Nile cruise in Egypt

It’s hard to beat Egypt for its mix of heat and culture in December. A seve n-night cruise on board a traditional 19th-century-style wooden luxury sailing vessel, which sleeps up to 12 and cruises between Luxor and Aswan, costs from £775 per head full board, departing on December 11 through Bales (0845 057 0600; https://www.360docs.net/doc/9816458011.html,).

Christmas markets in Cologne

Perhaps the best of northern Europe’s many Christmas markets is Cologne –there are seven separate themed markets which start opening this week. Cologne is also one of the easiest places to get to by train. Eurostar connections from London via Brussels take just under four hours and return tickets are available this winter from £89 (0843 218 6186; https://www.360docs.net/doc/9816458011.html,). For details of accommodation and markets see Cologne Tourism (https://www.360docs.net/doc/9816458011.html,).

A week’s stay at Chalet Eliane costs from £399 chalet board through Crystal Ski (0871 231 2256; https://www.360docs.net/doc/9816458011.html,), or, much more luxurious, a week’s half board at the five-star hotel costs from £1,195 through Crystal Finest (0871 971 0364; https://www.360docs.net/doc/9816458011.html,). Both packages are for departures on December 13.

Japanese Onsen

Snow monkeys warming themselves in the hot springs at Yudanaka make an endearing sight. As snowflakes fall you may be tempted to climb in yourself (perhaps not the same pool, though). Experience this, overnight at a temple and a ryokan, and see Tokyo and Hiroshima, traveling by bullet train, on the 14-night Japan Unmasked tour: £1,600, excluding flights (0117 314 4620; https://www.360docs.net/doc/9816458011.html,).

At 26, Jane Goodall had no college education or science training. But since childhood, she had been dreaming of working closely with animals in Africa. ―All through my childh ood people said you can't go to Africa. You're a girl.‖ Goodall says. ―But my mother used to say, if you really want to, there's nothing you can’t do.‖

In 1957, the 26-year-old Goodall went to Kenya to work as a secretary. She also arranged to meet the famous scientist Louis Leakey, who was so impressed by her enthusiasm that he hired her as his assistant. She went with him on many trips to the African jungle and in 1960 Leakey sent Goodall to live among chimpanzees in a remote animal preserve, recording t he animals’ behavior and interactions.

For three months Goodall made little progress. But she says, ―I never came close to giving up.‖ Her breakthrough came one day when she saw a male chimpanzee stick a piece of grass into a termite (白蚁) hill, then put the grass in his mouth. Afterward she came to the hill and did the same. Pulling the grass out, she discovered dozens of termites on it. The discovery —that some animals use tools —was unknown to most scientists at the time.

Goodall saw chimpanzees exhibit human-like emotions, such as jealousy and love. But she

also discovered they were capable of violent attacks against each other.

Goodall received her Ph.D. in the study of animal behavior at England's Cambridge University. Now she travels around the globe raising money to preserve wildlife. ―I love being in the forest with the chimpanzees,‖ she says. ―I’d much rather be there than traveling around from city to city.‖

About a third of all common cancers in the United States, China and Britain could be prevented each year if people ate healthier food, drank less alcohol and exercised more, health experts said on Friday.

Reports from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) suggest that making simple lifestyle changes could prevent some 40 percent of breast cancers alone in Britain and the United States, as well as tens of thousands of stomach cancers.

―Even in 2011, people are dying unnecessarily from cancers that could be prevented through keeping a healthy weight, diet, physical activity and other lifestyle factors,‖ said a WCRF medical and scientific adviser.

WCRF findings are supported by World Health Organization (WHO) reports, which say regular exercise can prevent many diseases such as cancers and heart diseases.

Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world and its incidence (发病率) is rising. Each year around 12.7 million people discover they have cancer and 7.6 million people die from some form of the disease. There are about 200 known types of cancer.

Rachel Thompson, the WCRF’s head of science, said that while the message was simple —that not smoking, eating good food and being a healthy weight can help ward off many cancers —it was still a difficult one to get across.

The WHO says adults should do at least 150 minutes of exercise a week. This could be done by walking for 30 minutes five times per week or by cycling to work every day.

Peter Baldini, head of the World Lung Foundation, also called on all governments to introduce smoke-free laws and raise the price of cigarettes. Tobacco kills millions of smokers every year, and tobacco-related lung cancers also kill hundreds of thousands of people who don’t smoke but have been exposed to it second-hand.

―There isn’t a magic bullet to cure all forms of cancer, but we have the opportunity and the duty to protect people from developing cancer wherever possible,‖ Baldini said.

46. Which of the following words can best take t he place of the phrase ―ward off‖ in the sixth

paragraph?

A. protect

B. prevent

C. develop

D. cure

47. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the text?

A. Exercising and eating healthily can help to reduce cancer risk.

B. Each year about 12.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer around the world.

C. Both smokers and non-smokers could die from tobacco-related cancers

D. Adults should walk for fifty minutes three times per week.

48. Which of the following can be the best title of this text?

A. Simple life changes could stop millions of cancers

B. Cancer is a leading cause of death

C. Our bad lifestyle caused many diseases

D. The incidence of common cancers is rising

49. By writing the passage, the author mainly intends to .

A. advise people to develop healthier lifestyle.

B. warn people of the danger of cancers

C. explain why many people die from cancers every year.

D. introduce the ways to protect people from developing cancers

50. We can infer from Peter Baldini’s opinion in the last two paragraphs that .

A. all the lung cancers are linked to smoking

B. there is no medicine to cure the cancers but it’s our duty to find one

C. all governments should take measures to control smokers and protect people’s health

D. it’s our opportunity and duty to persuade people to give up smoking

D

Boys need friends, suffer when they don’t believe they have any, and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do, in truth, though, no boy is an island; boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers.

Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are. A recent study of 10-to-15-year-old boys and girls found that girls’ friendships are actually more fragile. Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.

Boys are the living definition of the phrase ―peer group‖; they love games with rules, competition, and doing things together. Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate (空手道) class or on the basketball court. Competence and skill are widely respected; being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can haunt (萦绕心头) a boy for years.

As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls. During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy’s life—and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is ―always there for me‖, someone he can trust. They may be partners in crime or partners in study, but the friendship of adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.

51. The common belief of adults is that boys .

A. don’t care about others as much as girls

B. don’t value friendships as much as girls

C. have the same friendship as girls

D. have healthier friendship than girls

52. According to the passage, .

A. boys usually build friendships by playing competitive games

B. boys like to have small groups of friends

C. boys’ friendships seldom result in anyone being hurt

D. boys’ friendships can hardly end in failure

53. The author mentions the study in Para 2 to prove .

A. girls value relationships more than boys

B. most boys consider their friends very important

C. boys may be better at keeping friendships than girls

D. boys may be more active in a friendship

54. As a boy gets older, he tends to .

A. widen his circle of friends to include his parents

B. shift his focus from his friends to himself

C. keep his parents out of his friends’ circle

D. be confused about what a friendship is 55. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Friendships Between Boys and Girls

B. Boys and Their Friendship

C. Childhood and Adolescent Friendship

D. Tips on Making Friends with Boys

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题,完成阅读任务。

In a study likely to make school staff amazed, U. S. researchers said that chewing gum may help academic performance in teenagers rocket to a higher level.

Many U. S. schools ban chewing because children often dispose of the sticky gum under chairs or tables. But a team found that students who chewed gum during math class had higher scores on a standardized math test after 14 weeks and better grades at the end of the term than students in the class who did not chew gum.

―For the first time we’ve been able to show in a real-life kind of situation that students did perform better when they were allowed to chew,‖ said Gil Leveille, a researcher. ―Wrigley has gotten feedback (反馈) from many of its gum customers who say chewing gum helps them stay focused.‖

The researchers studied four math classes or 108 students aged 13 to 16 years old from a school. About half got free Wrigley’s sugar-free gum to chew during class, homework and tests. They chewed at least one stick of gum 86 percent of the time they were in math class and 36 percent of the time they were doing homework. The other half went without. After 14 weeks, the gum chewers had a three percent increase in their math scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills achievement test.

Another Wrigley-funded study found that college students in a lab who were given difficult computer tasks had lower levels of the stress when they were chewing gum compared to when they were not. Leveille said he thinks chewing gum helps reduce stress so students can do their best work. While he is aware that many schools have a dim view of students’ che wing gum in class, he hopes the findings may change that a bit. ―It’s not a matter of chewing. It’s a matter of gum disposal,‖ Leveille said, adding that that can be overcome by teaching proper disposal behaviors.

56. Please explain the underlined word ―rocket‖ in English. (No more than 5 words)

57. Why is chewing gum forbidden in many U.S. schools? (No more than 15 words)

58. What feedback has Wrigley gotten about chewing gum according to the passage? (No more than 10 words)

59. What does Leveille think of the effects of gum-chewing? (No more than l5 words)

60. Do you agree that ban on chewing gum in class should be removed? Why or why not? (No more than 25 words)
