当代研究生英语读写教程上、下册课后翻译答案==The possibility of a real market-style evolution

Unit1 The possibility of a real market-style evolution of governance is at hand.In cyberspace ,we'll be able to test and evolve rules governing what needs to be governed--intellectual property content and access control,Rules about privacy and free speech. Some communities will allow anyone in;others will restrict access to members who qualify on one basis or another.Those communities that prove self-sustaining will prosper(and perhaps grow and split into subsets with ever-more-particular interests and identities).Those that can't survive-either because people lose interest or get scared off--will simply wither away. Unit2 Once the problem is understood,improvement comes naturally.Women who feel abandoned and deprived when their husbands won't listen to or report daily news may be happy to discover their husbands trying to adapt once they understand the place of small talk in women's relation-ships. But if their husbands don't adapt,the women may still be comforted that for men,this is not a failure of intimacy.Accepting the difference, the wives may look to their friends or family for that kind of talk.And husbands who can't provide it shouldn't feel their wives have made unreasonable demands. Some couples will still decide to divorce, but at least their decisions will be based on realistic expectations. Unit3 1.When it first came into being, the Earth very likely lacked what we would today call an ocean and an atmosphere. 2.Between 2 billion and 3 billion years ago,portions of the surface water, bathed by the energetic radiation from the Sun, developed complicated compounds in organization sufficiently versatile to quality as what we call"life". 3.The entire planet is life form made up of nonliving portions and a large variety of living portions(as our own body is made up of nonliving crystals in bones and nonliving water in blood, as well as of a large variety of living portions).

Part C Directions: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written neatly on the ANSWER SHEET. (10 points) It was only after I started to write a weekly column about the medical journals, and began to read scientific papers from beginning to end, that I realised just how bad much of the medical literature frequently was. I came to recognise various signs of a bad paper: the kind of paper that purports to show that people who eat more than one kilo of broccoli a week were 1.17 times more likely than those who eat less to suffer late in life from pernicious anaemia. (46) There is a great deal of this kind of nonsense in the medical journals which, when taken up by broadcasters and the lay press, generates both health scares and short-lived dietary enthusiasms. Why is so much bad science published? A recent paper, titled “The Natural Selection of Bad Science”, published on the Royal Society’s open science website, attempts to answer this intriguing and important question. It says that the problem is not merely that people do bad science, but that our current system of career advancement positively encourages it. What is important is not truth, but publication, which has become almost an end in itself. There has been a kind of inflationary process at work: (47) nowadays anyone applying for a research post has to have published twice the number of papers that would have been required for the same post only 10 years ago. Never mind the quality, then, count the number. (48) Attempts have been made to curb this tendency, for example, by trying to incorporate some measure of quality as well as quantity int o the assessment of an applicant’s papers. This is the famed citation index, that is to say the number of times a paper has been quoted elsewhere in the scientific literature, the assumption being that an important paper will be cited more often than one of small account. (49) This would be reasonable if it were not for the fact that scientists can easily arrange to cite themselves in their future publications, or get associates to do so for them in return for similar favours. Boiling down an individual’s o utput to simple metrics, such as number of publications or journal impacts, entails considerable savings in time, energy and ambiguity. Unfortunately, the long-term costs of using simple quantitative metrics to assess researcher merit are likely to be quite great. (50) If we are serious about ensuring that our science is both meaningful and reproducible, we must ensure that our institutions encourage that kind of science.

Why do I study for a master`s degree? Many college students chose to take part in social practice after their graduation with the view that it's a waste of time for them to continue learning theory courses. On the contrary, they can catch many opportunities to make money, in which way it can make themselves more skillful and competitive. As far as I'm concerned,I also have a three month working experience.During that time, I have realized that my accumulation of knowledge is not enough for work,for example when you come up with difficult problems,you will feel too complex and exhausted to find a proper way to solve it. However, our potential ability would soon degrade without challenges. Yet,as a graduate student,we can not only enhance the thinking ability but also obtain more time to chose the job which is really suitable for us.Meanwhile,it can content our pursuit of knowledge and expand our horizons in science.During this period of time,I plan to do more readings, such as philosophy,economics,psychology,accountancy,which is universally true in our life time.What's more,as a female,it will cause me aging quickly as the heavy burden from early stepping into society .Nevertheless,I want to be a person who has strong assurance, good psychological endurance capability and more resilience to the

Sleep is very ancient. In the electroencephalographic sense we share it with all the primates and almost all the other mammals and birds: it may extend back as far as the reptiles. There is some evidence that the two types of sleep, dreaming and dreamless, depend on the life-style of the animal, and that predators are statistically much more likely to dream than prey, which are in turn much more likely to experience dreamless sleep. In dream sleep, the animal is powerfully immobilized and remarkably unresponsive to external stimuli. Dreamless sleep is much shallower, and we have all witnessed cats or dogs cocking their ears to a sound when apparently fast asleep. The fact that deep dream sleep is rare among prey today seems clearly to be a product of natural selection, and it makes sense that today, when sleep is highly evolved, the stupid animals are less frequently immobilized by deep sleep than the smart ones. But why should they sleep deeply at all? Why should a state of such deep immobilization ever have evolved? Perhaps one useful hint about the original function of sleep is to be found in the fact that dolphins and whales and aquatic mammals in general seem to sleep very little. There is, by and large, no place to hide in the ocean. Could it be that, rather than increasing an animal's vulnerability, the function of sleep is to decrease it? Wilse Webb of the University of Florida and Ray Meddis of London University have suggested this to be the case. It is conceivable that animals who are too stupid to be quiet on their own initiative are, during periods of high risk, immobilized by the implacable arm of sleep. The point seems particularly clear for the young of predatory animals. This is an interesting notion and probably at least partly true.

Adults Also Need to Read Children’s Books 1.People’s views about whether adults should read children’s books vary from person to person. 2. A majority of people think that adults shouldn’t read children’s books. In their views, children’s literature is special ly written for children, so children read children’s books. There are special books for adults. So it goes without saying that adults shouldn’t read kids’ books. 3.On the contrary, some people differ in their opinions on this matter. They hold the idea that adults also need to read children’s books. In their point of view, on the one hand, adults are actually children’s lead author. It is completely adults business to choose or buy a book especially for baby children. If you have little or even no knowledge a bout children’s literature, it is impossible to bring good, valuable books to children who couldn’t read and just listen to you to tell stories. On the other hand, though children’s literature is occurred for children, once a literary composition is written, it actually faces all kinds of people. When an adult read it, he can satisfy his want, enjoyment, sensation and conformation from his angle with his own life history and experience accumulation. Therefore, there is no doubt that adults also need to read children’s books. 4.As far as I concerned, I firmly hold out the latter opinion. I am in favor that adults also need to read children’s books. To Lie or Not to Lie 1.There is a widespread concern over lying. It is well known that the opinion concerning this hot topic varies from person to person. 2.Some people think that we shouldn’t tell lies. To be a human being, you should be honest. Starting from a child, we have already been told that people should be honest, lies mean cheating. It is the most sincere essence of human nature to be honest. 3.However, some other people hold that we should tell lies. With our age increasing, we just find that many things break with the education we have had. In real life, it is impossible for a person to be genuinely honest. Speaking honest words, it may not only hurt friends or classes, but also make ourselves sad. However, everyone would be happy if you say a lie. Gradually, we find that sometimes we need some white lies to eclipse and console ourselves in real life. So we should learn to be dishonest on a proper occasion. 4.Should we insist to be honest? “Yes” is a good answer. Dishonesty means lying, which is considered an immoral activity. “No” is also a fine answer. It is clear that sometimes dishonest words are happier accep ted and make the relations better. 5.As far as I concerned, I think that every person has his own principle of life. As a common person, we cannot be an entire honest, but be a reliable and sincerity one. Should we strive for status? 1.There is a widespread concern over status. It is well known that the opinion concerning this hot topic varies from person to person. 2.Status is one’s rank in comparison with others in the same social group. A person with high status is one who is well regarded by friends and ass ociates. People may be obsessed with rank, but we’re not always in conflict over it. Several factories can give a person high status in society. These include wealth, social standing, advanced education, and a prestigious occupation. We are all familiar with status symbols such a Cadillac or a mansion. Since these familiar symbols of status all cost money, it is common to mistake a striving for status as a drive to accumulate wealth. However, self-realization defined as “the desire to become more what one i s, to become everything one is capable of” is the original intention of striving for status. People should view work as something to be done in order to feel complete as a person to fulfill a personal philosophy. In fact, once we work out who’s higher and lower, we often relax and get along quite well. If a person can do this he may feel that he or his work is worthwhile and respected. Such people find their life and work intrinsically interesting and satisfying. On this occasion, we should have a positive attitude toward striving for status! My Understanding of True Love 1.The simple four characters of “LOVE” have profound meanings. 2.“L” means loyalty. Loyalty is essential for lovers. Without loyalty, there won’t be true love any more. Both lovers should devote your whole love into each other and be responsible for your love. Loyalty is an absolutely necessary content to true love. “O” means obligation. If I love you, I would obligate to most of
