It can allow us to create more new materials to meet the need of our modern society.

C. It can help us to take control of the doomsday.

D. It can help us to decorate our homes more environmentally friendly.

48.Studies have made it clear that________.

A. exposure to nanoparticles can damage DNA

B. rubbing nano cosmetics on the skin can help control skin diseases

C. all nanoparticles can’t be poisonous to animal cells

D. the nanoparticles have bad effects on health and environment

49.What the underlined part “be taken off the shelf” in the last paragraph mean?

A. Mooney’s group recommends that consumers to buy nano products such as sunscreen on the shelf.

B. Mooney’s group suggests that nano products such as sunscreen win a great success on the shelf.

C. Mooney’s group suggests nano products such as sunscreen be sold on shelf instead of on the street.

D. Mooney’s group suggests nano products such as sunscreen be proved safe before they are sold.

My grandparents actively practiced simplicity. They both grew up in very large families and lived through the Great Depression. Saving for a rainy day and avoiding superfluous consumption were their life philosophy. Rather than seeking fulfillment through material items, they chose to spend really simple life together, with family and in nature.

Over the years my grandparents noticed dramatic changes in their community. Every year more farmland was destroyed to build larger and larger homes. As real

estate prices rose, many of their neighbors sold their little homes and land. Soon theirs was the only small house on the block, surrounded by a sea of mansions. My grandparents built and lived in a small 600-square-foot cottage for most of their adult lives. Lots of family members encouraged my grandparents to expand their little old house. But they didn’t want a bigger one. They loved their little house and were content with what they had.

My grandparents avoided a consumptive (浪费的) lifestyle by painting and repairing the house themselves. They lived in a small home, but had a huge garden. They loved gardening and planting because it reduced their grocery bill, improved their health, and gave them an excuse to be outside. They also reused and recycled everything. For instance, they had driven the same car for over 15 years and didn't buy a new one until the old Chevrolet was worn out.

From my grandparents, I learned an important lesson: it is possible to live a simple and fulfilling life. My grandparents taught me that living a simple life isn't about self-deprivation. Instead,it's about giving yourself the time, freedom, and money to pursue your dreams.Becoming debt free, downsizing to a smaller home, and going car-lite(减少用车频率)are a few ways to take control of your life and start pursuing your dreams.

54.The community's changes include all the following EXCEPT that________.

A. people built more farmland

B. the neighbors sold their houses

C. the houses became more expensive

D. many mansions were built there

55.The author's grandparents didn't expand their house because________.

A. they didn't accept the family members' advice

B. their house was really new and large enough

C. they were satisfied with the house they lived in

D. they were too old to do any house-building job

56.Which of the following is a consumptive lifestyle in the author's grandparents' opinion?

A. Repairing the house themselves.

B. Planting vegetables in the garden.

C. Reusing and recycling things.

D. Changing cars in a short time.

57.The author thinks his grandparents' lifestyle is________.

A. unacceptable

B. approvable

C. unreasonable

D. understandable

D

Chicken soup has long been a comfort food for people with cold symptoms. Whether the remedy (疗法) comes from the warmth and comfort of the soup or from actual cold-fighting ingredients(成分) in the meal, it is still up for debate.

Chicken Soup: Just the Evidence

Science_has_begun_to_support_what_mothers_have_understood_for_centuries. The heat, salt, and hydration provided by chicken soup may actually fight the cold virus. Laboratory studies have shown that ingredients of chicken soup with vegetables could kill viral cells and prevent the growth of new ones. The soup may also provide an anti-inflammatory (消炎的) effect that helps reduce cold symptoms. Unfortunately, the benefits of chicken soup appear to be limited by how quickly the soup leaves the body. There is no indication that chicken soup would help in the prevention of colds, but its use as a remedy for symptoms is common. It is largely a safe remedy with no ill side effects, and scientific evidence points more in favor of its cold-fighting properties(特性) than against it.

The Downside of Chicken Soup

Evidence in support of chicken soup's antiviral properties is not yet solid enough to prove true, reliable medicinal effects. Although the evidence based on personal experiences and existing research seem to support a good effect of chicken soup, a clinical trial would be very difficult to perform. In addition, some people with food allergies (过敏性反应) or sensitivities to salt may experience ill side effects from chicken soup. Unbroken bones may also lead to a choking risk, particularly for children. However, the potential benefits of chicken soup seem to far outweigh the possible risks.

58.What does the underlined sentence suggest?

A.Mothers have long been helped by scientists to find remedies for colds.

B. Scientists have agreed for centuries with what mothers have understood.

C. People have tried chicken soup to help reduce cold symptoms since long ago.

D. Mothers know better how to deal with cold symptoms than scientists.

59.Which of the following is true about chicken soup?

A. It is particularly good for children.

B. It can prevent people from colds.

C. It is an amazing comfort food for people with colds.

D. It surely has medicinal effects on colds.

60.What's the author's opinion on chicken soup?

A. It is good for people with colds to have chicken soup.

B. Scientists have found solid evidence about the benefits of chicken soup.

C. Chicken soup can take the place of other medicines for colds.

D. People still argue whether chicken soup has effects on cold symptoms.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从下框的A-F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

A.The reasons for the problematic food situation in Britain

B.The effect of the situation on farmers

C.The variety of British food

D.The surface richness of food and questions it brings

E.The different situations at home and abroad

F.The recent reason for the huge supply of food

61.________

The long years of food shortage in Britain have suddenly given way to huge food supply.Stores and shops are crowded with food.Rationing(定量供应) has already seemed too distant to today's Britons.Even overseas suppliers have been asked to hold back deliveries.Yet,instead of joy, there is widespread uneasiness and worries. Why do food prices keep on rising, when there seems to be so much more food about? Is the surface huge amount of food only temporary,or has it come to stay?Does it mean that we need to think less now about producing more food at home?

62.________

The recent growth of food supply on the world food market has certainly been unexpectedly great, partly because two continuous big grain harvests in North America are now being followed by a third. Most of Britain's overseas suppliers of meat, too, are offering more this year and home production has also risen.

63.________

Then why is the food situation in Britain still faulty? On the one hand, the British government has gradually cut down support for food.On the other hand, the shops are overstocked with food not only because there is more food available, but also because people, frightened by high prices, are buying less of it.

64.________

Moreover, the rise in food prices at home has come at a time when world prices have begun to fall, with the result that imported food, with the exception of grain,is often cheaper than the home-produced variety. And now grain prices, too, are falling internationally.British consumers are beginning to ask why they should not be able to benefit from this trend.

65.________

The significance of these developments is not lost on farmers. The older generation have seen it all happen before.Despite the present price and market guarantees, farmers fear they are about to be squeezed between cheap food imports and a smaller home market.Present production is running quickly compared with years ago. However, farmers haven't shared any benefit from the change.

第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节( 共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C,D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

A

After too long on the Net, even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend’s

Liverpudlian accent suddenly becomes too difficult to understand after his clear words on screen; a secretary’s tone seems more rejecting than I’d imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid-hours becomes minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Week ends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.

For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose, I have done much of my work as a telecommuter. I submit(提交) articles and edit them by E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England, so much of our relationship is computer-mediated. If I desired, I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my money, love and work. In fact, at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries. I watched most of the blizzard of 96 on TV.

But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I've merged(融合) with my machines, taking data in, spitting them back out, just another node(波节) on the Net. Others on line report the same symptoms(症状). We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It's like attending an A. A. meeting in a bar with everyone holding a half-sipped drink. We have become the Net opponents' worst nightmare.

What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes and face, has becomes avoidance(逃避), a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human contact with cyber interaction, coming_back_out_of_the_cave can be quite difficult.

At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I’d never done previously. T he voices of the programs relax me, but then I'm jarred by the commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, or needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather.“Dateline”,“Frontline”,“Nightline”,CNN, New York 1, every possible angle of every story over and over, and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from foreground to background. 46.Compared to the clear words of her boyfriend on screen, his accent becomes________.

A. unreal

B. unbearable

C. misleading

D. not understandable

47.What does the last paragraph mean?
