All could easily cripple your PC if you're not careful. Worse yet, hackers could steal im portant personal information. If that's not enough to send you hiding under the covers, you also have to find a way to keep your kids safe online. Scary? You bet. Unmanageable? Not at all. 2.Answer the Questions

Listen to a short passage. Try your best to understand the lines and answer the following questions.

A com puter virus is a com puter program that can copy itself and infect a com puter. The original m ay m odify the copies or the copies m ay m odify them selves. A virus can only spread from one computer to another when its host is taken to the uninfected com puter, for instance by a user sending it over a network or carrying it on a rem ovable m edium such as a floppy disk, CD, US

B drive or by the Internet.

Viruses are sometimes confused with computer worms and Trojan horses. A worm, however, can spread itself to other com puters without needing to be transferred as part of a host. A Trojan horse is a file that appears harmless until executed. In contrast to viruses, Trojan horses do not insert their code into ot her com puter files.

Many personal com puters are now connected to the Internet and to local area networks, facilitating the spread of m alicious code. Today's viruses m ay also take advantage of network

services such as the World Wide Web, e-m ail, and file sharing system s to spread, blurring the line between viruses and worms.

3.1How to choose a secure password?

Choosing a secure password is a m atter of creating unlikely letter and num ber com binations. The m ore obscure your password, the tougher it will be to crack. Many passwords nowadays are being hacked usually due to inability of its owners to create them properly. If you will responsibly create your password and follow a few sim ple tips, the chances that it will be cracked will drop dramatically. Here are a few tips on how to create

a password that will be a lot harder to crack:

↘Avoid first nam es and surnames.

↘Avoid things that might be easily associated with you like your hobbies, phone numbers etc.

↘Avoid common words in any language whether it be English or Chinese.

↘Use a com bination of letters and numbers. Try to m ix them.

↘Create a password that you can rem ember so that you will not have to write it anywhere.↘Make your password long. The longer, t he better.

↘Do not use keyboard sequences like “qwertyu” for example.

↘Plan on changing your password from time to tim e.

Do not use the sam e password for everything. If som eone finds this password, they would have access to everything. At the very least, m ake at least one password for sensitive things (i.e. online banking, etc.) and one for everything else (AIM, email, etc.).

3.2Gmail’s antivirus scanning

Gmail autom atically scans every attachm ent when it's delivered to your account, and again each tim e you open a m essage. Attachm ents you send are also scanned. Checking attachm ents for viruses protects our users and their information, and prevents the spread of viruses.

↘If a virus is found in an attachm ent you've received, the system will attem pt to clean the file, so you can still access the inform ation it contains. If the virus can't be rem oved from the file, you won't be able to download it.

↘If the system is unable to scan certain files, you'll see an error message. You'll have the option to try again later or to download at your own risk. Please note that if your m ail account can't scan the contents of the file, we can't guarantee that it's safe to view.

↘If an attachm ent you're trying to send is infected with a virus, your mail account will display an error m essage to tell you, but i t won't clean the file. To send the m essage without that attachm ent, click the link in that error message that says 'Remove attachm ent and send.'

If your mail account detects that you're trying to send an infected attachm ent, we suggest running your anti-virus software in case your hard drive is infected. If you don't have anti-virus software, you might consider purchasing and installing one of the popular applications so you can protect your com puter and inform ation from viruses.

4Operate and Retell

Listen to the following instructions on How to schedule Automatic Updates to Virus Definitions in Symantec Antivirus and do the operations on your own computer according to what you’ve heard. Try to retell the whole process after the opera tion.

Sym antec AntiVirus can protect your com puter from destructive programs known as viruses

and Trojan horses, and can also protect against m alicious software. The following steps will schedule Autom atic Updates to Virus Definitions:

1)Click on Start >Programs >Symantec Client Security >Symantec AntiVirus. (Or,

right click the gold shield in the system tray and click Open Symantec AntiVirus.)

2)Click the File m enu and select Schedule Updates.

3)Check the box for Enable scheduled automatic updates and click the Schedule

button.

4)Select the frequency and tim e that you want the virus definitions to be updated. Choose a

tim e when your com puter will be turned on.

(Note: We recommend that you schedule virus definition updates Daily.)

5)Click the Advanced button.

6)To ensure that scheduled updates that are missed run at a later tim e, check the box for

Retry the task within and set the num ber of hours.

7)Click OK to close the open LiveUpdate dialog boxes. Then, click Exit to close the Sym antec

AntiVirus program.
