About ten days ago, I started to write an article on a parenting subject. I wish I could publish （出版）it. But in the days between the writing and the publishing, an unfortunate thing happened. My article discussing the lost art of walking to school was finished three days before an 8-year-old boy named Leiby Kletzky in Brooklyn tried to walk home for the first time from his summer camp.
Today I will not describe the details around the Leiby Kletzky killing, except to point out the obvious fact that it terrified every parent who heard about it. What happened this week is one of the biggest reasons why so few kids walk to school now.
In theory, walking to school is a wonderful habit, which can teach children independence, introduce them to their neighborhoods and encourage physical activity. It’s better for the environment, eases traffic and is just generally the most fun choice.
However, many of us parents don’t allow the habit, mentioning the problems of logistics（后勤）and distance. What we talk about less often is our fear. Maybe that’s the heart of the matter. Indeed, it is an understandable reaction. But it is not a necessary one. What happened this week is extremely rare.
Separating out the fact from the feelings is a difficult thing to do. Very few of us were ready to breathe easy about sending our young children off by themselves no matter what happened. We are far more worried now.
The good news is that we don’t have to be. Those children who go to school by themselves can be escorted（护送）when the neighborhood forms a “walking school bus”. That’s when designated（指定的）parents walk with groups of children from home to school. With the benefit of safety, it allows kids to enjoy one of the joys of childhood. It’s an easy, affordable choice.
A walking school bus is a good idea that parents thought of. Proper measures are usually out there. Sometimes all they take is a little cooperation and some courage.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer”and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter.
“You’ve got to want to write, ”I say to them, “not want to be a writer. ”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying thing. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose wishes are never rewarded. When I left a 20-year job in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I hardly made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering：What if? The hole in the Earth’s ozone layer（臭氧层）has until now protected Antarctica from the worst effects of global warming. But scientists have warned that as the hole closes up in the next few decades, temperatures on the continent could rise by around 3℃, with melting（融化）ice leading to a global sea level increase of up to 1.4 meters.
In the past decades the western Antarctica has seen rapid ice loss as the world has warmed, but the other parts of the continent have been cooling, resulting in a 10% increase in ice in the seas around the area. This is because the hole in the ozone layer has increased cold winds in Antarctica, making much of the continent surface colder than usual.
But now that the gasses that cause the ozone hole have not been allowed, scientists expect the hole to repair itself within the next 50 to 60 years. By then the cooling effect will have disappeared slowly and the Antarctic will face the full influence of global warming. This means an increase in air temperatures of around 3℃and a reduction in sea ice by around a third.
The biggest threat（威胁）to the continent comes from warming seas. Robert Johnson, a scientist who checks Antarctica ice sheets, said, “The ice sheets in Antarctica are hundreds of metres thick. But once warm ocean waters start flowing underneath, the ice will begin thinning and could break up very quickly. ”Thinning ice sheets cause ice to break away from the continent
and to melt even faster. Escaping ice from western Antarctica has already resulted in a 10% rise in global sea level in recent decades.
Johnson believes that international action to reduce global warming is required immediately or it may be too late. “Everything is connected—Antarctica may be a long way away but it is an important part of the Earth’s system, ”said Johnson. “It contains 90% of the world’s ice, 70% of the world’s fresh water and that is enough, if it melts completely, to raise sea levels by 63 meters. ”
Even in a worse-case situation scientists don’t expect the ice to entirely disappear, but predict that, because of the melting ice sheets, the sea level rise will be around 1.4 meters higher by the end of the century.
