Abstract

Advanced communication and information processing techniques can be applied

to underwater research to enable new ways of enhancing real-time experimental

outcome. This paper presents solutions developed to support the Dynamics of

the Adriatic in Real Time (DART) sea trials, conducted between NURC and 26

international partners in 2006, which were characterized by large

shore–ship–shore data exchange requirements, in excess of 1 GB/day. The

three-pillar approach adopted (based on network infrastructure, information

infrastructure, context-based data management) involves the seamless combination of different commercial-off-the shelf components (369 kb/s 2-way satellite link, 1 Mb/s unidirectional satellite link, molecular sequence reduction compression and caching) and required the development of quality of service tools and policies, to translate scientific needs from natural language to configuration files. Results showed the possibility of transferring, over a 27-day period, more than 40 GB of data, meeting experimental requirements with minimal expense: the variable cost associated to the transmission of 1 MB of data was in the order of 10 Eurocents using a two-way Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) system and of 40 Eurocents using Digital Video Broadcasting Satellite (DVB-S) unidirectional service. Although the solution presented refers to a specific Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) trial, its application is not constrained to REA only. The flexible combination of technological components and well-proven data management methodologies allows its application to a broader range of scientific problems associated with near-real-time exchange of large datasets.

Abstract

The major role of disaster recovery management is to rapidly restore the chaotic

condition to normal, which includes mitigation, preparedness, response, and

recovery. To reduce secondary damage and loss, the recovery process must be

facilitated. Information technologies (including network, web-based, computer,

and related software tools) speed up the work process to rapidly deliver disaster

information to the related department. In this paper, we share an experience that

used a framework of emergency response, including a simple pre-operating

process and a web-based information system, to effectively manage and control

damaged medical equipment after a fire accident in a hospital operating room.

This web-based information system was built in only 2 weeks and was used to

manage a large amount of medical equipment affected by the fire. Since then, it

effectively prevented the interruption of clinical work at 22 clinical units by

supporting the reconstruction activities.

Abstract

Background

Bipolar disorders are a major public health concern. Efforts to provide optimal care by general practitioners and psychiatrists are undermined by the complexity of the disorder and difficulties in applying clinical practice guidelines and new research findings to the spectrum of cases seen in day to day practice. Method

A national network of bipolar expert centres was established. Each centre has established strong links to local health services and provides support to clinicians in delivering personalized care plans derived from systematic case assessments undertaken at the centre.

Results

A common set of diagnostic and clinical assessment tools has been adopted at eight centres. Evaluations are undertaken by trained assessors and cross-centre reliability is monitored. A web application, e-bipolar? is used to record data in a common computerized medical file. Anonymized data is entered into a shared national database for use in multi-centre audit and research.

Conclusions

Instead of offering treatment advice based on clinical practice guidelines recommendations for selected sub-populations of patients (a …top-down? approach), the French bipolar network offers systematic, comprehensive, longitudinal, and multi-dimensional assessments of cases representative of general bipolar populations. This …bottom-up? strategy may offer a more efficient

and effective way to transfer knowledge and share expertise as the referrer can appreciate the rationale underpinning suggested treatment protocols and more readily apply such principles and approaches to other cases. The network also

builds an infrastructure for clinical cohort and comparative-effectiveness

research on more representative patient populations.

Abstract

Design-patterns and design-principles represent two approaches, which elicit

design knowledge from successful learning environments and formulate it as

design guidelines. The two approaches are fairly similar in their strategies, but

differ in their research origins. This study stems from the design-principles

approach, and explores how learning is affected by curriculum-materials

designed according to two main design-principles: (a) engage learners in peer

instruction, and (b) reuse student artifacts as resource for further learning. These

principles were employed in three higher-education courses and examined with

385 students. Data analysis was conducted in two trajectories: In the “bird?s eye

view” trajectory we used a “feature” unit of analysis to illustrate how learning was

supported by features designed according to the two design-principles in each of

the courses. In the “design -based research ” trajectory we focused on one

feature, a web-based Jigsaw activity, in a philosophy of education course, and

demonstrated how it was refined via three design iterations. Students were

required to specialize in one of three philosophical perspectives, share

knowledge with peers who specialized in other perspectives, and reuse the

shared knowledge in new contexts. Outcomes indicated that the design in the

first iteration did not sufficiently support student ability to apply the shared

knowledge. Two additional design-principles were employed in the next

iterations: (c) provide knowledge representation and organization tools, and (d)

employ multiple social-activity structures. The importance of combining several

design-principles for designing curricular materials is discussed in terms of

Alexander?s design -pattern language and his notion of referencing between

design-patterns.

Abstract

Device heterogeneity in wireless sensor networks is rendering such networks

increasingly difficult to program. To address this problem, we present Servilla, a

novel middleware that enables applications to be both platform-independent and

efficient despite executing over a diverse and dynamic set of devices. It achieves

this by using service-oriented computing and requiring all platform-specific

functionality be encapsulated behind services, which are dynamically discovered

by applications. Novel forms of service bindings and invocation semantics

enable flexible yet energy-efficient in-network collaboration among

heterogeneous devices. To support a wide range of devices, Servilla introduces

the concept of middleware asymmetry, enabling resource-constrained devices to

only provide services that can be leveraged by more powerful devices running

applications. Servilla has been implemented and evaluated on two disparate
