Here are two examples from the “Letters to the editor” section of the American Girl magazine.
Dear American Girl,
All of my friends gossip(说闲话)! I’ve heard them talk about everything other people do. It hurts because I know they gossip about me. I need help!
Ann Good for you to try to stop the gossip- you deserve respect, and so do the other girls. When your friends start gossiping, don’t join in. Say something like “Oh” or “Yeah, anyway” in a bored tone(语气), and then change the subject. You are probably not the only one unhappy about it, so if you resist, others probably will, too. And if the gossip gets out of hand or become very hurtful, talk to a parent or a teacher about it.
Dear American Girl,
The kid who sits next to me in maths class is always looking at my answers. I don’t want to tell on him because he is really nice. What should I do ?
Lynn Be careful. Are you sure this boy is cheating? Try covering your paper or moving so that he can’t see your answers. If that doesn’t work, talk to him before you tell the teacher. Say,” I saw you looking at my paper. Please stop doing that.” If he continues looking at your work, say,” I asked you not to look at my answers. If you don’t stop, I’ll have to tell the teacher.” That should get the message across. And if he keeps cheating? You can tell the teacher.
36. What does American Girl advise Ann to do?
A. To respect both herself and her friends
B. To refuse to talk with her friends
C. To find people who share her opinion
D. To talk to a parent or a teacher if things get worse
37. Why does American Girl advise Lynn to talk to the boy?
A. To make sure that he is cheating
B. To change his attitude towards exams
C. To give him a chance to stop cheating
D. To find out why he is cheating
38. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. That should make him understand your meaning.
B. That should make you understand his meaning.
C. That should help him pass the math exam.
D. That should help you get more message.
39. We can infer that American Girl is probably aimed at _________.
A. parents
B. teachers
C. young girls
D. adult females

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger(伪造者), was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858
to open a bookstore. At first he prospered by selling his small but genuine collection of early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale and circulation.
Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can’t approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.
In Spring’s time, right a fter the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General ―Stonewall‖ Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.
40. Robert Spring was so good at his profession as a forger that _______.
A. even experts felt difficult to distinguish his products from the originals.
B. his bookstore in Philadelphia was an immediate success at that time.
C. even famous Americans liked his products
D. he prospered by selling his forgeries
41. Why didn’t Spring sell his forgeries in America?
A. Because there was no demand for those things
B. Because America was not his motherland.
C. Because he would have to take greater risk of being discovered.
D. Because he could make more money by selling them in foreign countries.
42. According to the passage, Miss Fanny Jack was _______.
A. a poor girl who had to sell her father’s paper to others.
B. a famous general’s only daughter who survived the war
C. a respectable maiden from the South
D. an imagined person created by Spring
43. In order to sell his forgeries, Spring used all the methods except _______.
A. treating paper and ink with chemicals
B. photocopying the handwriting
C. using aged paper taken from old books
D. approaching people who were not experts.
C
You might not know it, but there is something wonderful at your fingertips. You can make people happier, healthier and more hard-working just by touching their arms or holding their hands.
Doctors say that body touch is a kind of medicine that can work wonders. When people are touched, the quantity of hemoglobin, a type of matter that produces the red color in blood, increases greatly. This results in more oxygen reaching every part of the body and the whole body benefits. In experiments, bottle–fed baby monkeys were separated from their mothers for the first ten days of life. They became sad and inactive. Studies showed the monkeys were more probable to become ill than other babies that were allowed to stay with their mothers.
Human babies react in much the same way. Some years ago,a scientist noticed that some well-fed babies in a clean nursery became weak. Yet babies in another nursery were growing healthily, even though they ate less well and were not kept as clean. The reason, he concluded, was that they often had touches from nurses. Experiments show that most people like being touched. And nearly all doctors believe touch helps to reduce patients’ fear of treatment. Of course there is time when a touch is not welcome. But even if we don’t like being touched, a smile can make us feel better. Smiling increases blood flow and starts the production of ―happy brain‖ chemicals.
So let’s have a big smile and don’t forget to keep ―in touch‖.
44.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Everyone knows that body contact can make people happier.
B.People may work harder because of body contact.
C.Your fingertips can do something wonderful.
D.People may not understand the importance of touching.
45.From the passage we may infer that _______.
A.human brains need oxygen and blood supply now and then
B.human beings react to touches much the same way as animals do.
C.new-born baby monkeys should stay away from their mothers
D.some people do like being touched, but not all people like it.
46.The underlined word ―benefits‖ in the second paragraph probably means―‖. A.becomes useful or helpful
B.gets something useful or helpful
C.falls ill
D.gets hurt
47.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Comfortable Touch B.Smile C.Wonders of Touch D.Keep in Touch
D
True or false, feeling blue after a holiday is usually sign that the holiday was disappointing, unpleasant, or didn’t meet expectations?
Many people will answer ―true‖ when asked this question. Holidays can be a time of joy, fun, and excitement. They can also be tiring, disappointing and full of tension. People sometimes feel blue during or immediately after a holiday. It is easy to assume that these feelings are a sign that the holiday did not go well and that changes need to be made. That’s only one explanation, however. In fact, that ―blue‖ feeling may be nothing more than your body’s need to relax and get refreshed after a very busy schedule.
During holidays, there are many events, activities and people that act as stressors, that is, things that cause stress. For example, stress can be caused by a single major event, such as the disappointment that occurs when an unexpected ice storm keeps family members away from a planned gathering. It can also result from a pile of little things, even things we enjoy about holidays—visits to friends and families, eating favorite or special food, the added tension of having house guests, a change in routine, etc. The body needs a chance to recover from stress. Without these rest periods, individuals tend to suffer emotional tension and physical illness.
So before jumping to the conclusion that the post-holiday blues are a sign that something did not go well, remember that this reaction may be nothing more than your body’s relaxing and returning to a pre-stress stage. If the holidays weren’t what you expected, talk it over with your family and make some changes. On the other hand, if you enjoyed your holidays but still have that ―blue‖ feeling, try to relax and just accept your body’s and mind’s need to get refr eshed after and exciting and
fun-filled time.
48. What’s the popular view on the post-holiday blues?
A. It’s natural to suffer the blues after a holiday.
B. It’s easy to fight against the post- holaday blues.
C. The blues show the holiday is unsatisfying.
D. The blues show your body needs refreshing.
49. Which of the following things is not mentioned as a stressor?
A. A change in the weather
B. A visit to friends
C. A gathering of family members
D. A minor physical problem
50. According to the author, the post-holiday blues may be a sign that _______.
A. you’re suffering emotional tension
B. you’re about to have physical illness
C. you’re unsatisfied with your present situation
D. a minor physical problem

In spite of the flood disaster, a good harvest is still in sight.Yesterday we went to a nearby village to help the peasants get in the crops. We left our school early in the morning. It took us half an hour to reach the village. As soon as we got there, we joined the peasants in their harvesting work. They taught us how to cut rice, and how to tie it. It was in the fields that we had our lunch. After lunch, we had a short rest. We were fascinated by the beautiful scenery of the countryside. It got dark when we returned home. We were very tired, but we felt very happy.
