Cultural practices, cultural differentces, local manners, and mores:traveling the globe can be a behavioral minefield, even when you have the best intentions.Everything from greeting to eating can be an opportunity to do the wrong thing, and not only embarrass yourself, but offend your host countrymen .Look out for the following cultural mistakes and try to avoid them while going abroad.

Personal space varies as you travel the globe. In Mediterranean countries,if you refrain from touching someone’s arm when talking to them or if you don’t greet them with kisses or a warm embrace, you’ll be considered cold .But backslap someone who isn’t a family member or a good friend in Korea, and you’ll make them uncomfortable. In Thailand, the head is considered sacred-never even pat a child on the head.

Observer what locals are doing and follow suit.In Eastern countries remember that touching and public displays of affection are unacceptable. In places like Qatar and SaudiArabia, menland women are forbidden from interacting, let along touching.

Some cultures find it disgusting to blow your nose in public -----especially at the table .The Japanese and Chinese are also repelled by the idea of a handkerchief.

If traveling through Eastern and Asian countries, leave the hankies at home and opt for disposable trissues instead. In France as well as in Easter n countries,if you’re dining and need to clear your nasal passages, excuse yourself and head to the restroom.Worst-case scenario:make an exaggerated effort to steer away from the table .Let’s hope you don’t have a cold.

In some countries, like China,Japan, and some African nations, the food’s the thing,so don’t start chatting about your day’s adventures while everyone else is digging into dinner. You’ll likely be met with silence-----not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtimes are for eating, not talking. Also avoid conversations in places a country might consider sacred or reflective-----churches in Europe, temples in Thailand ,and saunas in Finland.

Take off your shoes when arriving at the door of a London dinner party and the hostess will find you uncivilized, but fail to remove your shoes before entering a home in Asia,Hawaii,or the Pacific Islands and you’ll be considered disrespectful. Not only does shoe removal very practically keeps sand and dirt out of the house ,it’s a sign of leaving the outside world behind.

If you see a row of shoes at the door, start undoing your laces. If not, keep the shoes on.

Many cultures still prefer to eat using traditional methods-----their hands. In these cases, food is often offeren communally, which is why it’s important to wash your hands before eating and observe the right -hand –is- for- eating and the left-hand-is-for-other-duties rule.If you eat with your left hand ,expect your fellow diners to be mortified. And when partaking from a communal bowl, stick to a portion that’s closest to you. Do not get greedy and plunge your hand into the center.

Left-handed ?Attempt to be ambidextrous----even children who are left-handed in these cultures are taught to eat with their right hand ------or at least explain yourself to your fellow diners before plunging in.

Once you are on the ground of a different country ,remain highly sensitive to native behavior .Never be completely surprised by anything;try to take it in stride, and don’t feel offended if something seems offensive-------like queue jumping. After all, this is a global village, and we are all very different.

[1] Touching Someone

[2] Blowing Your Nose

[3] Talking Over Dinner

[4] Removing Your Shoes…or Not 脱鞋......与否

[5] Knowing Your Right from Your Left

Text 2 Dolphins Have the Longest Social Memory(海豚有很长的社会记忆)

Dolphins can recognize their old tank mates’ whistles after being separated for more than 20 years—the longest social memory ever recorded for a non-human species.

The remarkable memory feat is another indication that dolphins have a level of cognitive sophistication comparable to only a few other species, including humans, chimpanzees and elephants. Dolphins’ talent for social recognition may be even more long-lasting than facial recognition among humans, since human faces change over time, but the signature whistle that identifies a dolphin remains stable over many decades.

“This shows us an animal operating cognitively at a level that’s very consistent with human social memory,‖ said Jason Bruck, who conducted the study and received his PhD in June 2013 from the University of

Chicago’s Department of Comparative Human Development. His study is published in the current issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. “这展示给我们动物操作研究在一个水平和人类社会记忆非常合适”JK说,他做了研究被他的教授D承认,D是在2013年6月从芝加哥大学的皇家人类发展比较项目来的。

To establish how well dolphins could remember their former companions, Bruck collected data from 53 different bottlenose dolphins at six facilities, including Brookfield Zoo near Chicago and Dolphin Quest in Bermuda. The six sites were part of a breeding consortium that has rotated dolphins and kept records on which ones lived together, going back decades.

“This is the kind of study you can only do with captive groups where you know how long the animals have been apart,‖ Bruck said. ―To do a similar study in the wild would be almost impossible.‖“这是一个研究你可以只捕获受控制的群体当你知道动物分开多久”B说,“去做类似的研究在野生的群体几乎是不可能的”‘SIGNATURE WHISTLES’ OFFER MEANS TO TEST MEMORY

In recent years, other studies have established that each dolphin develops a unique signature whistle that appears to function as a name. Researchers Vincent M. Janik and Stephanie L. King at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews reported earlier this year that a wild bottlenose dolphin can learn and repeat signatures belonging to other individuals, and answer when another dolphin mimics its unique call.

Bruck played recordings of signature whistles to dolphins that had once lived with the animals that made the calls. Determining whether the dolphins recognized their old companions required a methodical comparison of how they responded to familiar calls versus calls belonging to dolphins they had never met.

First, Bruck would play recording after recording of signature whistles that the target dolphins had never heard before. His initial studies showed that these ―dolphins get bored quickly listening to signature whistles from dolphins they don’t know.‖ Once they were habituated to the unfamiliar calls, Bruck would play a recording of an animal with which the target dolphin had lived.

The familiar calls often would perk up the dolphins and elicit an immediate response.

“When they hear a dolphin they know, they often quickly approach the speak er playing the recording,‖ Bruck said. ―At times they will hover around, whistle at it, try to get it to whistle back.‖熟悉的声音经常使海豚变得活跃,以及引起即刻的反应。

To check that the response was the result of recognition, Bruck also would play a test recording of an unfamiliar bottlenose that was the same age and sex as the familiar animal. All the behavior was scored according to how quickly and to what degree the animals responded.

Aclear pattern emerged in the data: Compared with unfamiliar calls, dolphins responded significantly more to whistles from animals they once knew, even if they had not heard the calls in decades.

Text 3 10 Reasons to Keep Learning Once You’re Done With School

There have always been people who have believed that lifelong learning is a worthwhile process. Increasingly, scientific research is proving them correct and technology is making it easier – adults can now take online college classes for the rest of their lives. For example, a recent article in The Atlantic reported that when individuals learn new tasks, they strengthen the part of their brain used in learning the task. Even better, this process makes the neighboring areas of the brain more resilient as well. This means that learning can make what you already know stronger, too.

So, without further ado, here are ten more reasons why you should always keep learning:

1. Fight Boredom. Most people feel bored when they aren’t challenged and boredom is the number one cause of bad decisions. If you’re constantly learning new things, you’ll be less prone to disinterest. And, in today’s world, with TE D conferences and the Khan Academy, there are plenty of opportunities to enrich yourself.

2. Keep Your Brain Healthy. A 2010 study out of the University of California at Irvine revealed that learning keeps your brain functioning at a high level. Just like you need to exercise your body’s muscles and cardiovascular system, you need to exercise your brain to keep it in tip-top shape.

3. Grow Your Career. If you learn new work-related skills, you’ll be more likely to get a promotion or raise. And, with the rise of online education, you can even enroll in certified programs that allow you to learn and improve your career during your off-hours.

4. Model Positive Behavior for Your Kids. If you expect your children to focus in school and take the time to learn their lessons, you should exhibit the same commitment to self-improvement in your daily life.

5. Fight Alzheimer’s Disease. According to Science Daily, continued learning can slow the physical process of Alzheimer’s Disease. You’ll be healthier longer.

6. Keep in Touch With The World. If you don’t know the latest fashion, comedy and news trends, you’ll sound outdated and out-of-touch. By trying new things and learning new ideas, you’ll better be able to relate to those around you.

7. Find and Increase Your Pleasure. Learning isn’t necessarily a chore. If you’re intereste d in a

hobby such as cooking, learning new recipes and cooking processes can be enjoyable. It can make you appreciate your hobby even more.

8. Look at the World with Fresh Eyes. Scientists believe that much of what is called creativity is simply the ability to apply skills learned in one setting to problems in another setting. If you’re always learning, this means that when you face a familiar problem, you may be able to come at it with an unorthodox solution, based on your new knowledge.

9. Keep Abreast of Technology. Computers become obsolete within a few years. If you’re not constantly learning new things about technology, you’re falling behind. Which means you’ll miss out on social, business and technological opportunities, simply because you didn’t keep up.

10. All the Greats are Doing It. Think of anyone, in any field, who is truly brilliant at what they do. They got where they are through constant self-improvement. Truly talented people are constantly learning and implementing new skills. It’s worth joining them in this passion.

There are plenty of fabulous reasons to keep learning new things, regardless of what they are. Forming new connections in your brain doesn’t have to be difficult, though it would certainly be a good idea to make sure it was some of the time. Now, it’s time to go out there and just do it.

Text 4 How to Become a Positive Thinker(如何变成一个积极的思考者)

Positive thinking is a significant element of happiness. In order to become a positive thinker, determination and consistency are important. The first thing to know about positive thinking is that everyone can do it. With certain cognitive and behavioral modifications, we can all become positive thinkers. Another important factor is that being a positive thinker does not mean you become numb to anything that is not working properly in your life or is negative -- it just means that you approach life and face challenges with a healthier outlook。

To become a positive thinker, these may help you:要想成为一个积极的思考者,下面这些也许能帮到你:

1. Change your self-monitoring:

Instead of selectively attending to negative events, focus on the positive ones. Then pay attention to the delayed consequences of your behavior rather than the immediate ones. For example, if a job is not going like you want, focus on the fact that you have a job and how you can take your time to make the situation better。

2. Change your self-evaluation:

Challenge any inaccurate internal attributions and see if you compare your behavior to standards that are excessively rigid and perfectionistic. If so, change these and be reasonable with your comparisons. For example, if you constantly compare your weaknesses with other peoples' strengths, then switch this and compare yourself with those who are doing poorer than you as well. Overall, people who focus more on their strengths than their weaknesses but at the same time are aware of their weaknesses have a healthier self-evaluation result。

3. Change your self-reinforcement:

If you have low rates of self-reward and high rates of self-punishment when it comes to certain aspects of your life, then you want to modify this. For example, think more of how far you've come, how hard you've worked, acknowledge yourself for it and then see how much further you want to go。

4. Draw conclusions with evidence:

Look at the evidence, look at the events, look at patterns and don't base your conclusions on assumptions. For example, don't just assume someone will cheat you because they look like or in some ways act like an ex you didn't get along with. Look at other elements to see if there is any evidence for your assumption。

5. Don't:

The majority of how people interact with you is due to their own personality, strengths, and baggage and does not have as much to do with you. Pay attention to how to differentiate

between different interaction signals. For example, instead of immediately getting frustrated because the waitress was a little late attending to you, think that maybe she is having a really tough day or too may tables to take care of。

6. Don't do "either/or" thinking:

Black and white thinking based on perfectionistic thought is counterproductive. Every time a thought pops up and has words like "should" or "must," challenge it. For example, instead of saying "this should be done this way," say something like, "I prefer it this way but I am sure there are other ways to do and am willing to be open。

7. Don't do emotional reasoning:

This is a belief based on feeling alone without any rational thinking behind it. For example, you don't like such and such but you don't have any logical reason for not liking them。

8. Challenge your "what if" thoughts: .”

When faced with too much fear about a situation, imagine the worst case scenario and visualize a solution for it, then let go of fear. This way, you will be prepared for anything and your fear would not block you from being open and creative to different solutions. For example, if you are constantly worried about losing your job up to a point where it is creating a lot of anxiety and fear and is effecting your performance and your happiness negatively, then think of losing your job, visualize how you will handle it, find solutions in your mind and then let go of the thought and the fear attached to it。

At the end, positive thinkers are better problem solvers and have better interactions. In addition to that, people who are positive thinkers are happier and more satisfied with their life。

Text5 Finding Your Own Learning Types(如何开启属于自己的学习模式?)p30

With the new school Year quickly approaching(or perhaps, for your early-starters,already under way),it’s time to get ready for a successful semester. And while you may be revamping your wardrobe for fall,it’s equally important to freshen up your study skills, too.

Have you ever noticed that your study habits are different than those of your friends? Or how you seem to learn faster in certain classes? Some people are quick to blame the professor or subject for their difficulties, but that isn’t always the cause. One thing that many people seem to overlook is their learning type.

The 3 Main Learning Types

Now, you may be wondering what a learning type is and how to find yours. There are three different learning types: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. You can be a combination of learning types, but most people have one type that dominates.

1. Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily retain information from pictures, graphs, and videos, you are likely a visual learner.

2. Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to remember things by hearing them, whether listening to a lecture or repeating information out loud, then you are likely an auditory learner.

3. Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands or testing out what you are shown, you are likely a kinesthetic learner.

So now that you know your personal learning style, the trick is to find out how to use your new-found knowledge to help you in your classes.

Tips for Visual Learners

1. Pay attention! For visual learners, this is very important (and always respectful). If your professr uses a PowerPoint, observe the pictures they might include and their significance.

2. Take notes by drawing graphs and connecting ideas instead of just copying down a list. This way, your brain will easily connect the different concepts. You can even draw pictures if you find that works better for you.

3. Color code your notes and/or your note cards. This will aid your brain in keeping all of the information separate. You can code by chapter, type of information, or any way that helps you.

4. Download the notes or presentations if your professor makes them available. This way, you can go back over them before an exam and quickly re-read to retain the info.

Tips for Auditory Learners

1. Again, pay attention! If you aren’t listening while the lecture is happening, then as an auditory learner, you’re missing out on the easiest way for you to learn without having to make up for it later on.

2. If you think it would help and you obtain permission from the professor, you can record the lecture for future listening.

3. If you find that taking notes distracts you from listening, ask a friend if you can borrow their notes OR directly after the lecture, write down everything you remember.

Tips for Kinesthetic Learners

1. Guess what the first point is once again? You’ve got it, pay attention! For kinesthetic learners, it’s extremely important that you take notes either by writing or typing, in order to actively engage with information as you receive it.

2. Rewrite notes and reread information. If possible, translate the information into examples. This is something that can help kinesthetic learners retain what they need to know.

3. Visualize! One method that can help kinesthetic learners is to visualize yourself picking up information and putting it into a category. This may sound silly, but in this way you’re ―doing‖ something without actually physically doing it.

4. Take advantage of labs and other class activities. These moments are when you’re at your prime for learning. Concentrate on what you’re learning from the experience and pay close attention to the process that you go through.

Text6 Four Ways to Be Happier-About Your Past

No,we can’t change history.what’s past is past .but the past doesn’t determine our ability to be happy now or in the future.

See ,the only place that the past exists is in our memory.how we choose to remember the events and stories of our personal histories has a direct impact on how good we feel.fortunately,we are free to select and review the files of our memories under any lens that we choose.

I once had a mind bending converstion with my two sisters.we were driving together to our family cabin in the Sierras comparing childhood stories.we talk about old boyfriends, leaving home, marriage and having children when the converstain turned to our childhood. I said something to the affect that I was glad that the tumultuous years of our childhood were behind us and that our family could all enjoy being together during this phase of our life. I spoke about the conflict, fear, and violence in our childhood home and about the relief of having passed through that phase of our lives.

To my c omplete surprise,my sister Penny who is just one year younger than me,said,―where did you grow up?‖,she went om to explain how she grew up in the most loving and ideal family,

How she felt so loved and cared fot cared for.Her childhood was filled with fun and adventure and a tremendous warmth and affection. To which I replied,―Where did you grow up?Disneyland?‖

Point is,we grew up in the same house with the same parents and the same circumstances. I tried to pull out selective data to convince her my perspective was correct.―Don’t you remember being afraid to go to sleep at ninght when mom and dad were fighting?‖Nope. She didn’t remember . ―Don’t you remember the great vacation we had in Yosemite?‖she replied.

Here is where the opportunity lies to be happier about our past-change they way you choose to remember the events of the past and you change the way you feel about them. Why not write your personal history in a more positive linght? Here’s how:

Be grateful. All of your past experiences have made you who you are today. When you dwell in the past , appreciate the events and circumstances that contributed to the richness, texture and depth of your life experience.

Forgive.Yes,this is a big one and easier said than done.Dr.Everett Worthington, author of The Power of Forgiving has a proven 5-step process for forgiveness. I can’t find a good link to it at the moment but will post it here tomorrow. Forgiveness reduces anger, stress, fear and a whole host of other negative emotions . It is a gift to both the forgiver and the forgiven and releases you from toxic emotions rooted in yesteryear.

Amplify Positive Memories. As you pull from the past, choose positive experiences rather than negative ones.Processing negative experiences may be useful in psychotherapy----I don’t know, not my are a of expertise. However, hanging out in your mind with your negative memories will decrease your feeling of well being in the present. Why not choose the success of completing that triathlon or being accepted to a great

college rather than the humiliation of wetting your pants in the first grade?(Yep,all three are in my memory banks)

Rewrite Your Personal History. You can actually sit down and write a version of your personal history simply highlighting all of the great events of your past.Try to stick to some semblance of fact.If you embellish too much or try to put a positive spin on say a traumatic experience, you will find your mind busy judging and debating the details rather than relishing the positivity of the past. And you don’t have to actually write i t down.We tell our personal stories all the time and they reinforce how we think and feel about our past .Choose the stories that reflect the gems rather than the rocks and you will in effect, rewrite history---your history that is. Text 7 Why a Low-price Retailer is Thriving(为何廉价零售如此蓬勃)

FEW domestic firms are prospering in crisis-racked Spain, but Mercadona is. Spain's largest supermarket by sales has enjoyed double-digit growth for most of the past decade. When Juan Roig, the chairman, took over in 1981, Mercadona had only eight shops, all in Valencia. Today it has 1,310 and annual sales of 16.5 billion $23.8 billion. Spain's economic troubles seem to have made it stronger. Profits dipped in 2009, but surged again by 47% in 2010 after some forceful cost-cutting.

Mercadona's strength is low prices. The family-owned chain does not fritter away cash on advertising. It mercilessly squeezes the suppliers of its own-brand products. These suppliers, of which there are about 100, put up with Mercadona's squeezing because they have a long-term relationship with the company and have grown with it. Since 2009 Mercadona has shaved 2.2 billion of costs from its products, often with simple adjustments such as reducing packaging.

Tight relationships with its suppliers foster innovation. For example, sticking a plastic lid on a large tin of tuna made it easier to open and increased its sales by 60% in 2010. Even so, Mercadona does not skimp on technology or logistics. It was the first retailer in Spain to use bar-code scanners. And it owns a fully automated logistics warehouse just outside Madrid. Robot arms stack goods in crates like a game of Tetris.

Mercadona is unique in several ways, says Zeynep Ton of Harvard University, who wrote a case study on the chain. Its 63,500 employees are on permanent contracts with bonuses, work regular hours and receive 20 times more training than the staff of an average American retailer. This makes them more productive: sales per Mercadona employee were 18% higher in 2008 than at other Spanish supermarkets. Staff turnover is only 4%. Employees constantly gather feedback from shoppers, whom they refer to, accuratelyenough, as bosses.

Shops are designed to make shopping quick and easy. The selection is smaller than in other supermarkets, especially after Mercadona took theunpopular decision of eliminating 1,000 products from the shelves in 2009. Own-label items such as Deliplus a line of cosmetics account for 38 % of sales. Mercadona products were ranked number one, in terms of value for money, in a recent survey of 5,200 households by TNS, a market researcher.

There is still plenty of room to grow at home. Mercadona accounts for 13.1 % of the floor space in Spanish supermarkets, which makes it the third-largest chain in the country, after France's Carrefour and the co-operative Eroski. It aims to enter the Italian or French market next year, probably through a small acquisition.

Mr Roig doubts that the Mercadona model can simply be copied abroad. We must learn everything from everyone, he says. Unlike most Spanish bosses, Mr Roig doesn't mince his words. Earlier this year he said the only good thing about 2011 for Spain was that it would be better than 2012. It will be worse if the Spanish people do not take up the challenge of transforming Spain, he says, by which he means bringing its colossal welfare state under control. Mr Roig believes that Spain has great human capital. That is true, but Spain's youth unemployment rate-a staggering 45%-suggests that much of this talent is being squandered.

The protesters in the plazas complain that Spain's politicians have lost touch with how ordinary people live. That is not a mistake a supermarket can afford to make.

Text 8 Americans are Overoptimistic about Their Weight

Ninety percent of Americans know that most of their compatriots are overweight, but just 40 percent believe themselves to be too fat, according to a study published on Tuesday.

Government statistics show that more that 60 percent of the U.S. population is overweight, and half is obese, meaning they are at serious risk of health effects from their weight.

But the Pew Research Center telephone survey of more than 2,000 adults found that many people overestimate how tall they are and underestimate how much they weigh--and thus do not rate themselves are overweight, even when they are.

"The survey finds that most Americans, including those who say they are overweight, agree that personal behavior--rather than genetic disposition or marketing by food companies--is the main reason people are overweight," Pew says in the report.

"In particular, the public says that a failure to get enough exercise is the most important reason, followed by a lack of willpower about what to eat. About half the public also says that the kinds of foods marketed at restaurants and grocery stores are a very important cause, and roughly a third say the same about the effect of genetics and heredity."

And at least some people appear to have given up on dieting to control their weight, the survey found.

"One in four respondents in our survey say they are currently dieting, and roughly half (52 percent) say they have dieted at some point in their lives. In a poll taken 15 years ago, the percentage of adults who reported having ever dieted was slightly higher--57 percent," the report reads.

The adults polled were asked how tall they are and how much they weigh. Doctors and researchers around the world use a ration of height to weight called body mass index to calculate if someone is obese or overweight.

The women reported they weighed a median of 150 pounds and had a median height of 5 feet five inches, which would put them just barely on the borderline of being overweight.

But national statistics indicate that U.S. women in fact have a median weight of 155 pounds and are only 5 feet 4 inches tall, which puts them squarely into the overweight column.

"As for men, well, they give themselves even more phantom height than women do--two extra inches," the report reads. "The self-reported median height of men in the Pew survey is 5 feet 11 inches, compared with 5 feet 9 inches in the government survey."

"Virtually everyone agrees that a person's weight has an impact on the chances for a long and healthy life," the report reads. "More than nine-in-ten (91 percent) believe that weight has an impact on attractiveness, either a little (35 percent) or a lot (56 percent)."

Text 9 Finding a New Career within Your Present Company(您现在的公司内寻找一个新的职业)

If you spend the majority of your time on the clock struggling to keep your eyes open, it may be time to find a new vocation. But before you start writing cover letters or practicing answers to tough interview questions, consider the possibilities for reinventing yourself within your current company. Finding fulfillment may be as simple as switching departments, responsibilities, or managers.

First, make a list of the type of jobs that you think you would like to do. If you are interested in writing, for example, consider the opportunities in your current company for writing employee communications pieces, direct mailings to customers, or advertising slogans. Remember that many departments require writers to compose training manuals, procedures bulletins, and simple office correspondence.

Scrutinize (自信检查)your list carefully and realistically imagine yourself doing the jobs that you have listed. Think about the actual tasks that you would be required to do. For example, if you are considering a job as an events coordinator, your responsibilities would include visiting potential event sites, negotiating contracts, and brainstorming themes. These may sound very exciting, but this job also involves getting everything done on a tight deadline, checking and rechecking all details (which can often change at the last minute), and keeping all participants fully aware of the plans. When you see the incumbent(现任者)in this position, she often seems relaxed and smiling, but it’s part of the job to appear this way. Most of the time, her mind is racing over last-minute details.

Learn more about the jobs that you have selected. Talk to your colleagues and find out what they know about them. Workmates often have friends working in different departments, and some of them may work in the areas that you’re interested in. Prepare yourself with a list of questions and try to arrange informal coffee sessions with these people. Take this opportunity to discuss all your issues and concerns. Most people are happy to talk about themselves.

Upgrade your skills in areas where you are lacking. Through your research, you may discover that you just aren’t qualified for some of the jobs that interest you. Night school and correspondence courses are readily available in most parts of the country. These programs are sometimes government sponsored, which means that there may be no cost to you. Or you can check with your personnel department, as many companies will pay all or part of tuition fees for courses at accredited colleges and universities.

(Try job shadowing someone who has the job you want. Approach your manager or personnel department and ask about career planning. Tell them that you are interested in developing your career with the company and ask them for suggestions. It often works to spend time working alongside the person who is already in the job. You can do this for as little as an hour a day for a few days, or for a full day, depending on how much time the managers are willing to spare for this type of activity. This has to be tactfully handled, as you don’t want to appear as though you are trying to take over the other person’s job. The best explanation is to say that you are looking at many different options, not specifically at this position.)

Volunteer for project work in your areas of interest. Tell your manager that you are interested in being involved with projects on your own time. Before or after your regular hours of work, you can participate in all sorts of activities. People rarely turn down an extra pair of hands when it’s offered voluntarily.

Join charitable committees at your workplace. Most companies involve employees in fundraising activities. No matter what group you join, you will meet fellow employees from other departments. You can even start up your own project, such as a volleyball or softball tournament and sell admission tickets. You will benefit from the experience while helping those who are less fortunate.

Make a good impression wherever you go. As you find yourself meeting new people at all levels, keep an open mind. Be prepared to listen and learn. Don’t act as if you know everything. Remember that their time is valuable, and if they are prepared to share their knowledge, all the better. Try to remain cheerful even if things begin to get complicated and you don’t understand everything that’s going on. When it comes to applying for a job in one of these departments, people will remember your behavior. This is your chance to shine!

Text 10 It’s Never Too Late To Learn Anything

I have a group of ladies who are beginner to intermediate level snow skiers that I teach each week fo r eightweeks during the winter. When we were sitting on the chairlift, we saw some of the little kids be low who werefearlessly zipping down the slopes. These kids must have been anywhere from four to six years of age.

Some of the ladies remarked how they wished they had started snow skiing at the same age of these little kids. They claimed that the kids seem to have no fear unlike them, struggling adults. When the k ids fall onthe snow, they just get up again and laugh it off.

This is in total contrast to adults who often have a deep fear of falling and injuring themselves. Indeed , someof my ladies tend to tense up and ski very slowly when the slopes are a bit steeper or icier. Th e commonobjective they all have when I asked them what they wanted to achieve this winter is to ha

ve moreconfidence on the ski slopes.

What these ladies might not be realizing is that they are already setting great examples for other adul ts.Instead of choosing not to pursue a sport or activity like snow skiing because they think they are al ready too old, they signed up to take ski lessons from professional certified instructors.

Despite their fears, they are always willing to try out the various drills I show them or venture out with theclass on steeper terrain that they otherwise might not have skied down on their own. I give them a lot ofcredit for this and their efforts slowly pay off as they continually surprise themselves each week with theirskill improvements.

Don’t Compare To Others

Although it would have been nice to start a sport like snow skiing at an early age, that opportunity ha s pastfor us adults so it’s not even worth dwelling on. My adult students should not compare themselv es to thekids speeding past. They should be proud enough to participate in an activity that many othe r adultsconsider too extreme to start.

My ladies need not reach the level of the kids to have fun out there. They can enjoy the ski slopes on theirown level and they are doing the right thing by learning how to do it safely with expert supervisio

n and coaching.

Progress On Your Own Terms

This should be the same with any new skills whether they are sports or foreign languages or comput ers. Alladults should realize that it is never too late to learn new things. For example, it is great to see more andmore seniors are now taking efforts to learn how to use computers and the internet so that they cancommunicate with their loved ones online or share photos.

In fact, learning new things is a good thing because new skills help exercise our bodies and our mind s. Thishas proven to be one of the best anti-aging strategies out there.

So if you have ever wanted to learn a certain sport or some other skill, do not hesitate to take the initi ativeto sign up for a course or seminar that will help get you started. Although you might not become an expert, you can still benefit greatly from all the enjoyment that you will get when participating with t hose new skills.

The ladies in my ski classes should feel no shame because they are slower than the ski kids. Instead , theyshould feel proud to add yet another skill and activity to their lives.

Feel free to share below a new skill that you learned later in life as well as those that you have still ye t tolearn.

These parts can be grouped into four major categories: body, engine, chassis and electrical equipment 。 2)The engine acts as the power unit. The internal combustion engine is most common: this obtains its power by burning a liquid fuel inside the engine cylinder. There are two types of engine: gasoline (also called a spark-ignition engine) and diesel (also called a compression-ignition engine). Both engines are called heat engines; the burning fuel generates heat which causes the gas inside the cylinder to increase its pressure and supply power to rotate a shaft connected to the power train. 1)Power train system: conveys the drive to the wheels 2)Steering system: controls the direction of movement 3)Suspension system: absorbs the road shocks 4)Braking system: slows down the vehicle P4 传动系把发动机输出的扭矩传递给驱动轮。 5)Drum brakes have a drum attached to the wheel hub, and braking occurs by means of brake shoes expanding against the inside of the drum. The Disadvantage of Living in a City Tired of the city life, some city-dwellers opt for city suburbs as their residence. They are flocking there to avoid people-in the city, wherever you look, it’s people, people, people. It’s not strange for them complain about the living conditions in the city. It takes ages for a bus to get to you because the traffic on the roads has virtually come to a standstill. The subways which leave or arrive every few minutes are packed : an endless procession of human sardine tins. All the simple, good things of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium. Tall buildings blot out the sun. The flow of traffic goes on continuously and the noise never stops. Decades of years ago, people were crazy about crowding into the city. Now more and more people believe that only a madman would choose to live in a large modern city.
