(Passive Rhetoric Techniques)

1. Try to shed a few extra pounds? 2. Studies show these efforts may shave off the pounds quickly. 3. Here are ten simple strategies that can help melt away your fat forever. 4. …like a logical way to peel off a few pounds. 5. …roughly the amount needed to burn off one pound. 6. You must eat less to lose weight. 7. A key obstacle to dropping extra pounds is after-dinner snacking. 8. 10 Ways to Lose Pounds.

Don’t take the low-fat label as a license to eat. If the term sounds unscientific to 20th-century ears, let us remember there is a definite connection between marshy lands and malaria…(如果这个术语对生活在20世纪的人听来不科学的话,那就让我们记住在沼泽地和疟疾之间有一定的联系……)。 Na?ve rats and frogs are said to have reacted wildly to such proposed experimented situation. Na?ve用于现代生物学时的含义为:not previously subjected to experimentation or a part icular experimented situation.(据说,首次用来作实验的鼠和蛙对这种设定的环境改变都有剧烈反应。)再如:However, there are plenty of people who like tennis. It is the megagame.

(Active Rhetoric Techniques)

(Lexical Stylistic Devices)

metaphor(比喻), metonymy(借代), personification(拟人), irony(反语), hyper***(夸张), understatement(低调), euphemism(委婉语), contrast(对照), oxymoron(矛盾修辞法), transferred epithet(移就), pun(双关), syllepsis(异叙), zeugma(粘连), parody(仿拟), paradox(隽语)2. (Syntactical Stylistic Devices)

repeti t ion(反复), catchword repetition(联珠), chiasmus(回文), parallelism(平行结构), antithesis (反对), rhetoric question(设问), anticlimax(突降)

(Phonetic Stylistic Devices)

alliteration(头韵), onomatopoeia(拟声)

We had plenty of company in the way of wagon-loads and mule-loads of tourists------and dust.

Clearly, when i t comes to marriage, practicing beforehand doesn’t make perfect. When flu hits below the belt, it can be a challenge to keep

down anything more nourishing than tea and water. Little John was born with a silver spoon in a mouth, which was rather curly and large. 英语成语to be born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth的含义是“出生在富贵之家”。

He first put a club in my hand when I was about ten. I threw a lot of tantrums in the upland hills of North Carolina, and clubs too. I was in such a rush to be good that he would urge me to “relax and enjoy the round. The game ends far too soon.” I didn’t have a clue what he meant. By day’s end, I had drilled 4216 holes to a depth of 18 inches, and I had lost mine pounds, my hearing, feeling in both hands and the ability to lift anything heavier than the evening paper.

So, during any five-week shape-up, focus more on the tape measure than on the bathroom scale.

First gentleman: Thou art al w ays figuring disease in me, but thou art full of error, I am sound. Lucio: Nay, not as one would say, healthy; but so sound as things that are hollow; impiety has made a feast of thee.

Change is part of life and the making of character, hon. When the things happen that you do not like, you have two choices: You get bitter or better. Predictably, the winter will be snowy, sleety, and slushy.

换言之,也就是英语词汇denotation(本义)之外的connotation(转义)。Peter Newmark在 A Textbook of Translation中把英语中的比喻分成四类,令人耳目一新:I have suggested elsewhere that there are four types of metaphor: fossilized, stock, recently created and original. In the middle of the picnic, i t started to rain cats and dogs, and everybody got soaked. While we were busy eating a picnic, a storm cloud suddenly appeared and everybody got soaked. 在A Dictionary of American Idioms中,写道:rain cats and dogs: To rain very hard; come down in torrents------A cliché. If you use this metaphor, I will doubt if you are my grandfather’s uncle! She was in a flood of tears. The corridors were flooded wi t h

girls. Strawberries flooded the market and prices dropped down. 如在一篇名为Rescue of A Newborn 中有三个句子:A. I focused on a small blob in the mud amid the columns of legs and trunks. B. I suddenly came upon a wall of feeding elephants. C. …grabbed their lost baby and tugged her gently into a stockade of legs. 如:Jeff Rennicke在A Promise of Spring 中开卷段是:Nothing. No tracks but my own are stitched into the dusting of fresh snow, white as birch bark, that fell during the night. No flittering shadows in the trees, not a sliver of bird song in the air.

一是保留原文的形象,即: to find an equivalent image. 如:Ani began pounding and yelling to be let out as the car screeched from the parking lot. But rock music blaring from the radio speakers drowned him out. The policemen who patrolled the big city slum area that summer were sitting on a volcano.

Cavorting and diving at breathtaking speeds, the beautiful birds (指鹰) mirrored each other in flight.

But after six years of a stormy marriage, Cewe decided to end i t. She didn’t want her son to grow up thinking that kind of relationship was normal. Rudy knew they had severed the wrong rope and that it was the thick tow line that trapped him. “Try cutting the other rope!” said Rudy, his hopes, and his grip, eroding. The following week was family conference, something I dreaded. This was the day the dirty laundry got hung out to air in a private session between parent, child and counselor. The operation may not succeed; it’s a gamble whether he lives or dies.

●He jumped back as if he had been stung, and the blood rushedsintoshis wrinkled face.(他往后一跳,好像被什么东西叮了一下似的,他那张布满皱纹的脸顿时涨得通红。)

●The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird wi t h a broken wing.

(Metaphor)

●What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter?

●... while most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of criticism, we are somehow reluctant to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise.(……

(Metonymy)

●My 15 students read Emerson, Thoreau, and Huxley.(我的十五位学生读了爱默生、梭罗和赫胥黎的作品。)

●Against the Oval Earth man, the first card I can play is the analogy of the sun and moon.

(Personification)

●... four evergreen shrubs stood at each corner, swheresthey struggled to survive the dust and fumes from a busy main road.(……

●But the houses were cold, closed, unfriendly.(可是那些房子冷漠无情,门窗紧闭,一点也不友好。)

●Vingo sat stunned, looking at the oak tree. I t was covered wi t h yellow handkerchiefs—20 of them,

20 of them, 30 of them, maybe hundreds就是运用了夸张的手法,主观地渲染了气氛。

●She gave me the impression ofshavingsmore teeth, white and large and even, than were necessary for any practical purpose.(她给我的印象是:她有一口洁白整齐的大牙,为数之多已超过任何实际需要。)

(Irony)

●Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it (the cheque ) up. Her present, her lovely present. Wi t h trembling fingers she tore itsintoslittle bits.

●She was not so young as I expected and in appearance imposing rather than attractive.(她并不如我想象的那么年轻。

(Parody)

●To lie or not to lie-the doctor's dilemma(撒谎还是不撒谎——医生的难题)看到这个标题,我们不禁想起莎翁戏剧Hamlet中那个永远也解不透的句子“To be or not to be, that is the question”。

●Lady hermits who are down but not out(穷困而不潦倒的女隐士们)文中的down but not out源于down and out,原是拳击比赛的术语,后来喻指穷困潦倒的人。

(Oxymoron)

●A miserable, merry Christmas(悲喜交加的圣诞节)。

(Alliteration)

●A miserable, merry Christmas

●Profits of praise

常用比喻词like, as, as if, as though等,例如:

1、This elephant is like a snake as anybody can see.

2、He looked as if he had just stepped out of my book of fairytales and had passed me like a spirit.

3、It has long leaves that sway in the wind like slim fingers reaching to touch something.

1、German guns and German planes rained down bombs, shells and bullets...

2、The diamond department was the heart and center of the store.

1、The Great Wall was made not only of stones and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

句中的“the flesh and blood”喻为“the great sacrifice”(巨大的牺牲)

2、“...saying that it was the most beautiful tongue in the w orld,...”

4、Many eyes turned to a tall,20—year black girl on the U.S. team.

这里的“many eyes”代替了“many persons”。

1、She may have tens of thousand of babies in one summer.(From“ Watching Ants”)

2、My only worry was that January would find me hunting for a job again.

1、My blood froze.

2、When I told our father about this, his heart burst.

3、My heart almost stopped beating when I heard my daughter’svoice on the phone.

1、It must be created by the blood and the work of all of us who believe in the future, who believe in man and his glorious man—made destiny.

2、... Because good technique in medicine and surgery means more quickly—cured patients, less pain, less discomfort, less death, less disease and less deformity.

1、Several years later, word came that Napoleonyh himself was coming to inspect them...

2、Al spoke wi t h his eyes,“yes”.

Napoleon was astonished.”Ei t her you are mad, or I am,”he declared. “Both, sir!”cried the Swede proudly.

1、On the root of the school house some pigeons were softly cooing.

2、She brought me into touch with everything that could be reached or felt——sunlight, the rustling of silk, the noises of insects, the creaking of a door, the voice of a loved one.

Well, of course, I knew that gentlemen like you carry only large notes.

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.

How and why he had come to Princeton, New Jersey is a story of struggle, success, and sadness.

Many people will soon find themselves rich in goods, but ragged in spirit.

1.The snow was like a white blanket drawn over the field. 2.He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow. 1.His friend has become a thorn in his side.(他的朋友已变成眼中钉肉中刺。) 2.You are your mother’s glass.(你是你母亲的翻版。) 3.Hope is a good br eakfast, but it’s a bad supper. He has a heart of stone. He has a heart like stone. There again came out the second flash, with the spring of a serpe nt and the shout of a fiend, looked green as an emerald, and the reverber ation was stunning.(爆发了第二次闪电,她像蛇一样蜿蜒,如魔鬼般嘶叫,像翠玉般碧绿,轰隆隆震耳欲聋。) 这个例子中对闪电的比喻就用了三个喻体,spring of a serpen t(动态),shout of a fiend(声音),green as an emerald(颜色),它们从不同角度绘声绘色地把闪电呈现在读者面前。 (2)延喻据Longman Modern English Dictionary解释,延喻即make a n initial c omparison and then develop it, expanding the author’s id ea(作出初次比较再扩展,以延伸作者的意图)。 A photographer is a cod, which produces a million eggs in order that one may reach maturity.

But whenever my patient begins to count the carriages in her funeral porcession I subtract 50 per cent from the curative power of medicines.”(“好吧,”医生说,“我会尽力做到科学能做到的,但每当我的病人开始数自己葬礼上的马车时,药物的疗效就会减掉一半。”)
